Sounds like the stock coil may be faulty. You will know for sure when you put it back on. Might want to use the 5X8 for awhile and get to know the detector before switching back to the stock coil. Good luck.GrantT said:Coincidentally, I had ordered a MGC 5x8 sniper coil and it arrived here in the office this morning. Based on the advice of miserman, I pulled the batteries for a while, but I also put on the new coil.
Ground balanced immediately (46) after reassembly.
So, later I'll go back to the factory coil and try GB again as well. Battery pull might have done it! Will let you know.
GrantT said:Went out to the field behind our office today at lunch (there is a sand volleyball pit and lots of grass) to do some testing, and first thing I noticed was that I was not able to ground balance.
As per the instructions/videos, I hold the detector coil up about 3' in the air, push the toggle switch forward (machine says "pump coil") but then after a few pumps up/down it comes back with the can't balance message. Tried it over sand and grass.
Any ideas? Factory reset and tried again....same thing.
GrantT said:Hey Ron,
Thanks for the suggestion. Sorry...no, 3' was sort of just explaining where I was initially holding the coil when getting everything started...I'm doing the ground balance from around 6" to 1" just like the instructions. Just poor wording on my part.
Did more testing tonight...and nothing will ground balance in my own back yard, but when I went to a remote abandoned yard nearby, I was able to ground balance without any issue with the stock coil - number was a 68 I think. Repeated it a dozen times and worked every time.
But, back home, nothing....was able to get a ground balance once, and it came in at 41...so very close to the 40 where the manual says it cannot work with.....so, I think it's just my yard.

All that means is that you don't have any minerals in your dirt. That is sweet dirt.
Ground balancing is used to cancel the response of ground minerals. If you don't have much in the way of minerals in your dirt, then you don't even need to ground balance. Just use the preset and go.
Its pretty common in Louisiana and Florida but I didn't know you Canadians had any dirt like that.
