Bullet ID help.

I found this bullet in Macon, Ga. last Sunday and haven't been able to ID it yet. It is solid lead, not jacketed. It has been fired and while it may be hard to see in the pictures there are two grooves in it. I can't tell if there is reeding in the grooves because they are too compressed from being fired.

You have enough info here that it should be able to be identified. My initial thought on the short but fat bullet is possible a shotgun slug?

This almost resembles a Williams Cleaner bullet, but it's not a cleaner. You may have found a True mystery bullet. Best of luck with the ID. I hope you and your family have been well.

I would say .41 cal. Rimfire. The Remington two shot Derringer and it's clones were very popular pocket guns once upon a time. They had a reputation of being very deadly due to the outside lubricated bullet and all the pocket fuzz & germs it carried into the wound.

That is a good possibility. I will check into it.

I just realized something. I don't think it is a .410 slug because it has rifling marks on it. Aren't .410 guns smoothbores?

The rifling is the key to my ID. I too thought .410 3" slug until I saw the engraving.

I am surprised it is not Hollow Base though.

I think JCR TX is on the right track, 41 Rimfire used a 130 gr bullet 13 gr of black powder and got about 425 fps. Another possibility would be a 41 Volcanic the exterior looks close. It's a very interesting early repeater (and caseless!) you can find info searching on Volcanic repeater or Volcanic 41, Cool find.

Just an FYI….. the Taurus Judge and S&W Governor have rifled barrels due to being able to shoot 45 Long Colt as well as 2.5” 410s. From my experience it is sometimes hard to age lead bullets in the ground. Copper jacketed turns colors somewhat but lead not so much. But, I’m thinking yours is older that what I was proposing.

But, way too small to be a cleaner. All my other bullets are packed away right now until I get my man cave up and running or I would take a comparison picture.
