Crazy-old-dude-with-metal-detector starter kit

Dudes, this lot hasn't been used in 35 years.
I got no trepidations retrieving items in the 3" depth.
The residents probably appreciate the company.

RESPECT is the issue here. many people put things in the ground by their loved ones headstones (me included). to me it's just disrespectful to hunt in a cemetary. I'm not that desperate for places to hunt.

To each their own and I certainly can see why a cemetary may be a good MD'ng resource but it's just not very respectful IMHO to go walkin' around hallowed ground cuttin' plugs. If I had family members or ancestors buried there I can tell ya I'd probably have a problem with it if I saw someone MD'ng there. Virgin areas are disappearing rapidly and are non-existent in some locations but that doesn't mean we have to relax our morals just to open up other previously untouched ground. Just my two cents worth...and I found those two cents with my Fisher F4! :goodnight:

And often wind up removed from the forums because of the impassioned reactions on both sides of the issue.

When you detect a graveyard you are looking for items dropped by the living, not stealing from the dead. To me, that's not disrespectful and I don't have an idealogical problem with it, but...

You can see from this thread how many people find it offensive to detect there. And that's just the dirt fishers.

The reaction from non-detectorists is even stronger.

That's why I personally would never detecting in a cemetery or around any headstones, it's awful PR for the hobby I love.

You are forgetting that he has permission from the owners of that land. As I said earlier, a public cemetery would be a different story all together.

Bad taste is bad taste, no matter who said it was OK!!

this is very bad karma!.
it is reprehensible behavior..period!

with the owner there in person with you, with all hands in agreement as to what is taking place is one thing, but to venture into a cemetery and metal detect in some situations can be taking the risk of getting your head blown off.I have told my tale of just such a situation on several of these forums over the years and as always it needs to be told again from time to time for those of you that may think it worth the risk for just a little chance at some cemetery treasure.I went into a large cemetery years ago and upon entering I asked some people there at a grave if it would be ok with them if I detected the old church site at the far end f the cemetery. They said it was ok with them. All was left was a small slab of cement where the front door of the Church had been, as it had been torn down and moved years before. The closest graves were probably over 60 yards away. I hunted awhile and was approached by this guy jawing at me about digging in a cemetery. I should have taken heed of the lack of brains he was displaying from the fact that here he was cursing out some metal detecting dude with a 22 mag. strapped on his side in plain view..I quietly let him know he best back off and go back wherever he came from, which he did, and continued on detecting . After 30 min. or so and little luck and all the fun out of it because of the wild man,so I headed for the gate and my truck, where an old man was parked in a truck I walked over to my truck and put my stuff over the tailgate and into the back of my truck. The old guy had waved for me to come by his truck so I did.We shook hands, introduced ourselves and I showed him the few wheats I had found by the Church, and he went wild, accusing me of digging and robbing the dead, and let me know just how close I had come to his "shooting you dead and leaving you lay " (his words) with the 12 gauge laying across his lap and resting on his wifes leg. This was wild man's Uncle and I was seeing where he got the crazy from. I did my best to ease toward my truck and to put some distance between us while he was ranting and raving. I made it to the truck I believe only because he had seen the gun on my hip and suspected that I just may do some shooting myself if he stuck that 12 gauge out that truck window . What would you have done? I knew when the man told me his name at the truck that I was in a bad situation, because I knew the family name and knew of his brother that had killed another of their brothers over a dispute of ownership of a fish pond.I truly believe had I not been armed , and that he saw it, or was told of it by his nephew, he would have shot me dead in the cemetery as he told me he had planned to do when he drove up and parked. God is Good y'all, and and he was good to me on that day for sure. Think on it real hard before you hunt a cemetery.

it's an event physcological!..people just do not want others
digging around their loved ones!..people get upset and angry,
and feel you need to detect somewhere else!..that's why!
it's the way it is!..let me ask you a question!..why would you want to put yourself
in a sensitive, and perhaps harmful position when there are so many other places to hunt?

As previously mentioned several times, a public cemetery is totally different than this particular situation. I am only referring to the fact that the owners of the land that this cemetery is on, gave this gentleman permission to hunt it.

I DO NOT agree with hunting PUBLIC cemeteries. I have stated that several times. What is wrong with this person hunting THIS particular cemetery with the land owners permission? It is not a native American burial site (at least I hope it's not) and again as stated before, how can he rob the dead unless he digs down 6 feet! As he stated: "My permission to search here is dependent on the condition the property is left in. As such, I am not trying to retrieve anything deeper that 3 inches, or any object too large to pop out of the ground with a screwdriver."

And if I were given permission the same as this particular person was, yes I would detect. This is NOT a public cemetery but a private one and if someone ran up to me while detecting I am pretty sure that the land owner would not be happy with someone else trespassing on their property.
