Bottle cap mode "3b" works well, (Repost)

I haven't updated it yet. I can still often tell a bottle cap because the ground meter will often spike on them, especially if rusty.

I do often hunt parks but my favorite areas are the sports fields where I don't run into bottle caps much anyway. Other trash is usually minimal too and silver rings are not uncommon there. (Still hoping for some gold jewelry.)

I usually run my disc lower though, just below nickels. I tend to avoid the zinc readings (unless deep) and dig most everything else. I find that strong nickel signals usually are nickels -- I got buf that way.

I end up digging a lot of clad this way and some silver coins & jewelry too.

Paul, you must be a young man. I would be lame for a week if I bent over to probe or dig that many coins. I have yet to use the bottle cap mode. I have the perfect place to try it, but I might have to wait until next spring. You are a lucky dog to live in a warm climate. Keep all of us northerners posted on your winter hunting; we will be reading and watching with great anticipation. R.L.

I think my problem was that I used a low disc and that made the T2 go crazy I guess you are not going to look for gold rings or else you are going to dig trash all day. Have you ever tried a clean park well not clean but you know what I mean?

Thanks to you for taking the time to educate everyone that the T-2 can be a nice detector for all types of sites. It's been unfairly labeled a 'relic hunter'.

There are some fellas who no longer own T-2's and seem to enjoy fueling the rumors of some unstoppable bottle cap flaw.

Obviously they never tried 3-B mode- got the update- or kept the detector long enough-

Again- thank you for a real fine post :)

Keep diggin'
Jack

I was trying different yesterday and was mainly detecting in 3. I decided I would try the different setting if I thought I had a good deep signal. I was running at 55 sens when I got the signal that was reading 86 to 89. I switched to 4 tone and I was getting the signal but not as strong and no display. I went to dp and the same as 4. Switched to 3b and received no tone or display. Went back to 4 and cranked the sens to 90. I now got the display and louder signal as I did with 3. Went back to 3b with the sens at 90 and still no signal. Went back to 3 and dug the target. It was a 1958 quarter which was easily at a 10 inch depth! So, the only reason I think it wouldn't pick up in 3b is because this ground is so full of iron that it canceled the coin as it just saw too much iron in the soil? I will include a pic of my finds and hopefully you can see all the iron deposits on these coins. I have detected this area alot with other top brand detectors and the T2 still produced! This area was a girl scout camp which closed in the early 70's. The rest of the quarters in the picture are from the late 60's and early 70's as are the dimes except one which is a 63.
I can honestly say the T2 cuts through iron and minerals like no other detector I've used!! For having an 11" coil this thing does GREAT in trash with superior seperation. I also need to mention my Fe bar read 0.3 and 1 on average.

Just thought some of you might want to check this 3b out next time you get a deep one in some heavy minerals. Maybe its just my machine?

WTG Larry on the silver quarter, T-2 can and will detect deep coins once the user is familiar with the T-2 which appears you have learned the T-2 well.

Nothing wrong with your T-2 using the 3b mode, Using the 3b mode will not detect as deep as the other modes and sometimes the deeper coins will sound broken. The 3b mode really is better used for areas full of bottle caps and searching for clad coins from surface down to about 5-6 inches, Anything deeper then the coin signal will come in broken or not at all.

So for deep turf coin or relic hunting the 3b mode should not be used and only when searching for clad at trashy areas, The 3b mode is modified to help eliminate digging steel bottle caps so in doing so I believe allot of depth is loss using this mode even if cranking up the sensitivity.

Thanks for sharing your T-2 day yesterday and Congrats again with the silver quarter.

Hello LAWRENZO,

You can operate the T-2 with little disc at a trashy site but if you

Hello R.L.

Honesty, I may appear to look young but my innards and limbs feel like a rag doll. Hard life, But a good life too.

Yes, We have good weather here in Ca. even during the winter months. We can detect year round if our jobs, families and health will permit us too, We are so lucky.

Try out the bottle cap mode at that particular side you mentioned, You

Sounds like you

Folks this such a good forum, thats why I made my home page. These forums you can not only post finds for everybody to see, you can learn to better operate your T2 through other peoples trials and errors. Someone said the T2 was a mustang and the challenge is to tame it. I mostly relic hunt but I'll also coin hunt when I get the chance and all these post are really great to try other peoples set up and pass on tricks that you have learnd. Keep the information rolling in. We can smile when we go back to all these hunted out sites and rehunt them out again. When I dug a budwieser beer can at 20 inches I knew that I wouldn't be selling my T2. Civil War cannon balls here I come. Will be going to try to find some this weekend. Happy hunting all.

Sorry about bringing up this post from the grave, I know it will help those wanting to avoid bottle caps from extremely trashy areas.

It works! Bottle caps are a thing of the past if you use this setup for clad hunting, I wouldn't recommend it for deep turf hunting due to losing depth and sensitivity when using the 3b mode. This setup works best when clad hunting.

Hi Paul,

Great post, about all I would add is that in my area I've gotten Indian head pennies that registered between 80 and 82, so around here I think you'd wanna dig those.

Thanks Lillo,

That's true, Indian pennies do read a little lower and using the approach I was sharing would miss Indian pennies.

The approach I was sharing is for users wanting to search for clad, Quick pocket change while avoiding most bottle caps.

Plus, the 3b seriously cuts down on depth and weakens the signal, Not a good mode for relic or serious old coin hunting but an effective mode for quick clad from trashy areas.

Best wishes,
HH, Paul (Ca)

Thought this post was worth sharing again, not sure if the new T2 has the 3b mode but if it does it's a great feature.

Also, My T2 back then copper pennies and dimes read 83 or 84 if memory serves me right, 3b mode was great eliminating bottle caps. Using 3b the T2 lost some depth, but for quick clad it was terrific in trashy areas.
