Compadre finds a silver bucketlister

Hey all,,, it's been a few months since I went out digging.

Last week while driving I noticed a guy swinging a Garrett Ace at our local, well hunted park. I didn't stop but it did bring a smile to my face as I passed on by. Then yesterday I saw another guy swinging a Vanquish at the same park. This time I stopped and walked over to chat with him. He had driven over from a neighboring city, and didn't know much about our park. I gave him some info on areas I knew had been backfilled, and some areas that were filled with trash. Specifically, I pointed him to one small area that I felt was basically un-tapped and should have plenty of good targets mixed in with lots and lots of trash. He thanked me and said he would try that area this morning when he returned. I thought about it and decided I would ride over to the park this morning to see if he was doing any good. I also decided to take a detector with me too. On a whim, I passed by the Anfibio, T2, MXT, Omega and grabbed my little old Compadre I paid a whopping $40 for. I got to the park and found he is not there. I decided to go to the area I suggested to him and see if I could sniff out a couple of wheaties. I didn't find any old coins,,,, but I did find this sterling thimble. This is a bucketlister for me and it was just that much sweeter that I found it with a one knob, beep-n-dig detector. I also felt good knowing that I had indeed directed the other detectorists to an area that could have paid off for him.

Silver be silver……. Thimbles are neat as they come in a lot of sizes, designs, and metals. Like everything else someone out there is a collector and someone else has written a book on it!!!

It pays to be helpful. Karma. I live within 1 mile of a very busy park. It is also very trashy. So I try to give newbies some pointers like you did. However with some of the detector that these newbies use, I know it is unlikely they will find much in this trashy park. Not impossible, but not likely. I tell them not to be discouraged if they don't find much. Most of them hunt around the picnic tables (which are loaded with metal trash) and stay out of the volley ball court where I find the jewelry. Funny, I know that most detectorists don't hunt the volleyball court because I salted it in center court with a penny at 5" with an X stamped on it. I hunt the volleyball court weekly and the x penny remains there for several months. Which is ok with me, that is my honey hole in the park except in the winter. Most of my best jewelry finds come from that court.

Thats a good idea!! Put a marker in a specific area and occasionally check it for marauders. After what happened to jkline earlier this summer I now carry a couple of junk rings (frat boy took a 925 from him saying a brother lost it, we had permission to detect the lawn at the frat too). At least if someone claims ownership they a Cracker Jack surprise!!!!

At least if someone claims ownership they a Cracker Jack surprise!!!!

I like that idea also. I have plenty of junk rings that I could give away. People who ask me "Did you find anything?" I just say some junk and a few pennies. It keeps the conversations to a minimum.

It has the number 2 inside.
& no I did not scratch the thimble with the needle nose

You are sure right,,, silver thimbles will take you down a deep rabbit hole. I did a little research on the anchor hallmark and it seems to be a Stern Bros. from early(ish) 1900's. A little bit older than I thought it would be.

Although you see them posted often, a true sterling thimble is not very easy to find. I have several thimbles but have only found one that is marked sterling like yours. Congratulations on the bucket lister.
