Crafting the perfect water scoop

Bought this scoop last year. Placed magnets on each side, inside the scoop. Boy I'm either getting older or this was just too heavy. So this year I took off the magnets (-1lbs.) and now the stock scoop with my new Neodymium magnets firmly glued in with silicon weighs about 6.5 lbs. It feels lighter!. I'm in the process of rounding the square edges of the handle. The square feels uncomfortable on the hands. I especially like the smaller holes in the design of the scoops drilled areas. However it needs additional smaller holes in more places within the scoop. Expanded from edge where they end for a couple more inches more. Then if this could be made in titanium, we'd be all set.

Maybe you could go with a fiberglass handle to reduce some weight.

we all hunt and hope for such a creature, just like water hunting shoes

neither exist

afer many trials, we get what works the best of us, sometimes that is two or three scoops

one of damp sand, one for water use only, one for both, or just one for all.

a buddy of mine here has that same scoop and god it is a nice scoop, but like u said, heavy and the wooden handle gives him a fit. he added some large shrink wrap to his, now it is smooth most of the way

good luck

They're trying!!!!!!!!!! I have the same scoop only a newer revision. The scoop itself is lighter but still weighs just as much when full of bottom!!!! I've taken some of the load off by floating my scoop on my sifter when not in use. I've also stopped looking for targets in my scoop. I dump them in sifter and let water and waves do the work while I look for the next target.

Titanium? Hold on to your wallet!!!

If they could take the stainless scoop from this one and adapt an off-set aluminum handle like on the Beach Brute that would make a perfect scoop for me.

Someone this week offered my a 40 ft. extension ladder made of Titanium for $180! He said its lighter than aluminum and stronger than aluminum. I would love a titanium scoop. $500 no problem. Think of the expenditure of energy to gold ratio. More targets means more gold in my mind. Also the incentive to dig more deeper targets increases your gold finds.

This is my two Scoops stainless Steel they are not heavy and the Handel is 1/2"
i have another 2 more on alum.short Handel for the short hunts at the beach

While at Daytona Shootout they were showing off the pro handle. It is an attachment you can pick up at Home Depot. It is fully adjustable and you can put it anywhere on the shaft. Search for pro handle if you want more information.

I have the Pro Handle on my Beach Brute II scoop. I highly recommend it, used it at the GSBSO this past weekend and it works great, and very well made with all SS hardware so there is no rusting....

I scrounged up the stainless for these two at a local scrap yard.

One I had professionally welded and the other I put together using an old welder I have.

My advice is to have it done professionally unless you are skilled at welding!

They are both over twenty years old and have been used heavily for about five years.

They are heavy, but get the target into the sifter quite nicely. I recently installed an aluminum handle on the one on the right and it is a lot easier to handle, but is still heavy by any standard at, as I recall 12 LBS!

I am about ready at 67 years, for a lighter scoop and am interested in the one kaptainkosmic uses.

Who makes it?

nice work on the scoops Question do you like the handle better than the straight one which one is heavier I don't have any welding skills.I made my first scoop with aluminum angle irons and wing nuts. (so I could break it down for travel)

These don't breakdown as you can see, but they are nearly indestructable.

I built them to meet the need of moving a large amount of material into my sifter and they have done the job very well.

They have dumped a huge truck load of sand and gravel since they were built and I have never had to baby them.

They are built of heavy guage stainless and are heavy because of that. Only in recent years has that been a problem.

As mentioned earlier, I did put an aluminum handle on the one in an effort to lighten it a bit and it helped without sacrificing handle strength.

Both handles float.

These handles are very strong for hard digging. I start the digger into the soil and then I stand my 240+ lbs on the end of the bucket and wiggle the handle to work the large digger down into the sand and gravel.

I've never weighed the bucket load, but it is heavy!!

Works fine!

I have the same scoop as you, first I tried it with the wooden handle, but did'nt like the the angle of the scoop, felt very awkward.
I got a piece of thick wall aluminum tubing that has 11/2" square stock welded on where the handle attaches to the scoop. Then I bent the tubing so the scoop is at a angle that feels comfortable to me.The scoop is still a bear, but is easier to use now. Take care,Dave

Dave what about the bent handle makes this feel less awkward? Also how was the aluminum bent? Does the bend ever feel weak?
