Coil Question, but not what your thinking

No this isn't another question about "what should my next coil be?" I know everyone is sick of those, as am I. My question is this: Why does it seem that mono/concentric coils are non-existent for E-Tracs/Explorers? I completely understand the differences between DD and mono/concentric but I would think that there would be more options out there for those that swear by the mono/concentric world. I have been looking for a mono/concentric coil for my ET just for comparisons sake and it seems an impossible task. Does anyone know the reason for this? Most other detectors seem to have a 50/50 split between mono/concentric coils and DD coils, for aftermarket options, but the minelabs are clearly DD-biased. I am not complaining in any way, I am just trying to figure out the reason for this apparent trend. Thanks for the help.

A DD coil will see less ground and easier for the detector to ground balance with. However, a Concentric Coil has a little more depth. It is a trade off. But the DD can cover more ground that is counterpart. Less over lapping swings if you will. I hope this helps.

Mark I recently too was thinking about concentric coils for my Xp detector after I tested my Tejon with concentric coil. Looks like Concentric would be better in places with high iron. I would like to see concentric FBS coil. But somewhere I was reading that Minelab Sovereigns had concentric? or I am wrong, we have to ask Sovereign profess how concentic behaves, because BBS and FBS very similar detectors. Stasys

Detech makes an 8" concentric Excelerator coil for the FBS machines. I think there's an aftermarket monoloop coil for them as well, not sure though.

Hello Marc.

A challenging enquiry, which opens 'Pandora's box' so to speak, on a very important subject.

Challenging in the sense that it will test the reader's understanding / conceptions of basic coil fabrication and functionalities.

For any metal detector, it is 'the lynch-pin' to it being a success or an 'also ran'.

We buy 3rd party manufactured heads, without any manufacture's data of their performance capabilities.


I will sit back and read others thoughts on the subject to gain an appreciation of the general level of understanding, before I add my ten cents worth.
