I am considering adding an AT PRO to my detecting arsenal, to date I have been a loyal owner of only (not black) detectors. Don't want to mention another brands name on a Garrett forum, but you get my drift. Have any of you AT PRO owners been previous owners of other brands higher end detectors? and if so sow does the AT stack up against them? I am not dissatisfied with my current detector line up just looking to expand my detecting weapons, since I don't own just one brand of gun, vehicle or motorcycle why own just one brand of detector Thanks in advance. Chris

If you go into buying an AT Pro thinking that it is going to be a better machine than a $1500 machine from another company like the original hype that was going around was mentioning , you will be disapointed ......If you are looking for an inexpensive GREAT little light weight machine, that has GREAT Iron discrimination , and pretty darn good depth, and a good ID system that is easy to use , that is waterproof for the kicker, you will be THRILLED !!!...... Don't expect to get the last couple of inches of depth that the higher end machines get , but you will get very close and maybe even closer than what you get from other machines depending on what you have ...... All of my machines other than the AT Pro are higher end machines , and I find that more and more , I am grabbing my AT Pro for my "Grab and Go " machine ..... I will be using mine for recent drops on dry sand beaches , and hoping for GOLD with the frequency that it has ..... It LOVES Gold !!.....and is not too shabby wth coins either ......not to mention it excels as a relic hunter ...... I don't think you will find a better machine out there that will do everything that the AT Pro will do for the cost of admission ..... Jim

I agree with synthnut.

Not as deep as my E-Trac on silver but kicks it's butt of gold sensitivity. I have one site where I hunt with my E-Trac and all the rest I use the AT Pro.

Chris,
I own and sell the at pro. I own etrac/f75 ltd/explorers and several others. The at stacks really well to all of them. Beating them in some areas. Call me or email me with your questions. Love to help you out!

I have one of the high end machines for the beach with a 12 inch coil. It is a good machine, but I bought an AT Pro to see exactly how it will measure up to my other machine. I was looking for something with a faster swing, which the high end does not have, and lighter weight, which the high end is heavy. I will be taking the AT Pro out tomorrow for the first time and make some comparison judgements.

The AT will have a place in your arsenal! I used Whites detectors for 20 years. Mostly XLTs and the DFX. I switched to the Explorer II when it came out about 8 years ago, got the Explorer SE when it came out, and I have been using the E-Trac for about a year and 11 months. I actually use my AT and have taken it out now 8 or 9 times. It is my official "lake bed and beach hunting machine" because it is so hot on gold jewelry and I have been doing really well with it. I use my E-Trac for relic hunting, my Excal II in the water, a Fisher 1236 for competition hunts because know matter how fast you swing it you will hear that dime, I have a G2 that I call my finishing machine to take back to old sites that I have hunted out with different detectors so that I can find more. The AT fits in my arsenal and I know that it will fit in yours! Let me know when you are ready to get one!

That AT Pro has already been shown by some to beat the top plastic "black" machines in mineralized dirt and ID'd better in depth. There was a lot of research, planning and forethought that went into the AT Pro. It's strength lies in it's audio, but it still has tid for those who prefer it or for beginners. Plus....it is HOT on gold.

Graycote ,
How does the AT Pro stack up when looking for gold jewelry as compared to the G2 ? .......They're both so close in frequency that I thought they woudl be just about identicle when searching for gold .....Please advise ...Thanks, Jim

In my opinion small gold the G2 does better. Bigger gold/ring the AT has the advantage. Both very close though.

I never have tried looking for jewelry with my G2 Jim. I have only used it at some of my hunted our relic spots. I don't think I would want to use the G2 for jewelry hunting. I know with that G2 I would be digging lots more iron where I don't dig any iron with my AT. I have only run the G2 up to 40 on the discrimination but it loves that 2" diameter pieces of iron cooking pots, pieces of horse shoes, and other chunks of iron. All of that comes in as very good targets so I think the AT has better tone ID especially for the lake bed and beach hunting that I have been doing.

Howdy John, I have read many of your posts on the Scorpion Forum and know you are the Scorpion Guru...and now found out you are an AT Pro user also.
I am trying to decide between the Scorpion and the AT Pro for 98% relic hunting and 2% gold nugget hunting. How do they compare in depth with the stock coils?
Anything else you think I should know comparing these two Garretts? Have not been detecting for several years but am ready to get back into it.
Thank you for your input !!!
Dan.

Have almost narrowed it down. It will be the AT Pro, G2, or Gold Bug Pro. I will be hunting mostly old home sites and civil war sites. Any help making the finial decision would be great.

The AT Pro wins hands down on depth over the Scorp with the stock coil. however, I like the stock coil on the Scorp better then the one on the AT Pro for ring hunting. I did order the 9" x 12" concentric coil for the AT pro as I am predicting better results for ring hunting. Now if you are doing 98% relic hunting vs. 2% gold hunting, by all means get the AT pro, and also get either the sniper coil or 6.5" x 9" to compliment it for gold nugget searching.

The AT Pro should meet and beat the G2, or Gold Bug Pro in many conditions all things being somewhat equal. The AT Pro gets better audio discrimination with depth and works great in iron infested areas. The AT Pro is also water proof, which will keep you hunting in the rain, fog and frigid temperatures. And should you ever want to do water hunting either at home or on vacation, you don't need to buy another water machine. The Fishers use knobs, which still some people like to use, but they can cause problems detecting in extreme cold by locking, become loose after time and easily change settings. The AT Pro has solid state configuration push button controls, which will stay locked into position.

Graycote,
Thanks so much for your answer ....I didn't realize that the G2 loved iron to that extent !!.....That says it all right there !!...... I have always said that the AT discriminates iron better than most detectors out there , but I had no idea that the G2 was so fond of iron even at 40 discrimination !!...... I'm not one for wanting to stop and dig gold flakes either , and I would guess that the G2 goes for that really small gold and sounds off like it's finding you the ring of your life huh ? .....LOL !!.....I'll pass on the G2 .....I'm having too much fun with my AT Pro ......Thanks again for the info .....It helped me a lot ....Sincerely, Jim

The AT Pro is in a league entirely on it's own. It's a nice solid state metal detector which uses recent technology push button configuration to change and keep it's settings compared to Fishers knobs. Tuning knobs are very old technology....just look at the designs of radios during the past 20 years. Knobs have gone the way of the dinosaur with the majority of electronics today. They are not used in computers, and most certainly don't belong on precise calibrating equipment like metal detectors which do a whole lot more processing of information in seconds, then just even 10 years ago. Even the mechanical/physical design of tuning knobs has issues when you introduce wear & tear from constant use. All of my electronic pin pointers I have used in the past 15 years don't work any more. Why? The tuning knobs wear out. The pin pointers can't be tuned anymore in cold weather. Tune them, tap them ever so slightly and they are out of tune. One of my old Bounty Hunter detectors couldn't be used in the extreme cold weather, because the tuning knobs would lock in the cold. I had to tune it as soon as I got outside with it, then when the hunt was finished, I had to warm it up before I could even turn it off. Not so with the AT Pro. I have hunted in temperatures down to around minus 25 with absolutely no operating issues with the detector, but only myself getting too cold.
