Cleaning coins in a rock tumbler

Waterdog

Well-known member
I was cleaning my coins in a rock tumbler with the use of vinegar, salt and gravel and they kept coming out with a bad color.
Then I looked on the net and found another way with the use of a little lime-a-way, a little salt, a dash of dawn dish soap, some vinegar, and water and of course some gravel. Tumble for a hour and the coins came out Great.
Now I won't get denied at coin star again !

Waterdog, I haven't tumbled coins in years but if I remember right, I used cream of tartar in my gravel. Just a couple spoonfuls and the coins came out bright and shiny. Give it a try and let us know how it worked. (separate the pennies)

Waterdog, I use a dual drum tumbler from harbor freight. One drum has copper and zinc pennies; the other drum has clad and nickels. I use hot, hot water filled up to about 3/4 full, a squirt of dawn dish soap and about 5 to 6 oz. Of small fish gravel. I run it 4 to 5 hrs. I check things, and if still dirty, I dump the old water out keeping the gravel, adding hot water and dish soap again. Run it for a couple of hrs. If they look good, then I rinse and let the coins dry. DONE!

Hope this helps, TC-NM
