Well, Sunday finally came, that's when Greg (Mountain Man) could go detecting with me to the new spot. This would be Greg's first time there. He has shared many of his sites with me, so only happy to return the favor. We had made arrangements to meet at a little country store at 6:30 in the morning, that way we could hunt while it was cooler... ha! It felt like it was near 80 when I took this picture of the sun coming up while I was waiting for Mountain Man. I have enlarged all the pictures so you can click on them for a larger version.

We went out to the pasture and started digging bullets right away. Everytime I looked at Mountain Man he was digging a new hole, and everytime he looked at me I was doing the same. Yankee calvary must have dropped bullets like they were fairy dust; I tell you, this is true government waste! We found over 50 bullets combined in about 4 hours.

Found my first whole Spencer; ended up finding four whole ones and watched two others break as I dug them. I got into a small patch and dug 16 bullets and 8 Spencer casings in an area not much bigger than a hoola hoop. Still no rain, and the ground is near as hard as concrete. The bottom of my foot is so sore from digging today I'm going to have to recouperate before I go out again.

Got another signal that was reading as a bullet, cut a plug and popped it up like I was dealing with lead. Turned out to be a very fragile "H" company hat insignia. This would have been on their hat below the crossed sabre insignia; unfortunately the crossed sabres weren't there, believe me, I looked. Anyway, a cool find, and I just can't believe I didn't break it. This thing's as fragile as the wings of a dragonfly.

By noon it was baking hot. You could see the heat radiating off the ground. The pasture was full of cows and a big bull, but he was too hot to chase us and we were too hot to run from him. Here's our combined finds. Mountain Man's on the left, I'm on the right. Yes, it was a good day.

Here's mine cleaned up: 33 bullets, Spencer casings, thing on the bottom is an old pin brooch with what looks like mother of pearl inlay. I'm not even including all of the Spencer bottoms and busted casings. We've made plans to meet up for an evening hunt this coming week.
