Hi guys. Im a newbie with the Explorer XS. Im having trouble with a lot of chirps, and beeping when im swinging the machine. Is the sensitivity to high, or, what? Im used to using Tesoro's with the silent search, and i know this machine is nothing like them, but, i cant tell a target from trash. Any help would be appreciated. Is there any program that comes close to being quieter?

Yes ... it sounds to me like you have the sensitivity too high. I've often wondered how a person used to a silent search detector would find a threshold detector to use (especially one like the Explorer which has full tone ID as well).
You should try to turn the sensitivity down and play around with it in manual and semi-auto sensitivity until you get a more stable signal..
While you should try to get used to a hunting with a threshold, initially, it might not be a bad idea to set the threshold at 5 or less which would effectively make it a silent search detector as well (at least until you get more used to things).
Use factory defaults ... that is, don't use "extreme" settings, such as, high gain, etc until you get some experience with the detector.
While it may never have the quick simple beep of a Tesoro you'll start to enjoy it when you start getting some good deep targets and the increase in confidence will help you stick with it until the advantages of silent search and multi-freq tone ID become more obvious to you.
It may take some effort but I think you'll find it worthwhile ... good luck ... Gord.
 
I found the same thing when I switched from an XLT. The things that Gord SW Ont mentioned is good advise I think. I guess we're all different but even after using the Explorer more and more I still don't like all the tones so I did two things...turned threshold to 5 or 6(silent) and switched to constant tone and just watch the smart screen. But,if you CAN stand the multi tone thing, it's quicker to id targets with the various tones working since the screen is slightly slower than the sound. -Dave

I have the same problem and I am still practising. We have really trashy fields here in Europe and the explorer beeps and chirps all the time. But- the good targets come through with a very distinct "Uueeeuu", "Wouuu" or other solid tones.It is definitely another raise and decay of the sound compared to the erratic beeps. The screen doesnt help me much, because the beeps jump arround on the screen, too. I have to use my ears. Only once I recognize a good tone I look on the screen where it is.
I am also missing the short "blip" of the Bandido, but I am very confident I learn to use the explorer, too. The only thing I am still very unsure is how to recognize the deep good targets between all the sounds. I think I have to make a "coin garden".

I notice that mine even beeps on high grass. But thats ok. I like the way its running. It all just takes time. Jim C.
 
Check your gain settings. Mine was doing the same thing and I noticed I had the gain setting too high (:geek:. I set it back to 5 and that made the machine a whole lot more stable.
