confused, my new trades?

[size=medium] Brand new to this site as well as detecting. And after reading all that you guys have to say I'd say we (my wife and I), probably made abig mistake. 1st we wanted to detect, and want to find jewelry, or coins,, gold etc, after two months of study we went with the exploreer se from minelab. 1200.oo. Anyway after 3 days and ruffly 15 hours, without having really studied we found lots of nail, tabs, foil bags and chump change, 1.80. Then we met up with a couple old timers, one now sells tesoro, garret, and fisher and agreed to meet us on the beach, we got valuable lessons for free, GREAT, but the guy with our new friend walked our same path w/a f-2, and you guessed it, he got the diamond ring! Shooot!! needless to say I was ready to launch the se in the gulf. Now last night I let myself be talked into a trade with him, I gave up th SE, and he gave us an f-4, no bag, but a couple decent digggers, and an f-2. Now im reading here and seeing not so good reviews on both of our new machines. Any help or advise would be greatly accepted. Except of course I made such a bad deal dont rub it in too much,
thanks

Anthony&Vicki,

On any machine there is a learning curve. I have the F4 myself and it's taken me a few months to get very comfortable...and I am coming from swinging a Bounty Hunter 3300 for a few months. Your deal was only bad because the Minelab is a more expensive high-end machine. Use the F2 and F4 and have patience. The rings and whatever will come when you least expect..I have almost 20 rings and persistance is the key after knowing your machine.

HH Joe

Well, it looks like buddy saw you coming and took youse for a ride. Hopefully, he traded new machines and not used and you got the extra coils. Personally, I hope that buddy doesn't deal in my area 'cause he sounds like a snake. There's profit and then there's plain ripping people off. I kinda wonder if he didn't pitch that ring in the sand himself when you weren't looking. Anyway, might as well make the best of your situation. Work those detectors to death, bone up on all the info re. hunting that you can get, and recoup your losses in goodies. The F4/F2 are not top of the line detectors, but they'll get reasonable depth and do fine on coins/jewelery. The secret to finding loads of goodies is not the detector, but just getting out there and swinging, swinging, swinging. Also, use as little disc. as possible. ..Willy.

If you are NEW to detecting the Explorer was a little over the top for you guys. When it comes to buy a detector it is important to check what skills the person has who wants to use it.
The F2 has a very short learning curve and can be handled by a newby in no time. Right out of the box a beginner will find more with the F2 than with the Explorer. The F2 is extremly easy to use and it has performance even the more experienced user is happy with. You wrote you're not seeing good reviews about the F2....hmmm... where was that. All reviews i saw about the F2 were great.
The F2 seems to develop some jealousy from some users who just don't like to see how well the F2 does compared to their more expensive detectors.

Anthony, the gang is right on many points here. First off sounds like the guy seen you coming and took advantage of you. Its happen to me before also and you just have to learn from it. On the other hand, you now have two detectors with pretty easy learning curves that both you and your wife can use. Both are capable of finding the goodies at descent depths. But like Willie pointed out, you have to swing and swing alot to improve your skills and odds.

I know alot of people with several years of experience on different machines that just couldn't stand the Explorer. Its not that it isn't a darn good machine. It's that you have to commit to a big learning curve. In the long run, other then maybe giving up a few hundred bucks, I think you will appreciate the trade. May even be the difference bewteen you staying in the hobby or getting frustrated and dropping it.

Live and learn to research a little next time, at least you now have two nice machines. The F4 and F2 are easy to use and very light weight, perfect for coin shooting and jewelry finding. HH, and good luck, Mike

Ok, money wise it was not a good deal, but as for enjoying the hobby not too bad. The F4 and F2 are both good machines. I have not really seen the bad reviews of comments that you mentioned. I believe you will enjoy both of these machines and you will find lots of good stuff with them. You need to visit Andy's site at www.fisherf75.com and read all the info he has put together. It is a great site and you will not only learn a lot but you will cut down on the learning curve that comes with each new detector. Search the forum for tips and tricks and let the folks here help you with your machines.

You will find that often good finds are made by detectors in all price ranges. The secret is getting the coil over the target. Have fun and learn the machines that you have. They are both excellent detectors.

I don't know how that ML works but I'll bet you just didn't know how to beach hunt. When you hunt the beach you set your detector to either beep on everything (all metal) or you only reject iron and dig the rest. My guess it that you had your ML set to pick up coins. This would be why you missed the ring. Lots of gold rings fall into the tab zone and you detector just ignored it. Or you could have just missed it with bad coil swinging techniques. (not keeping the coil next to and level with the sand or not overlapping you sweeps by at least 50%)
About your trade - You received 2 new detectors that would have cost you $625.00 He got a detector that may sell used for $700 to $800 used. So he makes some nice money and you have a couple of easy and powerful detectors. Don't worry about it just get out and dig all targets at the beach. Buy a long handled scoop or maybe that dealer might just give you one. That seems fair to me.

As far as the F2, all I said was I didn't like the way it air tested, but I love using it in the ground. You will too, but.....

1st things first. Go get your Explorer back. That trade was not right and there is no way to justify it that will make it right. Bob has publicly offered to undo the deal and you need to take him up on it.

Then go over to the Explorer classroom and let those guys help you. If you still want F2, its only $199 new. If you don't want the Explorer, you've already been told what it's resale value is. Sell it and try again.

But go get your machine back!

:nono:

When this whole deal started I told Tony he should keep his Explore and learn it.When he wanted to trade I told him he should put the Explore on the Bay and sell it and he would make out better than trading. He new the Explore would bring $800 or so on the Bay....Bob

The deal was not all that so bad. You received 2 new detectors that would cost you $625.00. The Minelab to a dealer only cost him about $800. new, so allowing you $625.00 as a trade is about all most dealers would have given. Perhaps you could have gotten a bit more ??? I doubt that any dealer would pay more for a used detector in trade, than they could purchase a new one for.

You will discover that your finds will go up using the F4 or F2, looking for jewelry on the beach. There easy detectors to master, so you will be using them more. There sensitivity toward low conductive targets like jewelry is very good.

I'm not certain what you mean by bad reports on the F4 - F2. I haven't seen many complaints about either of them.

Enjoy your Fishers, go detecting. :)

Perhaps you should sell off the Fishers also and try a different hobby.

"the guy with our new friend walked our same path w/a f-2, and you guessed it, he got the diamond ring! Shooot!! needless to say I was ready to launch the se in the gulf."

Seems like you do not have the temperment for detecting anyway.

Now last night I let myself be talked into a trade with him, I gave up th SE, and he gave us an f-4, no bag, but a couple decent digggers, and an f-2

Now that we have seen the other side of the story are you sure it wasn't you that talked yourself into the trade? If only it was as easy as the White's commercials make it out to be!

Tom

Bob, I applaud your openiness.

Mike

Yea. I've not seen any bad reports either. The F75 maybe, because the learning curve seems a bit higher, but the F4 and F2 are the top of their class.

You have two machines now. Take out a friend MDing. If your not married, there must be some ladies that would like to check out the
hobby. Heck, its always more fun (in my opinion) with a friend along.:twodetecting:

Dear friend, you were 'ripped off' by a conman....there's no other way but to bluntly tell you so,.....sorry.

That said, it does not denigrate the detectors you now have, but they will not serve you as well as the SE on wet sand.

On inland soil, in the early days be patient and learn about your new units, by digging all signals .. That is he only way to learn your detector's language.

I just hope that you make some rewarding finds inland, to compensate for the lousy scam those guys pulled on you both.

Fate has a funny way of turning things around, and I hope your share of good luck is waiting for you on your next outing.

Have faith, feel good, and detect with enthusiasm.........We're all rooting for you...........MattR.UK

The question you have to ask why would he want your old Explorer SE when his metal detector is finding all these great finds(was the ring really found) .If its such a even deal then the guy wouldn't mind trading back. The Explorer SE isn't for a first time user, but being taken advantage of because of a beginner lack of knowledge isn't a smart way to do business. These kind of deals doesn't help or promote this hobby.

Some how this post got deleted:Tony, If you are not happy with the deal we made bring back the F2, F4 and accessories. I will give you back your Explore SE. With no problem,,,Bob

Hi Anthony&Vicki:
I don't think you were deliberately ripped off by a con man. More than
likely he figured you knew more than you really did. I don't think most
people are out to "screw us over" here at the forum because once word
gets out, their business is done for. I would give him the benefit of the doubth.
He has offered to give you back your MineLab and I think thats probably sincere.
You could always resell it on Ebay, after which you could buy another F2 and F4.
On the other hand if you guys are finding really good stuff, and you don't mind loseing
a few dollars, then by all means keep the detectors.
Happy Detecting!:twodetecting:

Robert Roy
