Cheap Headphones why pay more, or is there a difference in sound. ???

I have been using the same cheap headphones for as long as i can remember, i even forget what brand they are. They do have a stereo and mono swich and adjustable volume on each cup, may be radio shack but i don't recall. any way my hearing is so so even though i have been a welder fabricator all my life, in a loud work place, i never went out of my way to buy a high dollar pair of headphones. with all the talk about the modles like ,'' Gray Ghost , Black Widow , Jolly Rogers , and so on, I wonder if i am missing something with the sport that i like so much. I have never used these brands but may be i should because i could be missing targets that i am not hearing. what doe's the forum think any body.?????

Sounds like I have the same set you do...all old and taped up...same ears too, half worn out...I've been thinking about this question, and will await the results. I just want a standard set of plug ins, like my old ones, no wireless, just what other people who have tried the different brands you mention think...will it make a big difference? Is it worth it? Good question, AV

I too would like to hear from some experienced "tectors" on this subject. Is there a noticable and productive difference between cheap and expensive headphones or is it all hype to seperate one from his money??

Hi. Only 3 years detecting but I gotta go with the 'my ears are half shot anyway' arguement. Too many big hair band concerts! LOL! I would love to try some high end phones but I really cant see them making a difference in what I find. Just my humble opinion. Thank you. HH. Matt

I think that as long as you use good headphone that you'll be alright. Headphone made for metal detecting are over priced.
I really don't believe that there is a difference between headphones for listening to music and headphones for metal detecting.

I have a set of headphones that i got from Amazon for about $14 ($8 for the headphones and $5 for shipping)...Amazon sold them as used (no factory box).
They have the volume controls on each side...They look like the same headphone that Bounty Hunter and some other brands sell for much more.

Unless a person cares about what other people think of there equipment, i say use the cheap headphones because from what others have said there really is no difference. unless there's a magic gold switch / knob. OK got that straightened out.

AFTER USING MANY BRANDS AND TYPES OF H PHONES
I FIND HIGH PITCHED WORKS BETTER
THEY ARE MUCH HARDER TO FIND
AS MOST ARE BASSY TO THE POINT OF DISTORTION
WHEN YOU FIND A PAIR WITH THE HIGHER TONE YOU WILL KNOW WHAT I MEAN
TEST BEFORE BUYING FEW WILL MEET THIS STANDARD

Audio fidelity requirements for detecting are minimal. The cheapest headphones will have an adequate frequency response. What you get with better quality phones is durability & comfort. I do not understand why detecting phones have separate volume controls when the signal is mono. Inconvenient to have to turn them up/down separately??? I am using some inexpensive earbuds that have an in line volume control. Actually, I my set that has had one bud removed, so I can hear what's going on around me. I was uncomfortable with isolating phones on my head for safety reasons as well as because of my desire not to look like a dork. ;) No offense, it's just my insecurities showing.

Cheers,
kev

I was thinking about going with the head phone that comes with only one cup. If any one has used them please let me know, I think there made by killer bee. I could be wrong? P.S. Let me know. Art.........

I have been using Grey Ghost head phones for many years now.
Pro's
Excellent quality.
They have worked on every metal detector I have ever owned.
They sound is the same regardless of metal detector brand. I have another brand of head phones and they don't always work on different detectors. Example being the Bounty Hunter Platinum, the high tones are so weak even at full volume I barley hear them, but the low tones blow my ear drums out. Put on the Grey Ghost and no problems.
Volume knob stays put.
The cord easily stretches out when you put down the detector and coils back up like new when picking up the detector. As a matter of fact I can set the detector on the ground and stand up, I'm 5'11", and they still fit comfortable.

Con's
Only one, they get hot in the summer. I wish they would come out with a pair ear buds with the same performance.

There like having a Garrett ProPointer and a Lesche worth every penny.
In the end it's still the person that makes a good detector more than the price spent on the equipment. If you have something that works stick with it.

I have both expensive and cheap headphones there is almost no difference it performance and the reason you need volume control on the phones alot of detectors have fixed volume and the loud sound can be very annoying and can smoke your eardrums! Also when you get a squirrel stoned it tends to play with its nuts rather than store them!!!
thank you very much

Headphone quality I would think is not so critical for a one size fits all TONE type detector. My 505 has 3 preset Tones in the discriminate mode and so what more do you need to hear. Though it has an ALL METAL mode with an electronic (not manual) Ground Trac, there are some sounds in the All METAL mode(not preset tones) and in relation to coil movement, that clue me into things and a lot of that being able to discern them came from years of running manual ground balance machines (no tones).

Now when it comes to a White's Gold Master or a Gold Bug machine for example, you will probably want to spend at least a few dollars on a decent set of head phones because you are listening to sounds, not preset tones, and not necessarily the loudest sound(s) but the most distinct sound however faint it may be. Gold Nugget hunting by sound is a whole other critter than coin hunting with a Tone machine that requires no real skills to tell you what tone is for what set of items. On my old Garrett Freedom II Coin Commander (maybe one of the first NOTCH machines) that is all manual adjust, in the Pin Point mode, I can tell you by the sound, not a preset tone, about 99% of the time there is an aluminum can buried under the coil. The instructions do not tell you the Freedom II will do that in the Pin Point mode but I have learned that aluminum cans are associated with a particular sound in the pin point mode. I for one have what I will say are sufficient headphones, none of them are the high priced big name brand headphones and the least expensive pair I run on my 505 because what more do you need to interpret preset tones.

Well, I'm going against the grain here. I've got cheapies of several models, but have settled on Gray Ghosts. The Ghosts give a much cleaner, sharper sound at a pitch that suits my ears very well, whereas the cheapies I have sound hollow and fuzzy. The Ghosts look to be better built, the cords stay curled and they seal out outside noise quite well. That said, IMHO ANY HEADPHONES are much preferred to the built in speaker as headphone use puts you at one with your detector.

just tried killer bee headphones
they were high pitched which is excellent
and blocked out all the noise
very comfortable
but,,,,,,,,sound went on too long when you went over a target not a quick crisp break so you could make out the next target
so in review you need high pitch with clean crisp breaks
this helps on small targets like earrings or targets under 1/2 inch wide
or any find is a much clearer sound with no bass no fuzz
