Coil Cable Question

54shooter said:
The cable on my 6X8 sef coil is all stretched out and I have a heck of a time getting it inside the shafts. I ended up with this loop in the cable trying to adjust everything shorter. Is the loop a bad thing or does it affect the way it works at all. I have found some fairly deep junk with it but I threw one of my silver rings in a 3" deep hole and checked it and it wouldn't hit on it except with the very tip of the coil. I'd say maybe the top 2". When I swung right over the top of it I got nothing. Needless to say this worries me as I could be walking right over a lot of good targets. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks All, Tony

Hello.

That loop floating over the search-head is a definite "N0".

So your cable coiled-section has become extended?

Try and re-form it by tying a piece of string 'several times' through the length of the coil's twisted section, and then tightening up the string.?

Alternatively, load the lead up the shafts whist disconnected from the control-box.

Next...push that loose cabling into the lower shaft,(from the search-head end) and wedge a cork or some chunk of polystyrene after it, to retain it, then see if you can re-assemble the whole thing...matt

You asked a lot of questions here. But Im glad we figure the problem out with the probe. I am happy with running cables through the shaft. But now you got me wanting to look at the probe.

The extra loop at the bottom is standard for my other detectors. If you ever have a cable malfunction it will be at the bottom where it connects or at the connector. I agree with Bart you should keep the coil in the shaft. I would just not shorten the shaft. You may be able to reform the coil with a hair dryer, but I would not do that either.

Having new and aftermarket coils feeding them through shafts has been a experience. I finally figured out to just run a string of some sort through and the cable will feed easily. I also bought a extra shaft and need two more. My dogs leash worked in a snap last time. I have small dogs.

You noticed a depth problem with the sef 8x6 too huh. I picked a used one up and was only getting a few inches. I played around and started checking and found some crap stuck in the rubber shrink wrap around the connector. Im not using the 8x6 yet as Im still running a 8 ince and having a ball with it. The 8x6 seems to be very sensitive. Keep it clean, coil cover too.
