Can someone tell me why People buy the SEF coils over the Whites??

I noticed that quite a few people on this forum for the V3i have a SEF coil and are not using the Whites coils, so I was wondering what the difference is? I thought the Double D Whites coils were top of the line? I have a V3i and have tried to get out and use it as much as possible and have made some settings changes after lots of research of all your posts, but realize I have a lot to learn yet. I am also finding out that the Deep scan DD 1400 that I kept when I had a DFX won't work with my V3i, is this true? Why?

Coils for the v3 series are v-rated which is optimized for the 22.5 frequency.

Whites coils are absolutely superb and their service is unmatched, they are some of the best.

However the SEF coils with their patented butterfly design get superb depth, razor like separation and ultimate coverage. The new SEF coils for the v3's are white in color.

With the SEF 10x12 Expect around an inch better depth and more detection area under the coil with better separation. This being said I still recovered my first silver quarter with the D2 at a depth of 8"+. The stock coil is more than capable and I like to alternate through my coils to squeak out every last cent. Each coil sees things slightly different.

The 12x15 can be run in 7.5 frequency and the gain turned down to 4 and hunt practically right on top of power lines. Because the coil runs so deep the gain can be turned back and still see a silver dime at 6".

Having additional coils helps keep things fresh and mix it up and keeps me interested in experimenting. Try using the 7.5 single frequency and the 5hz band pass, I think you will be shocked at how many targets begin to appear in hunted out areas.

[size=large]there's a very good example of why on you tube between a 6x10 whites and the sef 8x6. mounted on a mxt. they are both good coils but the sef did wrap around the brick and picked out the nickel underneath where as the whites couldn't get past the brick. it is in the shape.

So how are the SEF coils in high trash areas? I was also wondering, you mentioned the new ones are white in color, does this mean they are new technology compared to the black ones? I noticed Kellyco has a black 6x8 I think it was and was wondering if this would be better in high trash areas, I just don't seem to find the good stuff, I have been doing some reading and some testing but have not found what settings work best in my area. I thought maybe one of these SEF coils would help to pick out the good stuff next to the junk?

They really can help, but what I have noticed is most important of all is, to go slow. Sef coils excel in high trash areas but you must swing slow and creep along. The white ones are v-nulled and work with the 22.5 frequency. The black ones may overload or act eratic in the 22.5 and this will screw with running 3 frequency.

Many of the guys here have had success with the black 6x8 even though its not v-nulled. I own just about every coil for the v3i, except a 6x10. I have been holding off on buying a 6x8 hoping that a v-nulled one will be made. You may get one that works perfect or you may get one that does not allow high gain or causes you grief. The White 10x12 is an excellent coil and I used in my high trash areas and found a gold plated pen and a silver hair clip the first day I took it out in my yard. I had been over this yard with all my other coils including my 4x6 and 5.3.

I would like the 6x8 and am not sure when I will purchase one.

As far as not finding the good stuff, I run mixed mode pro in single frequency 7.5 and keep the gain down to stop falsing. You just need to slow down and build confidence in your hunt. I know when I start getting disheartened I fail at finding anything at depth or of value. I start rushing and expecting the perfect signal that will stop me in my tracks...... I then have to stop and reevaluate why I detect.

Howdy seekingsilver--

On your White's 14 DD Coil, have you tested it on your V3i? If you haven't already, may I suggest that you set your detector on 22.5 kHz and perform air tests on various targets? You may be surprised and impressed by the results. Although it is NOT V rated, mine works just fine in all 3 frequencies. Best of luck and...

I have both coils and some of what is posted is physiological, IMHO. In my soil the SEF might handle the bad ground a little quieter, and I said might. I gain an inch with the 10x12 over the 10D2 but after all the 10x12 is bigger, but better?

Coils I will not recommend because if you think the one you have is better I won't be able to change your mind. It's like the halo arguement or "do coins sink arguement".

I look at it like a part of my tool box.It has better coverage when needed ,can coax things a lil deeper and is slightly lighter than the 10DD I think. Like a box end wrench or a ratchet end wrench just another tool in the box. Yazoo

Great analogy Mike.
