I think this is a civilian button, it has a "flur de les" (?) on it and that is French, the Crown is very odd and not the type used on French Military buttons that I have seen. I would say it is period .
Also the French had got rid of the Crown on thier Military buttons at the time of thier Rev during the 1790s.

I agree with Dean that its a civilian button, especially due to the condition of the back as you described. Probably has some age to it, but don't think its period. Just my opinion.
 
i was going to leave him to freeze after he found it but just couldnt do it. LOL
