Bury me with my Sovereign GT...

...or the loose nut behind the control box.

Hunted yesterday for 2 hours, pulled a memorial cent and a button. Lots of nulling. Rick has suggested all along that I try at a different site. I guess I'm gonna have to do that and see what happens.

Thansk,

joe

I have seen many times over the years that a new Sov user will go to the worst possible location then get frustrated.

You need to start out at locations where there is not much trash, and gradually get used to it. You have to work up to the bad spots as you learn the detector.

I'll meet you this Saturday.

I see you already have Clive's book. Read whatever you can on the Excalibur too, it is basically the same machine as the Sovereign. Someone else who can help you and will not mind talking to you at all is David Keith at Dixie Metal Detectors in Madison, TN. I call him from time to time about my Sovereign. He has used one inland for many years and can tell you a lot about it. He is never in a hurry to get off the phone and is really helpful.

I have another idea too. Take your Garrett and the Sovereign out. Use the Garrett to find signals you will dig. Mark them either by sticking a stick in the ground or with a poker chip. Then go back with the Sovereign and see what it tell's you. Lower your sensitivity on the Sovereign until it is stable and you still have a good signal. Then dig and see what you have.

Rick, you said:

Run in iron mask on, put the switch for silent search in threshold and set for a slight hum so you can hear everything the coil will see, this way when it nulls you know it is over iron or a disc target.

Why do you use silent search and set the threshold so you can hear it? Why not just use threshold, why silent if you are going to set the threshold to be heard?

Julien

Where do you set your disc? I usually keep mine on zero but maybe I need to raise it a bit. I hit a lot of square nails with my GT but they usually do the double beep. I also dig lots of bottlecaps and can slaw that read good.

I am pretty sure I have been running my sens too high. I've been reading some of Clive and am going to try again with lower sens and lower volume.

Thanks,

Julien

I guess you can look at it 2 ways the way I posted it and could confuse some. The switch is silent search or threshold and I meant to set it to a threshold and not silent search and set to a slight threshold so you know what the coil is seeing at all times.
Sorry if confused anyone.

The volume control on the Sovereign is not threshold volume, but signal volume so if you turn it down the deeper signals may not be heard. The threshold volume is the threshold control which can be turned down to a very slight hum.

I keep disc all the way down.
Only get a nail only hit once in a great while compared to how many nails are usually present. Yes, they tend to double ping from the right direction and will null out at 90 degrees from that. Some days the ground moisture makes things worse than on other days. Also which coil you use will have an effect on how many bogus iron hits you get.

I run sensitivity at 12 o'clock on the GT and 11 o'clock on the 2a when possible . Will run lower if conditions warrant, but never higher unless it's a new location and I'm checking out what the optimum sensitivity setting is for that location.
I find a weak non-ferrous target and see what setting gives me the strongest hit.....both in volume and how high I can raise the coil before losing the target. This gives me the best depth, tones and meter reading when conditions allow searching at this peaked out setting. Often I have to back it down from there because of ground conditions, trash, or electrical interference. Running higher causes the depth to drop off, nails and other iron to ping, meter readings to drop, and audio starts sounding bad.

You won't get away from all the can slaw and bottle caps. Often there is something about the sound that says "trash" if you listen close enough.

I do need to point out that I hunt for almost anything....not just coins. So...I do like to listen to the entire audio spread for anything that sounds different from the trash.

Art,

Thanks for the tip re: Mr Keith.

I thought about doing the double sweep using the Garrett, maybe I will do just that.

The more I read about, the more I think maybe the Sensitivity setting is my biggest issue. I'm going to experiment with it today.

I'm heading out in a few minutes. Even if I am having problems, I still get excited just getting ready to go out.

You got me and jbow mixed up, Joe.

Dave is fun to talk to, but he is also a big fan of hunting in all metal. You can try whatever he suggests and see if it is practical for you.

I know exactly what you mean... this hobby is way more than a hobby. I really get's under your skin.

My biggest problem right now is not having a good place to hunt without driving 45+ minutes in traffic. That is discouraging. I had a great local site but after nearly two years it has become stingy. It was a yankee calvary camp that had been hunted very little.
