CTX Rod...cut/don't cut???

unearth said:
This isn't about fitting into a carry on bag, but a regular suitcase. The suitcase's I have don't allow the lower rod to fit corner to corner or even corner to corner with one corner up and another one down. A replacement rod is $175, a decent suitcase that will hold the rod is more.

I appreciate all the replies I've gotten from my post, thank you all. I have another question. If the clamp is what is holding the lower rod from sliding out, then, the knob, at the end of the lower rod, is only keeping the rod from slipping all the way out unexpectedly, what was the solution to keep that from happening before Minelab put a knob on the end of the lower shaft? Is this a safety issue?

You are shopping the wrong place for a suitcase if it cost more than $100 for one. The knob stops the rod from turning once it is extended too. So the whole rod and the coil may want to twist on you if you cut it off. Two short it may come out as you are swinging the detector and pull the cord destroying the coil wire or worse breaking the connector where the cable connects to the box. It is not worth it. There have been lots of folks on here tell you don't do it but you seem pretty set on doing it. It is your detector so cut it if you want but I don't see any way that there is a good outcome from cuting it. Step back off the edge and think about it. Good luck with what ever you decide to do.

One more thought I have carried fishing rods like this before. Get a piece of PVC pipe that you can put the rod in cut it to lenght put two end caps on it and use it to carry it in. Couple of hose clamps you can add a strap and even make a handel if you want to. It may be to long for carry on like that though. Just a thought.

Thanks Jason for the info. I know the overall opinion is to not cut the rod. For the record, I don't want to cut the rod. It was just an idea. Like so many other ideas, of what works, doesn't work, that come across this forum.

You can ship your lower rod to your destination and ship it back when you leave. Fed Ex and UPS goes just about anywhere.

I definitely wouldn't cut the knob off, If your gonna cut it do it like I described in my other post... wildherre

Another idea I have had is what about a golf bag travel case. There is one at academy sports that is silver fiberglass that might work. I haven't put a tape measure to it to be sure but you could pack clothes or foam around the CTX for protection. The one I was looking at is kind or the same color as the CTX if you're into matching thu gs up like that. I don't know if you want to check the bag or use as a carry on. The one I seen was about 100.00 bucks
