I've used it on river sand okay. Haven't used it at the ocean yet. If it wasn't such a drive I'd check out all my detectors at Gold Beach, Oregon. Back in the 1800's they mined gold off this ocean beach hence the name Gold Beach. I think if you keep the sensitivity down the 1350 should handle it okay. Black sand is the bane of all VLF detectors.
