Coil damage?

Who's had damaged/defective coils? What did it "look"/sound like? Is there a way to test and verify that everything is 100%?

I got my Legend back from service (replaced main board) and went out for a few minutes to test before actually taking a trip.

Even with the sensitivity below 20, she sure was chatty and all over the board in some places.

Could a defective main board fry something in the coil?

I'd really rather not have to send stuff in again. I hope it was just the location this evening?

But if I have to, I will send for repair/replacement.
Should that happen, I'm 1000% scrapping Nokta.

Good warranties and companies are sweet, but not if you actually have to send stuff in.

I'd take an unresponsive company that hated me so long as the product never actually needed the warranty.

I can only speak for whites.. That's where I have the most hands on... I've had a bum coil two times... In both cases.. deeper targets were chattery.. for lack of a better word... every now and then I would get a ghost target and would have to turn off the unit and re-ground balance..... Pin Pointing was an absolute waste of time.... the target would be drifty under the coil.... The only way I know to verify a bum coil is put a known good coil on for a 10 minute run.... That'll tell you quick..... It'll either be night and day.... or no change.... Relating strongly to the frustration....

I guess I'll have to potentially burn a day to find out with my 2 coils? At this point, I wouldn't waste a penny on an additional coil.

The odds of having two bad coils are very remote , it should be an easy determination. If both are chatty and the machine has just returned from the service center than either you are just in an area with extensive EMI or it's user error. Just switching from MF to 4khx should quiet the machine down considerably. i always detect with a chatty machine and one of the things i like about the Legend is the interference or "noise" seems to be at a much reduced volume level , in no way similar to a target response in srength or volume. It rapidly becomes sort of a background for the threshold. Even in intense urban areas I am always able to use my Legend above 25 sensitivity and still detect the difference between EMI and faint deep target signals.

You might try cleaning the coil connectors with Deoxit D5. It quieted my T2.

I don't think I received 2 bad coils, but I'm wondering in the fried maim board could have affected them?

Except for "smart" coils like with the Deus, there isn't much that can go wrong with a coil. It's a length of conductive wire epoxied into a specific configuration. If it passes QA, it should be good (barring significant physical damage) for many many years.

So if you got a bad one it should be bad from the start, and it should be exceptionally rare to get two bad ones in a row.

What your asking is whether the head unit can send out something to the coil rather than just receive? Yes, I know there is a signal going out and coming back but it sound like you are asking the former..

I won't say it's impossible, but it seems unlikely that the board could produce enough current to physically defect the wire even if it dumped the entire battery into it all at once. Much more likely to pop something in the power circuitry of the board first.
