Cleaning Black from Silver

Anyone got a suggestion for cleaning what appears to be a silver ring. It is not a nice one but I would like to know exactly what it was prior to discoloring. I have soaked in vinegar for two days and nothing has happened to it.
Any suggestions as I am new to this game.
