CTX Rod...cut/don't cut???

unearth

Trying to pack my ctx for a trip and the coil rod is to long for the bag, even on the diagonal. Now, I know I can buy a bigger bag but they can be pretty expensive. So, what would happen if I cut 2 or 3 inches off the back end of the rod? I would lose the guide at the end of the rod, but is it really needed? All the other detectors I have had just had a straight shaft, no guide. I know the shaft will spin 360

Either get a bigger bag, or a separate bag or arrange your clothes so it goes not just diagonally across the bag but also diagonally from top to bottom. That may make it fit.

If your car wouldn't fit on a full ferry by a few inches would you cut the bumper off so it would fit or wait for the next ferry?

You didn't say if you took the coil off or not or if you removed the battery and headphone adaptor. Another way is to unscrew the coil from the control head and remove the lower rod from the upper. I would think the CTX disassembled would fit in a pretty small case. I would try anything before cutting my rod.....I would think the guide should be left on.

Id remove the lower plastic clevis part from the carbon fiber shaft by heating to break the glue loose, cut of what needs to be cut and re glue the clevis back on.. Try boiling water for heat, if that dont do it, heat gun/ hair dryer.... wildherre

It's not the control box, headphone adaptor or the battery that's an issue. It's just the coil rod, without the coil. The rod is 32" long. My main question, what are the possible problems, if any, if 2 or 3 inches are cut off the coil (lower) shaft at the top where it slides into the upper shaft?
Size and weight restrictions with the airlines, regarding luggage, has prompted me to post this question.

No way would I cut that rod. Mine fully extended is just long enough and I am not a tall guy. Also I checked on a extra about $160 so if you got $160 to blow break out the saw.

Best idea yet, at least when you pull the rod out and you over extend it, it won't fall out of the upper shaft and overextend or damage the coil wire this way. I just chopped an ACE 250 so I could easily use it UNDER a house, and guess what?? I ordered a SPARE upper and lower set of shafts and cut them, I wasn't about to cut the original till I had a way to undo what I was about to do...

Go to Goodwill or Salvation Army outlet store and pick up a larger piece of luggage for a few bucks. I can't believe you would consider cutting the coil rod. Put it in a pillow case and carry it. Never mind it is your machine. Good luck. :surrender:

One last idea. Cut a hole in your pants pocket and tie a string to the end of the rod. Now put the rod in your pocket and through the hole down your pants leg. When it is totally out of site, tie the other end of the string to your pants loop so it won't fall out. It's way better to ruin a pair of slacks than your lower rod!

P.S. This won't look right if you wear shorts.

OK OK, one more idea. Tie a rope around the end of the rod. Wrap the loose end of the rope around your neck and then tie that to the same end of the rod. Now, when you get to the airport have your wife hold the other end of the rod while the rope remains tied around your neck. Have her tell the airline (and TSA) that you were bitten by a rabid dog and your are flying to (where ever) for treatment.

Be sure to tell them that you are safe as long as your wife has control of you with the rod and rope. You might want to go ahead ask for a free upgrade to first class if they fall for this ruse.

if you could find a screw in out system of the right diameter that will fit inside the pole so you can still change coils that would work nice :super: sure there is stuff out there like that. just have to know where to look that part cant help you with but sure its out there.

DON'T CUT IT! I am now in Europe with my CTX. I just brought my lower rod as carry on no problems. To tell you the truth I don't think Minelab built this machine for airplane travel, but if you carry the rod on with you, you shouln't have a problem. Good luck.

I personally wouldn't cut my lower rod, to make it fit a carry-on bag. But it's your machine and do whatever you think is right.(and won't regret later) You can't take the lower rod and put it corner to corner in a suitcase? You could still put the rest of the CTX in a carry-on bag, for the machine's safety. Good Luck with your decision..HH

This isn't about fitting into a carry on bag, but a regular suitcase. The suitcase's I have don't allow the lower rod to fit corner to corner or even corner to corner with one corner up and another one down. A replacement rod is $175, a decent suitcase that will hold the rod is more.

I appreciate all the replies I've gotten from my post, thank you all. I have another question. If the clamp is what is holding the lower rod from sliding out, then, the knob, at the end of the lower rod, is only keeping the rod from slipping all the way out unexpectedly, what was the solution to keep that from happening before Minelab put a knob on the end of the lower shaft? Is this a safety issue?
