Caught the glimmer of YELLOW at the bottom of the hole....

and it wasn't from Hercules doing his business.:bouncy::clapping:

I've been piddling with the 8" concentric Excelerator coil for the last few hunts and I must say it has been serving me well.

I was a little skeptical at first because it is the only concentric coil on the market for the explorers...and I never see much posted about it.

I know full and well that the double d coils are the ticket for mineralized ground...but depending on your area...if you have some ground that isn't too bad..this coil might help you out.

I put a few hours on it during 3 different hunts and it did well for me.

I will say this.... you have to absolutely CREEP with this coil while also overlapping your swings in order to get it to work some magic. However if you DO those two things....it will probably sniff out some goodies missed by even the small double D coils...at least it did for me.

The key to this coil for me was to use it where I knew the trash was deep...and the goodies were even a little deeper.

Because of the concentric shaped signal it "shoots" down into the ground...the deepest detection point is a tiny little laser...like an upside down sno-cone.

It didn't do too well for me in normal to shallow trash...I assume because the detection path was too big....BUT it killed for me where the trash was deeper...and that is one fact I definitely noticed.

Once I figured that out I started finding stuff...and realized what it was capable of..so I tried quite a few lower conductor hits as well..

The SWEET 14k gold religious charm came from right at 9" down and had two pieces of junk in the hole with it. This is the find that really opened my eyes because the junk was right at the 8" depth level...yet the tiny detection point nailed it an inch deeper.

I then hit a few spots that I knew had some good stuff hiding in the 8" to 10" level..but also had some deep trash too.

The "black Roosie" came from the "sandpit" that Phil, Dave, Brad, and I have hammered for months now...and was every bit of 10" down.

Funny thing about the sand pit...my long time hunting buddy Phil was the first to pop an old black silver out of there after we hammered it many times.

Since then that little spot has given up 12 black silver to me. Two or three hunts with nothing...then the next trip it will cough one up.

I will definitely be putting some time on this coil because I do have some sites here in IL that are not highly mineralized.

I usually like to do a very detailed report when I use or test a coil...flag possible targets...etc...but then again there are times where I just try to explain how, why, and where the coil can be a weapon for you. With mid 90 degree temps....lots of stress...lots of grass to mow...changes to my life...etc...this is what you're gettin'.:beers:

Is it gonna' become my main coil?....no...because you would have to beat me with a ball bat until I'm down...to take my 10 x 12 SEF coil from me.:) I'll guarantee you though...that I'll crack you from one knee and take it back. That's how much I like it.

This 8" concentric coil is a nice weapon though...and as I stated....can be very effective in situations and conditions as I described...and I WILL be using it.

It just amazes me that each coil is capable of finding stuff missed by other coils for different reasons and in different situations. This 8" concentric coil is no different ...and I was able to point out some keys to you as to how...and why it worked for me...so you can convey those points to your own hunting should you decide to try one.

Nice finds !!

Was considering the 8 X 6 SEF for my Explorer, but the pro-coil is exceeding my expectations, and I can't help but think that "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"...

And no other for the Minelab Explorer series ....... What coil would you buy next based on your long time experience ??

PS: Nice Find !

Bryce...since when did you start diggin low tones with that Explorer?
Congrats!:clapping:

Thanks bro.

I would recommend one of the small coils...5" Sunray....6" Excelerator...or 4.5" x 7" Excelerator....even the 6 x 8 SEF coil although I consider it a midsized coil.

IF they were to come out with a 4" x 6" SEF coil.....I would be one excited old feller'

Even though the 10 x 12 SEF.... 11" pro coil... and 12" Sunray coil give amazing separation between trash/good targets....NO way they can separate as well as a small coil in the trash.

You would be amazed at what all three of these EXCELLENT coils can leave behind for the patient and persistent hunter who is willing to tediously sift through trash laiden sites with a small coil.

My choice would definitely be to add a small coil to your arsenal.

Cool wwjd charm. When you get some spare time give me a buzz and we can try that coil ere at the old ball diamond with all the fill dirt and deep trash.

Bryce --

Awesome write-up, it makes alot of sense -- the application you are using that coil in. I can see where shallow trash and the wider, rounder beam transmitted by the concentric would limit the coils usefulness, but at depth, as the cone narrows, it could give you some really good separation. Very cool, Bryce, and VERY nice job hitting that gold!

Sorry about your "stress" and your "life changes." I hope all is well and whatever you are dealing with turns out OK...I'll keep praying for you...

Steve

Doesn't look like Hercules is a husky anyhow.

I also have the 8" concentric. Tried it a bit but perhaps need to try it more. I think what you are saying about slow and massive overlap on swings is true; also for the bigger DDs. Seems that there is a hot spot in the center of the coil that can get a good signal even in heavy trash.

Great pictures, nice finds, congrats on the gold  Still waiting for some gold to find it's way into my pouch for this year

Cool find buddy. Was glad to be there and see the look on your face when the gold came out of the ground.

[size=large]was trying out my 8x6 in what i considered eavey trash. resorted to your style of hunting. very slow and darn near cheching every little noise. very slow got me my second ever silver coin and my first rosie. 1946. but it was remembering your advice on slow. had to creep to each signal. the silver was 7" to 8" down. i got it because of your advise.thank you very much. went back last night and found more coins ( clad ) by doing the same thing. these were shallow though, 4" to 5".
one has to pay attention to the technique, slow motion, not just what size coil. that is the secret that you continue to hammer on. it works. it goes against my patience to swing so slow but it works. as soon as it quits raining around here ( tomorrow 80 degrees and sunny :hot:) me and that field are gunna work on your swing some more. :detecting:
HAVE A VERY GOOD DAY!!

Good stuff bud. Wtg on the gold. You must have been working hard chasing the low sounds.

Super nice hunt and report on the 8" coil Bryce........that gold religious charm is sweet!!! :super:

Hawkeye Jim.

Low tones pay good if you know how to listen to the different sound of gold and nickel in the pinpoint mode....much different uptake in sound than aluminum tabs...etc...

It's nice to see them black dimes our still coming out of there awesome job Bryce.
