Creating a NEW program

New member
Hello all,
1. I have had my V3i for a month now....and it continually amazes me. I feel I have a "grasp" on most the settings and what they do. It took me a while to grasp the concept of how the programs are stored.....active vs library....(Whites dropped the ball on documentation) One area that is foggy for me is the Programs menu.
If I wanted to build a new program, using the "load/copy new" option" would I get a blank program needing each and every option to be set??? all 161 or so? I know I will get responses to just load a new copy of an existing program.....i.e. coins & jewelry...and re-name it and make the changes you want, but I am curiously wanting to start a NEW program from scratch.

2. I see all the programs posted by fellow detectorists. These programs are custom made by them for their area and may/may not work good in different soils. Also, in the program spreadsheets, not every setting is listed. (Same thing is true in the owners manual from Whites) Things like "Consistency or intensity and base threshold" , "fade rate" , etc. What am I missing here? Am I making any sense with these questions?

Welcome to the forum bigjer and your post makes a lot sense. The owners manual is one place that White's has really dropped the ball IMHO. Just about everything has been posted and hashed out, but there are bits and pieces everywhere on the Internet, luckily, most of it is right here in this forum and the Search feature will be a big asset in finding specific information. It is a major undertaking to write a book covering all aspects of the V series but the V has been on the market long enough that I would think someone should be coming out with a book soon that will have all of that information in one easy to read and indexed source.

I'm not sure, but I don't think it is possible to build a new program from scratch and if you could, why would you want to? The almost unlimited choices would drive me bonkers getting them all entered.

To be honest, I don't think I ever created or made a custom program. I just find the program that matches my type of detecting best, in my case Relic. Then I make all of my changes and save them to the Relic Program. I don't care if it is called "My custom Program" or "Relic".

Much easier than saving, renaming etc. I always get confused when trying to do that. The DFX was no better.

No you don't have an option to load a blank program. All adjustments are listed, just download and use the manual for the V3. They are 4 pages long. Many adjustments have nothing to do with performance. I studied them all when I started testing the V3i. Even If you started from scratch you would find yourself setting many to the default. Also as you make a change in many cases you will then have eliminated some of the choices.

The only problem with using the V3 manual spreadsheet for factory settings....is some of the parameters are different than the V3i......some setting ranges are expanded in the V3i......e.g. ...recovery delay in V3 manual is 60 for all factory programs.....and a lot higher in v3i manual...

It doesn't matter if the parameters are different. A custom program is just that custom, meaning it fits your needs. Again, most have nothing to do with performance. The ones that affect performance a few in comparison to those that make it look and sound different.

I really think you are making it harder than it has to be. Using the excludes feature I can write a complete custom program in minutes.

Here is a section of the adjustments. The yellow have no affect on performance and some of the pink in around about way can affect performance under certain conditions. Many people have not used these settings and are doing just find. Learn the settings that affect performance FIRST.[attachment 224311 2012-02-23_132830.jpg]

Hi, I started detecting in the early 70ies and what i found out is not what you set the detector to find but what you set the detector to ignore. most detectors will scream when you go over any bit of metal so what you need to do is set your machine to what you want to find. Think about what you want to find and ignore the junk. Figure out wether you want to pick up chump change or old silver. I go to a site I call my silver mine but the problem is that it was also used as a shooting range with a lot of bullets. Also I ignore zinc pennies. I went detecting there with a friend who went almost crazy finding pennies and bullets while I just moved along and picked up silver. I have just gotten a new 3vi to replace my old spectrum and look foward to a good season finding what I want not junk metal. In real old sites I dig everything but in some places I only look for silver gold and rings. Good luck! ginseng john
