CTX and Air Travel

Can the Box (at the end of the Rod) and or the screen and touch pad be removed from the CTX to allow placing in a carry on bag when travelling by Air?

My real question I am trying to resolve is can I disassemble a CTX 3030 to carry the expensive parts in a carry on bag (abt 21 inches in length)? Not really worried about the rod, mostly just the expensive parts. I could never trust the airlines with a complete CTX 3030 in the belly of the plane. I have had my baggage lost and damaged before and I want no part of expensive gear in the belly of a plane.

I went from Missouri to Florida. I put rod in luggage and everything else in carry on. I had two of them had no issues. I put my manual with both machine just in case.

I have found that the control box/screen part of the rod is about 2 inches longer than what will fit in a standard carry on bag. I too would like to find a solution for carrying on just the control box/screen as I have had to pack it REALLLY well as a checked bag.

I like the idea somebody has posted about buying a certain gun case with foam cutouts. Does anybody know where that type of foam can be purchased, or info on which gun/bow cases work and where to buy from ?

If you do a search here there was a post where the guy posted pictures of the bow case he set up for the CTX and what the manufacturer and part number was. It was perfect for traveling.

Thanks. Yeah I remember that post. I thought he indicated he bought extra foam (aside from what came in the case) to shape the cut outs. I may be wrong on that but since I'm not a hunter I was wondering if that type of grey dense egg carton foam could be bought from somewhere? Any ideas?

Most checked baggage is limited to 62 linear inches. That's pretty small and anything bigger could be hit up as over sized and charged some $80 extra each way! I have to place my lower rod in an over size suitcase to make it fit. What sort of luggage length are you guys using? Are you packing the rod at an angle, crosswise? I fitted 1/2 my large and slightly oversize lightweight hard side suitcase with foam and made rough cut-outs to fit all pieces of CTX in. I used and cut to size thin foam backpacking roll up sleeping mats and place sheets on bottom and on top sides of foam, thus fully encasing CTX in a foam protection. It survived the Gorillas on a recent trip to Antigua!

Sometimes a detector in your carry on can cause trouble with foreign officials! That can create a big mess while traveling and a few guys I know almost missed their flights home because of that! That's why I pack my detectors well in checked luggage and cross my fingers.

I have almost the same setup as you. A large, slightly oversized, hardside suitcase. I put the rod in diagonally and used two large memory foam pillows top and bottom to protect the control box ( all I had lol ). Then I strapped all that down with straps that were in the suitcase. And then used other stuff to fill in the gaps. Hard to explain but it worked pretty good.

Earlier post I asked about a hard gun case type container with foam cutouts. Well, by pure coincidence I found what I was looking for. They are called Pelican Cases. There may be other manufacturers but this is the one that seems to be exactly what I'm looking for. Pelican Cases
They are pricey but should give us travellers convenience and peace of mind. :)

I found an old Whites XLT hard-shell case and re-cut foam to accommodate my V3i. It worked great! Now that I own a CTX I plan to do the same thing as I do not see where the CTX is any larger than the V3i was. Hope I am not wrong, because I am doing an East Coast visit from Calif next month and the CTX is going!! I'll keep everyone posted.

Has any one talked to or had an experience wth an airlines regarding the reimbursement of a lost metal detector?

This morning I talked with United and no one in baggage resolution or reservations could give me a straight answer regarding the loss and reimbursement. By law United will reimburse up to $3400 for a lost bag but they also state on another web page that they are not responsible for the loss or damage of high value, fragile or perishable items and their list could easily include a metal detector since it is electronic. This is the high value link I'm referring to https://www.united.com/web/en-US/content/travel/baggage/fragile.aspx

I don't generally live my life as a pessimist but I do like to be able to make informed decisions and while I'd love to take my CTX with me I'm looking for an inexpensive used travel detector for occasional use; I'd take the CTX if I ever plan a trip for metal detecting.

Here is the case I made, this is from early summer post. It is a 2 gun case, all foam came with it, just trace out the CTX and cut with a long razor. Case also has wheels for easy rolling through the airport. Case went from VT to Alaska and back with no problems. If anyone needs more info on case PM me and I will check the model # and maker.

That looks like the Pelican case I have for my SCAR17, it is a great case. You will be looking at around $200-$250, but, that is still pretty cheap insurance for this machine.

The distributor in my area wants 289.00 + shipping. I called SKB and they told me that is within the suggested retail price. He said you might find it cheaper on E Bay or another site, but it wouldn't be under warranty. It is really a nice case.

I modified an SKB case about 2 years ago - stats below. It can be found on the SKB website or online, just search - SKB iSeries 4217. You should not pay more than $200 for it - as I have seen them go for $169ish on eBay. I have traveled between the US, Hawaii, Singapore, Kenya and I am now in Japan. Never a single issue. I usually fly Delta and have never been charged an extra baggage fee, but I am a Platinum member so they may waive it.

That's some beautiful work there on that foam, Shane.

That's boredom on a rainy Sunday afternoon - oh - and two cans of Krylon Fusion Spray Paint (Blue and Metallic Silver).
