Carved on US buckle

Went digging on Saturday to an old Confederate camp and dug this US buckle. It appears a soldier carved on it and made the U into a J......I first thought it was just deteriorated but the ground it came from is really good to relics and I can see marks on it where it has been carved with some kind of tool....? I also found this hat letter P.....

Nice stuff. I found a US buckle, excellent shape too. It had the initials WC carved on the back. This was before the internet came into being, and I sold it. Hated doing that! Good luck hunting!

Wearer had the initials JS? Curious as to what the P stands for….., nice finds!!!

Great Saves on some History right there. You have a one of a kind save on the carved U.S. Plate. Most times the letters of hat pins found represented a Regimental Co.This could also represent the wearers name. Gives you something to think about and ponder on. Congrat's on some very nice artifacts. An early Christmas present from a Confetrit' or Johnny Reb, from many years ago.
