Civil War PIN? Anyhistory would be highly appreciate.

From my research this looks to be a pin for the Army of Potenac. The centre of the Maltese cross has no enamel or design from what i see. The blue color, per Wikipedia was used for 3rd division corps. Design of 12 pointed Maltese cross. The pin lock is just 2 loops which lock the pin, no slider for opening and closing the latch.

My search is exhausted and now depend on the highly knowledgeable folks on this group.
Thank you all !

That is a nice piece. What or why do you think they made that one piece move? I'm just curious if it was met to hold something like a sash or a piece of dress clothing. Congrats & thanks for sharing.
Thanks for your reply. I really have no clue, as to why it's movable, but your suggestion does hold merit! The corps in the civil army were assigned colors , would they have looped a sash or decorative colored ribbon through this to display which regiment they belonged to?

The Potomac Medal was awarded to veterans of the Army of the Potomac through the Union Veterans Society.
The Society of the Army of the Potomac was a military society founded in 1869 which was composed of officers and enlisted men who served with the Army of the Potomac during the American Civil War.
