CTX Worth the $ or stay with the 705?

Terrible Tom

New member
I do mostly do coin and jewelry hunting and occasional relic hunting. Is the CTX worth the additional dollars for my type of hunting?

That depends where you are hunting Tom. If you hunt near me, stick with the 705.....

Larry,

I live in SW MO, about 75 miles SW of MORELIC55 and we have moderately mineralized soil. Thanks for your reply.

the ctx if worth it... me and my friend hunted out this little old park with our other detectors, so we thought... when i purchased the ctx i decided to try it out at that park... i found 2 seated dimes and a large cent on the first path... the ctx can find the coins right next to trash that our others couldnt... thats my thoughts anyways...

I was just giving you a hard time about the competition  The CTX is worth every cent IMHO.

Ditto what billabong writes. My 705 was my first detector and I felt that it did a very respectable job in the mostly parks that I hunt. I switched to the CTX and literally tripled my silver finds.
I think that the increased depth is a factor but the ability to find good targets surrounded by trash is the real plus. The ability to modify and design different hunt patterns plus changing audio tones to suit you own preferences is excellent as well.
Good luck
Chuck

my dad bought a ctx (had an e trac) so he could keep up with my silver count. My e trac went toe to toe with the ctx. Matter fact i found twice as much as he did with his $2,500 machine. I'd like to have a ctx cause its basically an e trac that can get wet but i'd never part with the e trac. imo going from a 705 i'd buy an e trac rather than spend double on basically the same machine. of course unless you plan on using it to water detect......just my opinion

If you think a CTX is a waterproof E-Trac, you have a lot to learn yet about the CTX.

Very true it's WAY different. Just read you will soon see a trend. If your efficient with the e-trac by all means stick with it. I for one had the E Trac then ctx. I much prefer ctx hands down over it. Once you have its language down and set up for your area It's hard to beat.

There is much more to he CTX than just being a waterproof E Trac. It has the finest tone adjustments out there. From setting the tone frequency to adjusting the tone break. And if you think the E Trac does as well as the CTX in trash then I guess you were not hunting in thick trash.

it's interesting how whenever a chance comes up to bash a machine these lurkers crawl out of the woodwork

ok what i meant to say was e trac is a BETTER machine so obviously they couldn't be the same. :smoke:

I have both the E-Trac and the CTX-3030. I used the E-Track for 3 years before getting the 3030. My main reason for getting the 3030 was ergonomics. I have a bad elbow and shoulder and just couldn't hunt as long as I wanted with the E-Trac. The 3030, though a bit heavier, has much better balance and I can swing it all day without pain. Having said that, I have to say that I haven't found a huge difference between my finds between the two. In fact, every year I get out hunted by my buddy who uses an E-Trac. There are some additional features to the 3030 that I like very much. Foremost among them is the Combined mode. Using combined mode I can set a low tone for iron tones, and set the tones for 4 other ranges of id numbers. (More buckets would be nice.) This allows me to hunt with no discrimination. I can just ignore the low tones and focus on the higher tones. I feel that I hear more signals due to no recovery time for the discriminate curcuits. I've found a lot of good stuff with the 3030.

Not everything has been rosy with the 3030 though. If you plan to take the 3030 on a plane with you, be aware that it doesn't break down nearly as compactly as the E-Trac. I traveled to England with the 3030 last year and had to borrow a much larger bag from my neighbor in order to fit the 3030 into my luggage. Some travel differently, so it may not be a problem for you. Also, it seems to me that the tone volume isn't as loud compared to that in the E-Trac. Perhaps I don't have something set right, but I haven't found a setting with which I can bump it up comparable to the volume on the E-Trac.

I have also had to have the coil replaced on the 3030 twice since I got it due to a "Coil not Detected" error message. The first time I had to send the whole detector in to Minelab and the second time (6 months later) I was able to send just the coil for replacement. This is where having kept the E-Trac paid off as I didn't have to stop detecting while waiting for the replacement coil.

I can't say that I've found more or deeper targets with the 3030 than the E-Trac. That's a tough comparison to make unless you are hunting a coin garden, or hunt the same patch of ground with both detectors and mark targets before digging. Both times I had to have the coil replaced, I happily resumed hunting with the 3030 when I got it back in running order. It is my goto machine. However, If I had to go back to using the E-Trac, I don't think that it would have a substantial effect on my finds.

All in all, I prefer the 3030 to the E-Trac, but I am unfortunately not among those who have had their finds increase dramatically over the E-Trac.
All of the above are just my opinion and no doubt others will have different opinions. I know that whether you buy the CTX-3030, or the E-Trac, you will have superior metal detector and I'm certain your finds will increase.

Good Luck!

saltersnatch How long has your father been using the CTX . How long have you been using the e-trac .Give your father some time behind the CTX when he learns how to use it you might be surprised . This is my third year with the CTX , I'm still learning . 45 years swinging a metal detector but still learning what the new CTX can do , in trash it has no match period . I hope you see my video working in trash when I get it done , it well be a while still 2 plus feet of snow here got to be able to see the ground . There's thing the CTX can do that no other detector can do . But then it's just a waterproof e-trac as you say , but coming from a guy that has limited time behind the CTX I guess I will have to agree why did I waste my money on this :sadwalk: :rage: catch my video this spring many eye poppers on there then tell me it's a waterproof e-tac.. sube

I'm looking forward to seeing your video Sube but saltersnatch is not here to eat the porridge, he is here to stir the pot.........

Yeah, see the problem is that you're stating your opinion as if it were a fact. And coming across a little snarky doesn't help.

gurantee i go pinky toe to pinky toe with you and your big boy ctx. obtw i was not trying to start a fight all u insecure ctx boys i was trying to help a guy make an important decision. so lets not forget what this post is about. if you read my intial post boys, u would see i said just my opinion not fact............geesh....check your ego at the door

We understand it is just your opinion but your opinion is wrong and misleading when giving advice to others. It is obvious that you actually know very little about the CTX but you know the ET very well. Most of us has moved up from the ET or SE and we already know the strengths of the CTX over the other models. Most of us has been in the hobby many many years and know that it is not so much what detector one is using but how well you know the one that you are using. You out hunt your Dad because you know your ET better than he knows his CTX, not because the ET is the better machine. Who needs to grow up? I bet many of us here were metal detecting when you were still in diapers.

3030 that you might able to tell below ground is pull tab or nickel. Also waterproof, GPS, google earth in computer to see where you swing!
