Buying first tesoro detector

Hello all..new to the forum but not metal detecting. I am looking to buy my first tesoro detector. I already have a detector with all the bells and whistles including manual ground balance (Whites qxt pro) . I am contemplating buying the compadre or the silver umax or actually both. The silver may be a little more versatile while the Compadre hits those small gold jewelry and cleans up well in trash or at least my studies have led me to that . I don't want to buy both if one isn't really going to get me an advantage over another especially for the price difference. I know one has a true all metal discrimination (compadre) the other has I think built in mineral rejection or something to that nature (silver Umax). From your experiences which has or is your trusty turn on and go detector if you own one or both. Also which coil do you like on the compadre..5.75 or 8"

i have the compadre..5.75 its great in trash and a lot of fun the 8" deeper and a lot of fun or the silver umax with 5.75 and 8" coil is a lot of fun sorry i cant be more help and welcome to the forum

Compadre is my go to machine, always fun and indescribable performance for a low priced machine. I own both but with my newly acquired Vaquero Im thinking of selling my Silver, the compadres on the other hand will never be sold. I just feel the Vaq fills the void of the Silver easily so no need for it. Some people love the Silver and I had a bit of luck with it but I didnt see the quality finds I did with the other machines. I recommend buying both and selling the one you like less.If i were and octopus I would have a different tesoro in each hand lol

If you want to sell the silver, I may be interested

Does it really matter what Tesoro you buy when they are all so very good?

It depends. If you want the most bang for the buck, you can't beat the Compadre. I think the biggest determining factor will be your type of soil. If you have high mineralization, then you are going to need to be able to ground balance. That means an Outlaw, Vaquero, Tejon or Lobo (Tiger Shark too if you want to consider a water machine). If you don't need to ground balance, then you're hard pressed to beat the Compadre for what you pay. It's biggest drawback is that you can't swap coils.

It's been my observation doing air tests, that the higher end Tesoros are most effective in all metal. Once you crank up the disc, you are now dealing with depths close to the Compadre (which doesn't lose any depth from all metal to high disc).

I'm in the process of posting a 6-part series on YouTube to prove this. I'm quite the amateur at movie making, but I think you will see despite the shaky camera work that the Compadre is pretty impressive, not for any outstanding depth, but for the fact that the depth is consistent.

Relichunter 78 - by your forum name I assume you do a fair bit of relic hunting. You have a good machine in the Whites, but I'd strongly recommend any of the Tesoros with manual ground balance for the best performance and depth in mineralized sites. Tejon and Vaquero especially, closely followed by the Outlaw or Bandido II or Eldorado umax to mention several that you may find a clean used model.

If I was going to go all out on one detector, I would chose the vaquero. My whites has a great manual ground balance. I am thinking about the more simple tesoros not only as a back up but for my wife and son as well. I do know one thing, I have searched high and low for a good used vaquero or a bandido. I have not found any bandidos but the used vaqueros on ebay are about the same price as a new one once you include shipping from the ebay seller. I am in alabama and used tesoros for sale locally are hard to find.

Look forward to the series and thanks for the info.

RelicHunter78,

I agree with BarberBill that the Vaquero would be my 1st choice but it seems that you have other criteria to consider.

I use a Vaquero and a Silver Sabre uMax. I use the 5 3/4 inch coil on both of them probably 60% of the time. The Silver Sabre uMax is similar to the Silver uMax in performance.

For a more simple tesoro for back up AND wife and son as well I'd go with the Silver uMax and get a 5 3/4 concentric coil. You should be able to ge a good coil for $50 or $60.
The Silver uMax is a great machine and reasonbly priced. With the standard coil it has very good depth. I do find I use the smaller coil most of the time when there are a lot signels close together.

If you like the Vaquero but don't want a detector with manual gb you might want to consider the Cibola.

Everyone should own a Compadre with a 5.75 inch coil. They kick butt!

Okay, the video is public now. Thanks to my son for not only fixing this, but for a crash course on Microsoft MovieMaker. This stuff comes naturally to kids these days!

Dan that's a super nice video. You need to start a new topic with it in it so it will be easy to find.

Great video dan b. That was about the results I got until I went and started messing with the sens pot. Thanks for taking the time to do it. I had the Silver Umax and while I had good results with it the loss of depth when you crank up the sens was why I got rid of it. If you hunt in all metal or min. disc then it won't matter, but there are times I want to cherry pick the coins and the Compadre does the better job in my opinion. :beers:

Dan I thought you did a nice job with the video, very helpful and surprising results with the compadre. Thanks for taking the time to make and share. Enjoyed.

Dan..that was very helpful. I believe I am going to get a compadre with the 5.75. I currently do not have a small coil on a detector for cherry picking the trash lots. For the heck of it..I think I will get the silver umax as well. Can you really have enough detectors? I was really trying to decide between the 5.75 and the 8 inch coil on the compadre but I have heard too many good things about the compadre and the 5.75 coil being really special together.
