Compadre, is it the detector or the coil or both?

UPDATE...... sorry again the the Magician for all the posts I made but I wanted to not only thank him but thank all of you who posted with advice or opinions.... I fixed the problem!!! on another forum someone posted pics of the olld and new Compadre boards and marked in there what I needed to touch and what it does. heres what happened,, I tried the detector in a totally different spot and got 3 different loud signals the type you's hear a sil;ver dollars very loud and distinct.. what I found was 3 soft ball sized rocks so i took one of the rocks and to another spot and tried an air test and it was the rock.. I took the detector home and removed the front cover and like I was told I marked down where the adjustements where before I moved anything but I turned the snsitivity adjustment both counter clockwise and clockwise with no change the coil was still picking up the rock,,,,,,,2nd I turned the ground balance adjustment about an 1/8th of a turn counter clockwise and the coil stopped picking up the rock!!!!!!! I turned the discrim from all metal to max and nothing so I put some change down on my lawn and checked it on that and it was like a sweet sounding bird singing at first light..

I put everything together and ehaded to an old abandoned camp ground that has a beach and pond and found nothing good but I did found maybe 20 old steel tent spikes that got left in the ground when then took their tents down, some chine a few 9mm shells ( strange because I remember hearing about a fight breaking out and someone getting shot) anyway I think the machine is working great now but where i'm now familiar with whats inside i want to try to fine tune that sensitivity to get the most out of it..

thank you again to everyone!,, T @ Plymouth Rock

Great news! :)

Great that it worked out for you, the Compadre is a VERY good detector. I hear that out of the factory the sensitivity is tuned almost all the way up, you might want to run the sensitivity high.

Someone had set it too negative-I did the very same thing. I may be wrong on this, but I think the sensitivity is tied in with the g/b-reasoning for this is when I readjusted mine and got things back to about where they should be I noticed I wasn't getting a loud enough signal on a small target. Out of curiosity, I moved the sens. trimmer clockwise (supposedly less sensitive) and the signal cleared up. Needless to say, I'm outta that box from now on. I shoulda left it alone or marked the spot instead of being Mr. Know-it All.

I know that when I turned the trimmer on the sensitivty counter clockwise it went a full 3/4 of a turn till it stopped and just before it stopped the sound start sputtering so then I turned it clockwise which was 3/4 of a turn to the position it was when I 1st touched it and then another 3/4 till it stopped but this time going clockwise till it stopped there was no sputtering.. so because turned the trimmer had no effect on the innitial problem I was having I turned it back Counter clockwise to where it was before I touched it which I think was dead center in the middle..

now that I know what the problem was and that was the ground balance or lets say I think I know because it shut up,,, I want to take the front panel off again and go back to that sensitivty trimmer and turn it counter clockwise till it chatters again and then go back just enough till it stops,,,,,,I'm told and hoping this will "fine tune" this compadre to my area and make it as deep as possible because I'm in the woods tot lots with shallow change is not really my thing I want the stuff thats been buried for awhile,,,,,

my next problem is the quarter size blister right in the palm of my hand,, I'm going to weld a car gear shift knob to my wifes garden trowl after I break the plastic one off so it fits my palm better and works better when your turning the trowel..

Counter clockwise increases sensitivity. The Compadre I have can go almost full counter clockwise before it "sputters". I set it where it is just starting to sputter with the coil in the air. As the coil nears the ground it quiets down.

Glad you found the ground balance was off and it was not a bad coil.

You better watch out for that guy ;), glad you got it working right, you'll enjoy it the Compadre is a great little detector as all Tesoro's are.

sounds like you need to put a ground balance on it, its easy to do theirs a compadre mod out their you just havto be careful in your sodering.
