Coil Cover

Donut

Active member
Is there a protective cover available for the 6" concentric coil.

I don't think there is Donut but I could be wrong, I have read that some MDers cover the bottom with black electrical tape.

Cut a plastic coffee can lid to size and use a small piece or two of two way tape to fasten it to bottom of coil.

Thanks; I could probably use four pieces of Velcro to instead of two sided tape, then I could clean under it.

pickup bedliner, in a can. Auto Parts stores sell it, as well as some of the big box stores. My brother sprayed the bottoms of his coils with it and swears by it. Super tough and very lightweight.

On the other hand, I've read some posts where some guys have purchased a coil cover for the 6-inch X-Terra coils. I've not found a dealer that has them, yet. But I'm starting to believe they may be available now. Guess we just need to call Minelab and ask?

I have used black electrical tape on the bottom of my 6" coils and it has held up very well. I don't have to worry about losing a cover or cleaning out the dirt. If I should get a tear in the tape it is easy to replace, it at least it protects the bottom of the coil. Try it, u might like it !

I just talked with Gerry of Gerry's Detectors in Idaho to confirm what he had previously told me, As the subject line says the coils are waterproof only on the
X-Terra model to the control box connector; this information is directly from MineLab according to Gerry..

This information DOES NOT apply to ALL coils from MineLab. Not all of the coils on other detectors from Minelab are necessarily waterproof, it would be good to check with your minelab dealer if you are also using another model of MineLab detector and verify as to the waterproof status of a particular coil.

since I field tested it. When I first tested the 6 X 10 Elliptical at 18.75 kHz, it was water-resistant, not water-proof. The reasoning behind that was due to it's using the same shell as the Eureka Gold detector stock coil. And, it is classified as water-resistant. I won't swear that the shell used for the X-Terra hasn't been updated. But I've not heard that from Minelab. JMHO HH Randy

My Solution (above) involved black plastic electrical tape.

OP: First released batch had no skid plate. Later batches had them. Minelab claims the skid-plates are a listed accessory part but cannot seem to locate one for me.

Digger: It's completely waterproof.

As long as there is not a cover available I think I will go with the black electrical tape.
It seams to be the easiest way and it looks good and is easy to replace of need be.
Thank you all for the help.
Now if somebody could do something with the 1-1/2 to 2 foot of snow I have on the ground here.

Again look at this above as a very good idea for all coils. A person could scrub the ground while detecting having this sprayed on. But once sprayed on, the coil-cover may not fit on afterwards OR how about just spraying it on your coil-cover instead to prevent wear, so it can be scrubbed on gravel and grass?

the elliptical 6 X 10 X-Terra coil is water-resistant. NOT water-proof. This, according to Bill Branin, Lead Tech MineLab USA.

The Elliptical 10x5" DD HF Coil is water resistant ....(sorry Digger, I thought you were talking about the 6" Coil in the OP's original post).... but the 6" DD HF Coil is most assuredly Water Proof and completely submersible.

Do you have to put silicone or better yet Lexel on the cable wire where it enters into the coil housing on the 6" DD HF Coil OR is it naturally made waterproof at the factory where the wire enters??

Lexel(about THE very best you can get):

David, the 6" coil is made waterproof so it can be used in streams, rockpools and ponds etc.

Since the Elliptical 10x5" coil is only water resistant, it's designed to withstand light rain and not the pressures of water immersion. But some people have used it in creeks without a problem (not recommended) and others apply silicone to where the cable enters the coil housing to allow them to do the same more safely.

The 6" is sent out of the factory with waterproofing and seals.
The Elliptical 10x5" coil is not sent out waterproofed and is only water-resistant.

Thank you Marco, I understand!! It is rarely talked about but that 9" HF 18.75 kHz Concentric coil may be good to use on the goldfields in very low mineralization for very small nuggets acting like using a Mono coil.

Also that 10.5" HF 18.75 kHz DD coil is worth a try(experimentation) on the goldfields as well and not just strictly for beach hunting for gold jewelry.

I bought an X-70 about 3 or 4 months ago but I never used it for prospecting yet. Do you know if the Iron Mask feature(that can be adjusted up or down) in the Prospecting Mode on the X-70 is very sweet and great for dealing with iron laden trashy goldfields OR is it a white elephant and does not work very well??

That pickup bed liner stuff in a can is sure a good idea from Randy to put on coil-covers(skid plates) to prevent wear for both a X-70 and GP-GPX series as well. In Australia it may be called under a different name like Truck or Lorry or Ute tray liner or box liner protector.

My dad bought a brand new truck-ute(in a place-town close to where your wife is from, you know where I mean as you previously told me but I will keep it secret) about 2 months ago and the rear box was sprayed with this type of liner material by an aftermarket company. It is very tough stuff and a true armor coating.

Hey! My Minelab coil cover just arrived for the X-Terra 6" DD HF Coil.

Apparently they DO EXIST! I was beginning to wonder if it was just a myth.

/Very happy!

Thanks Digger / nero_design I think I will order the cover. However I do like the bed liner spray to.

nero_design -- the cover should fit the 6" concentric right?
