I was browsing on flea-bay and saw a Tasoro that I have not seen before or even herd of.The listing called it a Tesoro Sidewinder but its not in a µMAX case?one side says Sidewinder,the other side says Bandido.But the faceplate has no GB knob that should be on the Bandido ,looks like a silver sabar 2.Did this strange creature ever exist,or is it some halloween trick
 
This one sure has got me as well, no idea what it is. Almost as if someone combined several older models into one detector.
 
This unit has been making its rounds with new owners over the past couple years.
I forgot the story behind this one.
 
Must admit i have never heard of that model,prehaps its was the original prototype Cazador being tested in disguise :rofl:
 
Whatever it is the housing looks sort of similar to the original Bandido also? Where this one has the mode select knob on a Bandido this would be a 10 turn ground adjust knob. The toggle switch and headphone jack are in the same place as the original Bandido. I wonder if we would see a threshold adjust post if they had taken a pic of the other side?
 
Tesoro built the original Sidewinder in 1994 and the µMax Sidewinder in 1996. Photo shows list of Tesoro's built from 1980 until 2012 and when they were built.

a detector manufacturer to be alert to Internet traffic related to their product line on the most popular use Tesoro Forum.

The 'Sidewinder,' as most of us know it, was the first model released in the smaller housing made with the Toltec II's TID display pod, so there's a possibility there was a prototype/test version out there using the then-in-production Bandido II and Silver Sabre II housing. It has the Threshold control on the back-side like those models did, but it was obviously not a regular production model and was not listed on the production sheet that was available to dealers as a current or former model.

So, if a detector manufacturer is savvy to the interest and activity on the popular Tesoro Forum, now is the time for them to pop on and speak up and clarify to the Tesoro Forum Followers just what this models offering really was.

N.J., Mr. TesosoMD, it's your turn to give folks an answer. If this was simply a pre-production prototype that ended up in a dealer or evaluators hands and is now in a get-rid-of-it state, I am sure some would like to know what it is, and since it wasn't a listed production model, what would be the repair/service charges for it? What was the operating frequency? Just a little 'heads-up' from the originating source would be welcome on a highly visited Tesoro Forum..

'original' Sidewinder in the µMAX housing. On my Tesoro provided production list it was built from 4/'94 to 10'96. The µMAX Sidewinder was produced from 2/'96 to 5/'98. There was no listing of a Bandido/Sidewinder model in the shorter-length under-slung housing. Besides, the 'Bandido' label would suggest it had manual GB like other Bandido models, so that leaves a mystery. I think it is an interesting offering of what might have been a pre-production prototype model. On more than one occasion I have personally been provided such offerings from other manufacturers to evaluate, and sometimes these slip away into the hands of a prototype tester, or sometimes even in the hands of a factory employee who was given it.

Certainly it wouldn't be a production model so there's no "Lifetime Warranty" on it, and that would only be to the original purchaser, anyway. Is it based on the 10 kHz Bandido II or the 12 kHz Silver Sabre II since it's in the housing they share? Were they tinkering with the Golden Sabre Plus circuitry at 15 kHz? It's interesting, and I would like to hear from the factory spokesman as to what it was. It would seem to have been an 'idea' they could have been working on prior to the micro-sized original Sidewinder.

Maybe someone replaced a damaged control housing Sidewinder decal with a Bandido decal. You can order control housing decals from Tesoro. I can put a Eldorodo decal on a Bandido II µMax. That doesn't change anything except for the decal. Well it might mess with some people's minds a little.:rofl:

Yep, I looked at the listing and the Bandido decal looked new. I just used a little commonsense. No need for a Tesoro rep to take time to explain the obvious.

tabman, there's more to this than the decals, and the Bandido decal would have been a proper fit for this housing as that was what they used. The Sidewinder decal, however, is much larger [size=small](left-to-right)[/size] than the µMAX sized housing the production Sidewinder came it.

Also, there is no GB like a Bandido would have likely had, and there is a Mode Selector not common on the Bandido series or the latter Sidewinder versions. The decal on the control face is also labeled 'Sidewinder' so it is an interesting detector to pop up from out-of-nowhere. I think it is a good question for a manufacturer to explain a model that appears to be from their production house that someone is selling on the Internet.

It's not to question if this is an after-market fake from a foreign land, or just a bogus make-up unit because I don't think it is. I just feel it would be just and proper for an upscale detector manufacturer to come on the most popular Tesoro Forum and fill-in-the-blanks for readers, who do include many loyal Tesoro fans .... of which I happen to be one. Who else would have the knowledgeable answer? Pulltaber asked, and I think only they [size=small](the factory and detector maker)[/size] can answer.

Plus I'm curious what operating frequency it uses, and if a buyer of this for-sale Tesoro labeled detector will get factory repair service?

Tesoro built a old box style Sidewinder back in 1994, apparently someone put a decal on it that was made for a older box style Bandido. The Sidewinder µMax is a total different animal.
