Concentric coils…

Many of my best finds were made with a vaquero. A friend with a Tejon was as amazed as I was to see the Tejon could not stay with the Vaquero. The vaquero was hitting deep, small targets that the Tejon just could not hear.

They say the tejon was a bit too sensitive and sometimes worked against it as you would have to turn down sensitivity therefore losing depth. In ideal conditions it was very deep. The vaquero was more stable and very deep.
When I decided to start again the first thing i did was look online to buy a vaquero, thats when i sadly realized they were out of business.
When I researched i found the Legend to be the best for money and had added features that I really liked.
I still would have probably bought a vaquero just because it is such a great detector. I see a company in Europe has similar analog detectors that really resemble the vaquero and Tesoro in general. Just wasn’t sold on some things like the battery pack(8 AA) on the back of shaft, as opposed to one 9V in the box and the coil wasn’t very appealing to me either.
They have a new concentric that is closed style which some people like i personally prefer open.
Don’t know much about them,
They could be excellent detectors, to me its not a vaquero. I’ll just stick with the Legend

That’s good to know. As i said the only thing im not crazy about is the big battery pack in the back with the S shaft and the coil would take a bit getting used to

I had a pristine Compadre, a 7” coil model. I regret selling that one too. Sorry, I can’t help you there.

I bought this new Tejon but it came with the 8×11 DD coil. A lot to learn on this machine. I've since bought the Nel Sharp 3.5×6 DD coil. And the 5.75 concentric coil. Love to find the old browny 8 inch concentric coil.
Any tips for running it ???

The 5.75 coil is a really good coil.
Thing with the Tejon is to dial back the sensitivity as much as you can and still satisfy your depth. For whatever reason its such a beast it won’t let you run wide open with the sensitivity. You have to tame it down.
It was designed primarily as a relic hunter to go deep, like civil war hunting in the field deep.
If thats not your thing you would be just as good with the Vaquero or even a Cibola depending if you need manual ground balancing or not.
The vaquero is just a cibola with manual ground balancing.
The Tejon is just a vaquero on steroids.

The last machine that I sold was a Vaquero….It was light, great separation, and deep…..I had various coils for it…..I know on paper how a concentric coil works, so I bought the famous 8 inch brown concentric donut coil for it….For whatever reason, I did so much better with the 6 inch widescan coil than I did with the donut…Concentric coils are great if you’re moving slowly through a lot of trash in a small area …I found more targets moving at a faster pace with the widescan coil….As far as depth goes, if you’re hitting a target that has trash next to it at depth, then the concentic will go deeper because you are not picking up the trash…but if the trash is far enough away from the good target, the DD coil will go just as deep… I covered more ground and found more targets with the 6 inch widescan coil….Different coils for different applications

Welp
Injuries kept me out this year. Just getting back on my feet. Hopefully get back to work soon.
If I don't fall again this winter. I'll get busy with the Tejon. Though I'm looking forward to picking up the Legend by next spring. Hopefully they have the new gold mode updated by then.

I wish i never sold my Tesoro’s
The cibola, vaquero, and tejon were basically in the same family.
The cibola is exacy a vaquero without manual ground balance and the Tejon is just a vaquero on steroids.
If i had to pick my all time favorite detector to use out of all of them it would be the vaquero. So sad they went out of business.
Those analog beep and digs are not for everyone nowadays but I think you will have alot of fun with it and find lots of stuff.
Hardest part might be going from vdi to no vdi. Everything and everyone is all about vdi now. I am just getting used to going the other way lol
I think that was the main reason i never got used to the xterra it was really the first one with numbers jumping all over and it was too distracting to me.

You can mod a Cibola to have a ground balance that is even more intricate than the Vaquero’s ground balance…Some say that it’s better than a Vaquero at depth…..I never modded a Cibola, as I was content with the Vaquero…..I’m another guy who wishes he never sold his Vaquero…In hind site, if I ran a Legend for a couple of weeks before purchasing it, I might have kept the Vaquero…Having numbers on a screen to double check tones is a nice feature, but the 0-60 scale with 10 or so numbers used up for iron somewhat shoots it in the foot !….It’s still a nice machine, and compared to what’s out there it’s priced right, but with all the adjustments available, the audio still doesn’t do it for me….YMMV…

I agree but what sold me was the extra features like waterproof, choice of multiple frequencies or running multiple frequencies at once.
Those were a game changer for me just being happy with a beep and dig machine.
I could care less about vdi but im warming up to it. Everyone says it makes all the difference and is the must have. To me it was more of a distraction especially knowing they are not always reliable. I think that is my main issue with vdi is that i would always second guess it and just dig everything anyway so why bother with it.
If it were somehow like 90% + accurate then it would be a different story.
Even then knowing there was still a 10% chance that was a gold ring and not a piece of foil i would probably still dig it anyway lol

Funny you say that i actually had two cibolas and two vaqueros. Same, i liked them so much I wanted a spare and wanted to make sure i always had one.
My wife was furious lol.
Then i sold them all and they went out of business. I was devastated.
I just didn’t want to go the route of a used with the company out of business.
It is what it is now.
I did notice though that there were some very slight variations of some detectors of the same. For example had a test garden and went over it with both Cibolas and got some very slightly different results. Very slight but definitely there. Thats why when i see these comparison tests and videos and they say this one is better than that one i say BS. Even two of the exact same detectors can give different results then factor in alot more emi, different soil conditions, speed, hight, etc no way you can say for certain

So, back when the Anfibio was all the rave, there was demand for a concentric coil to be made for it. Nokta responded and brought us the 9.5” concentric.

I was one of the first to buy one. Actually, that coil was the selling point when I bought the machine. I will hardly use anything but a concentric because they work so much better in iron infested sites, as well as being great discriminating coils for park hunting.

If Nokta produced a 9.5” or 10” elliptical concentric coil for the Legend, I would be all over it. I think it would turn the legend into a new kind of beast when it comes to park hunting.

Anyone else partial toward concentric coils? I’d like to hear your thoughts… and to be totally honest, I’d really hope to see enough interest in the idea again, for Nokta to justify putting together a nice park coil for this machine. I feel from past experience, a 10” elliptical, concentric would be just that coil.

Anyways, I’ll quit rambling, I’d like to hear your thoughts and experiences on the subject. Thanks for reading.

I love concentric coils. I mainly used machines equipped with concentrics until I bought a Deus. I loved the Tesoro Pantera and LST and used them for man-years with great success. I also owned CZ's for a long time. Then there was the Omega 8000 with it's concentric that absolutely loves (d) coins. There is definitely still a need for them. I believe Nokta also sells a 7" concentric for the Anfibio. (definitely a tempting combination) I still can't believe Nokta didn't offer a small concentric coil for the simplex. An entry level priced machine equipped with a 11" DD coil. It's just what a beginner doesn't need because they are more than likely going to take it down to a local park full of trash and bottle caps after they get it and get totally frustrated.

With Tesoros I believe it was who tuned em.
Different people tuned differently.
There was one who was exceptional.
Just can't remember who.

I tuned my vaquero moving the coil up and down until the sound was equal up and down….then turn gb knob 1/4 turn counterclockwise….This 1/4 turn was the ticket !…It added at least 2 extra inches of depth, and cleared up target tone
