Can't find nickels?

I have had my etrac out a dozen times and getting pretty used to it's sounds, numbers and I must say it's rather addicting too :detecting:. I already have about a coffee cup full of clad, a few silver jewelry pieces............but haven't picked a single nickel yet  I am using the factory settings as of now. Love the machine and can't wait to get into some better sites to hunt. If it is the settings masking andit means not many pull tabs, then I guess it is worth the trade off. Am I missing something(besides nickels)?

Probably have not put your coil across one yet. Low tone 12-13 or 14. Now the war nickels have a higher tone. Sounds like you are finding stuff so they will come. Good luck. HH :minelab:

Nickels are a tough cookie, on my old DFX they would tone just like a pulltab so I bet I passed over a bunch. You will know when you hit a war nickel though.

I have found more nickels with my E-trac than any other machine. As was already said. a solid 12-13 , 14 ususally for me is a nickel, but I have dug a few that were 10-12. I would say you just have not gotten the coil over them yet. Good luck with you future hunts.

I found a few more today. Found alot of dimes and quarters. Getting to know the machine alot better now. Also found a silver crucifix today :clapping:

I find in my neck of the woods (new england) nickels hit more 12-10 or 12-11 for me. So don't be fooled if it's slightly lower.

Amen! Found my first E-TRAC War Nickel today and read 12-15 and higher pitched tone This is also my first silver with the E-TRAC ! I'm Happy.

Sorry Guys But I did not start finding Nickels until I started using Bill's Trashy Park Program and G4E TTF program

My nickel count soared but using even the Open Coin Program does not result with as many Nickels as the two other Programs

I have found nickles from conductive 11 up to 15 in my soil and the ferrous numbers I really don't pay too much attention to unless it's higher than 25 (25-35) then forget it as it's usually junk. Today I'm working in another north country town a couple hours away and found a silver war nickle which was conductive 11 and I think the ferrous was like from 10 to 12 or maybe a bit lower like 9-11. Anything that hits conductive 11 through 14/15 I will dig but nickles won't always give a good hard hit you will get a blip of their sound usually which I have come to recognize and it stops me in my tracks and then I will open to the quick mask which is wide open and see what the numbers read and where the cursor is and it usually brings them right in clearly for me.

If they are shallow you won't have any problem at all hitting them but after a few inches they don't always hit real good so you have to listen and learn what tone they fall at on your machine so you will remember the sound in the future and come to recognize it from all the other low sounds.

I found 4 yesterday. They sound poor and come in at around 12-05 - 12-15. They sound just like a 22 bullet or other junk. I pretty muck dig every repeatable signal that has at least some depth.

my nickel count has greatly increased since I OPENED UP my nickel area discrimination and dig all numbers CLOSE to what nickels come in at, stuff like 07-14....09-15....10-14....etc....you get the idea.

Just remember that on the nickle range is the gold too, I found my first gold 14K ring on Memorial Day and it rung at 12-14,13,15 at 6" and when it was out of the hole it run solid at 12-18.
NOTE: the ring was on edge with the havy part facing down.
so Nicles numbers= gold as well.
thank you and HH.

Hold the detector a little higher each time you pass over the target to get used to things. Hope this helps.

Try This; black all the screen in the edit mode and take a nickle and accept it only. load that in a pattern mode and go to a park and just keep sweeping that coil untill you find one. I did that because i did not find any nickels at first either, but by setting my etrac like that i started finding those nickels and i have begun to learn to find them better, but you will dig pulltabs .

I still stand by this.......last hunt I hit a small ball diamond and dug 16 nickels in a short time........my screen is WAY open around nickel area, not closed

Listen to what Goes4ever says about nickels, I too had a problem finding many of them at first with my E-Trac, I followed his sage advice and my nickel count soared. TTF kills on nickels! You have to be willing to dig some pulltabs or two if you want to increase your nickel count. Open up the nickel slot too on your conductive patterns my partner Doug and I had a hunt earlier this year in which we dug over 50 nickels and just recently we had a hunt that gave us over 20 nickels including a Shield nickel each!

If you have not set up a test garden you aren't helping yourself some of the best hunters still use it and every nickel locks at 12-13 12- 14 for me

Nickels and pull-tabs are about identical. Nickels: 11-12, 12-12, 12-13, 12-14, 12-15 with Fe number varying up and down slightly depending on depth, orientation, and soil type.

Pull tabs run the gammit with more variability but cross through the nickel area and beyond.

I don't know of any way to know with assurance if there is a nickel or pull-tab under the coil without digging. Dig and you will find some nickels.

You can probably discriminate away some pull-tabs due to their wider variations but you're gonna dig those that occupy the Nickel area - and there are plenty of these. Probably about 10-15 to 1 in favor of pull-tabs in trashy areas.
