Brief rant

I've been doing this for 30 years ever since I was a kid and usually don't file a complaint too much but here goes. Have yall noticed just how many more folks are getting into this hobby in the last several years? When i started it was mostly just some hard core mostly male guys who had juvenile visions of turning a pot of Blackbeirds treasure. Now I have to find a pretty isolated spot w/o someone stopping for MD advice. This week a guy pulled his work vehicle over in the road got out just as I had begun to dig and started in. His wife had bought him a $75 job for Christmas that had never left the box and he wasn't sure of the name.( I guessed it) He wanted to dig a landing near his camp. Said his son had a $1000 machine. I suggested he get his son to show him how to use his but the son wasn't sure how to use his either. This is typical. Guy with a golf cart stopped me at a park recently and was interested in a machine. While I was doing an old house a lady walking past stopped me and asked me about the hobby. She had bought one at Costco and yep never left the box. One of my friends just bought a used model but he's in terrible physical shape and can barely bend down. One of my best friends this week told me a mutual friend had just bought one and I would probably be getting a call. Another friend is producing a new reality series dedicated with MDing as the theme. Which gets me to my point. I'm suspicious that the recent reality shows featuring MDing is behind a lot of what i've shown giving a lot of folk the idea that they can purchase anything, read the manual(most of which are sorry) go out and gold coins will start popping up like daisies. Heck it's harder for me make good finds now than it used to be. I don't necessarily think we're ruining the hobby. Most of these machines will wind up in a corner for good quickly. But I am concerned that all of these newbies may not know how to use proper etiquette while digging and hurt everyone. Oh yea forgot to mention another fellow. After I got permission to do his site, he wants me to set him up with one, even gave me the price range. Thinking of quitting and starting a MD consultant firm:)

I don't mind people wanting to know.
I typically carry the Ace250 just for such occasions.
I really enjoy watching them dig their first clad.
For real fun I'll pull out my oll MXT and call coins as I dig them. That really gets em going.

I understand the love of the dig.
The peace and quiet it brings.
I'm never more relaxed after a good long session with MD shrink.

They rarely stick around long.

So I humor them.

Unless our paths cross naturally somehow, I don’t like people approaching me for any reason. I’m out there for MY entertainment, not theirs. Time is a precious enough commodity in MY life without having some yutz coming along and taking even more of it. And to tell you the truth, especially in the face of this virus….just stay away.
 
What a range of discussion! Self-gratification to helping anyone. To each his own I guess. I've met a lot of people that see me detecting and want to talk which I always do. It's amazing the number that have detectors and are " thinking about getting back to detecting". I detect on both sides of a state highway in fields so a lot of people see me. The point is that not one, let me repeat, not one could tell me the manufacturer much less the model of their detector. Got to be a bunch of detectors in closets.

No doubt about it Wild Willy, and more every day being added.

I know I get queried more today then at any other point I've been with the hobby. Still mostly men and still mostly Charles Garrett or Mel Fisher wannabe's. I'll talk for a few minutes, but pretty quickly get around to asking them what kind of detector they have. Those that don't know, which are most, I politely say they need to really read the manual first and foremost....and slide my headphones back up and saunter away. A goodly number of people are simply just curious and I'll spend a couple of minutes with them, hoping they will get to their main question of what's the best find I have ever made....or the most valuable one, sooner then later. Occasionally a fellow will show a genuine interest in the hobby and I will suggest he attend one of our club meetings. The invitation also works quite well for ending conversations. Hey, our metal detecting club meets the 3rd Th of the month starting at 7p at (location). Check us out and see what we and the hobby are all about. HH jim tn
 
Interesting topic. Last year I was hunting an old school. There was a little girl in the house next door swinging one of those cheap units. I would guess she was around 10. She put here detector down and came to watch me a bit. Usual chit chat and she asked me if I would check a target for her. Her dad was in the yard and he said go ahead. I checked it and I knew it was big. Dad comes over with a small garden spade and him and his daughter popped out a mid 60s license plate. They thought that was just great! It also gained me permission to hunt their property which was adjacent to the old school. I did find a couple of mercs on that property. So yes...I will stop and talk to some people.
 
Ted S pointed out one of the two reasons I don't mind talking to people.

One is that I don't mind sharing an interest and fun of this great sport, as well as being helpful, if possible.

The Second is because I have gained access to hunt private property many times, and seldom does it not pay off.

Along the way a few of the inquisitors were really serious about this detecting pastime and got into it and became good friends and hunting buddies.

At the beach it is not uncommon for some one wanting to talk. they are usually satisfied after a couple of minutes. Some are more persistent. it depends on how small their bikini is as to how long we talk. I might be old but i still enjoy a nice view. I have had very few people approach me when detecting the dirt. HAD ONE lady who would come and strike up a conversation. I would talk for a minute and then move along. After the fourth time she approached me i left the area.

Good looking approached me a 4th time.
She'd be taking me home. LoL
 
There seems to be more competition lately and you have to work hard to find worthwhile places to hunt. The Obvious locations seem to be busts- everyone has the same Idea to hunt it.
Odd places seem to hold more treasure.
I will never forget my first Gold Ring find on an occupied vacation type beach- It had Diamonds!
My first inclination was to hide it and act like nothing happened...
I never thought about it or prepped myself to how I would react. I guess I was instantly worried everyone was watching me and someone would come over and say- "Thanks! You found my ring!"
I get approached on the fresh water beaches the mostly with the basic question. "Find anything good?"
Not hard to to tell the truth - "Not Much just pennies" Which is usually the case.
My best secret spot that produces gold is a small county park with a small beach. It gets a lot of traffic but not well known.
At times I see evidence of someone else digging the sands and not covering the holes.
I go deeper in the water than they do. Lately finding more Tungsten style rings

I almost had the exact same thing happen except it was a rosie.
 
I think a lot of newbies are shocked when they learn how physically exhausting this hobby can be.After a few fruitless outings many newly purchased detectors end up stuck in a closet…

Even if you enjoy the hobby, it is HARD WORK, because I never knew when to QUIT before I was worn out from swinging & digging all day! Still wish I still could though! Ma Betty
 
One has to remember we were all newbies at one point….. some of us gain a stronger interest and remain with the sport and others spin their wheels and bail. I can usually size up a person upon approach and call a honest inquiry from a “share your secret” walk up. I love spending a little time time with the young ones as I would rather shape their opinions on this hobby now than some eco-nut job telling them about all the damage they think we are doing to the environment (imagine how far forward we could get if we could just spend a little time with a youngster and a firearm? In both cases early opinions forge stronger bonds later). Respectfully presented can gain a vote later on.
