Converting 550 meter to 180

I believe someone here said they knew how to do that but I looked through my messages and couldn't find who told me they did. This new forum setup takes some getting used to.
 
You also have to change out some parts. Havent seen the package offered for sale in quite some time.

Yes I have the parts and the instructions to do this if you need them , the 550 meter has 2 different version of the meter and you have to look at which value is in the meter than it will tell you which resister to use. The kits I made up has both the resister to use the one you need and the extra one can be tossed. There is 2 different resistors that have to be taken out and and replaced plus the correct pot that too has to come out and replaced. The thing is you should know how to solder it in or someone that can as you you have to use a low watt solder pencil and the correct solder so you dont damage the circuit board. One other thing is you have to leave it apart while setting the coarse calibration inside the meter while it is hooked up, lot of people I notice dont get it set and put it together only to see they cant get it to calibrate. It is all in the instruction I was able to copy off the Sovereign forum.
One thing to mention is the 4 screws in the face of the meter has to come out to get it apart, but the decal covers it so instead of trying to pull it off and put it back on when done as it dont stick on too good. I just cut little hole in the face plate where the screw are and leave it that way or when you know it works as it should you could put a small dab of black silicon on the holes, I left the ones I did open.
Myself I learned my Sovereign with the 180 meter and tried the 550 on some I took on trade and switched all to 180 before I sold them as they were easier to understand on the close tones.
I take it from what I have read that 550 meter you got does work correctly as I though some of the XS2 meter didnt work on the GT.

With a little luck you will have it back on Saturday or Monday, hope you will like the 180 mod as much as many of us that use a 180 meter. With the tones and the meter reading you will find it to really ID like no other detector, at least I sure do find excellent ID with mine.

Thank you Rick so much for your help! It never ceases to amaze me how many people on the finds forum have been so helpful over the years, what a great bunch of people we have here.
 
I always wondered why people like the 180 meter more then the 550. I use both and to me it does not matter witch one I use they are both very accurate.

  1. Decided to check the BBS forum tonite and see you wonder why many of us like the 180 over the 550. The early 550 meter I found the number fluctuated to much to tell the id of many targets where the numbers only change a number or 2 so it was so easy to ID the target it was seeing. The later 550 meter were much better, but still find the 180 meters we the most accurate meter ever made for the Sovereigns.
From experience with the Sovereigns I would go by the tones and when I heard a close one I could use the 180 meter and tell if it was worth digging. Got to the fact being I was a coin hunter using the 180 meter I didnt dig much trash and some nice coins others had missed. There i s a lot of little tips I learned with the Sovereign with the 180 meter and was quite good with it too, but it took a while to learn it and found it was the best detector I had ever used in my 47 years of detecting.
As you will see when you have used the Sovereign with the 180 meter and get to know it well you will see you will spend less time digging trash and less fluctuation of the meter on iffy signals when you are doing the Sovereign wiggle.

Been several year now since I been out detecting as my 74 year old body been abused to much as had to have both knees total replaced and 2 heart attacks and a triple bypass of my heart, but still have my Sovereign GT with the 8 and the 10 inch tonado coils plus the SunRay 180 meter and the S1 probe ready to go, that is if I can find a way to get off the ground once I get down.
