CTX and Air Travel

Just got back from Puerto Rico. Took Excal II and Fisher Cz20 in old hard American tourister suitcase and CTX in carry on. Scoop and lower ctx rod went in with clothes in suitcase. Everything traveled great. I've taken Excal II in carry on to Cayman and Cozumel as well as two other trips to Puerto Rico. Just pack carefully and enjoy!

Hi,,

I have traveled to Hawaii and the Caribbean on several occasions and I can fit my Minelab Excal 2 plus my CZ-21,,all rods plus scoops along with my own hardwood design for my handles for my large stainless steel scoop in a Gun case made by Pelican cases. If measured with outside dimensions I come in at 61.5 linear inches which is permissible and weight at 49.5 lbs.

Never had an issue and lugguge sometimes gets handled extremely rough,,well put to rest and go in peace,,the pelican case price is Worth it's weight in gold,,never had any issues except did get my case opened up several times at different intervals by customs,,they actually thought I was carrying rifles.

I sent an E-mail to Minelab and asked if they had any plans for a hard case in the makings. They said that they do not, but are aware of the demand and will forward the request. I guess we are on our own. DiggingVt came up with a really nice one.Great job.

Foam Factory Inc Eggcrate antistatic foam sheet (pink ugh) 1.5 inch thick half sheet 72"x40" 32.98

Plano Bone Collector Series All Weather Bow case (walmart) 107.46

Added the antistatic foam over the foam that came with the case. Total cost. 140.44

Will see if I have pictures to post if not I will take some.

pinpointgrey: Do you have a photo? The dimensions look like they might work but I have a concern about the 2 supports in the middle of the case.

I am hesitant about putting 240 into a case that might get used once or twice a year.

I bought mine on Ebay thru a musical instrument supply shop. I got it without the foam so I could pack clothes also to keep from having to pay $$$$$$$$ for second checked bag when I go to England.

I use a tennis racket shaped AR 15 bag that slings over the shoulder, it will hold my CTX, and AT Gold and or Deus, along with pin pointers and other gear, I have taken it numerous times to England and no questions asked, If you think about it, you see people with Guitar cases all the time carrying them on a plane.. I'm guessing if it was a issue you can have the attendants store it in the cabin for you like a guitar.
If your interested I can get you the name brand , can't think of it right off, thanks! NC Jeff

I have used the Plano case from Walmart for over a dozen flights without incident. Sells for 106. Never had an oversize issue with the airlines.

You can see that it holds the ctx with accessories AND my sand scoop !

This case was evidently dropped or abused as one end was punctured (not all the way through). No damage to the ctx.

I use a large Briggs & Riley carry on garment bag. All the parts will just fit length wise. About 179.00 dollars and works great for me as I can carry clothes and other valuables as well. Lots of pockets etc. Not a lot of weight and you can wash or drying clean.

There are 2 sizes....large is the one you want.

My biggest problem with air travel and the CTX has been the length, especially for the lower rod. A case long enough while still being within the airlines size restrictions is difficult.

The garment bag is just long enough to accommodate all ctx parts and then some....and folds in two with handy carrying handle. Its low profile and slender so it doesn't get much attention from the airlines.

I tried looking it up, but couldnt find it. Sounds like a great carrier!

The best thing to do is buy travel insurance through Allianze , it's pretty cheap..well worth it covers all aspects of a trip

Here a pic of it. It has a long zipper from side to side to accommodate the detector and others things. 4 other zippered pockets on the other side interior.....then you can put hangered clothes inside the long main compartment.

Most luggage is big and heavy. This you can carry on and that's why I like it. Ive taken my bag on many plane trips and no one says anything about the size.

I have used the bow case with sucess. Cost is under a hundred bucks from walmart http://www.walmart.com/ip/Plano-Bow-Guard-All-Wether-Bow-Case-in-Black/19218891

Here is an old thread with the pictures. http://www.findmall.com/read.php?86,1943714,2295205#msg-2295205

I could fit the ctx, accessories AND sand scoop in it.

I never had a problem with airlines wanting to charge extra although one Allegiant customer service made me sign a damage waiver. No damage yet with over a dozen round trips in!

I have been doing a lot of searching for a case and see many out there on this as well as other forums made by Plano, or Pelican. I will be flying to England and staying there for around a month staying with some friends that have some great fields to detect on. I really do not want something that is going to cost too much since this is the only time it will be used more than likely but don't want anything cheap as well. I know the pelicans can be costly but they are tough, and they have TSA locks built in so if they need to take a look they can, as for the Plano ones I am not sure about them I have owned a few Pelicans in the past for some fire arms, but never a Plano. I know a lot of people like the Plano. The size counts so I do not have to pay extra bag or oversize bag fees, Virgin Atlantic has 81 inches for there max making Plano and the Pelican two great options, I just need to pick one. I am sure I will take my sweet time and it will be a last min purchase.

What is the length of the case? 42"

I think it's actually 43 just enough room for the length of the main shaft
