Blew the dust off my E-trac

Harold said:
We have a couple clowns here in Chicago filming tearing up the parks with there shovels. I think all they care about like most newbees is there silver count. I never even use to keep track of silver in 15 years detecting. But when I got the E-trac I did the first year or two just to see how many I could get. Anyways these clowns hunted one of my sites with there shovels and got all detecting banned there. They are the big silver guys on another forum. I guess as long as they get there big silver count that is all they care about so they can be the big man on the other forum. They already got most cook county preserves closed to detecting and pretty soon it will be the parks.
Sorry to hear those guys are giving detectorists a bad name. We've got a few like them around here too. I've seen the mess left behind by guys digging in parks with shovels. It's never pretty. I also have seen posted videos with guys digging in parks with shovels. Astounding.

Remember I told you that in a particular city a park official saw some pics on a metal detecting club site in that city and threatened legal action? Well that was the club I belonged to for a couple of years. It was the Central Ohio Metal Detecting Association (COMDA) in Columbus, Ohio. Here is the email the club president received through the website on June 13, 2012:

Name: Tina
Email: tmmohn@columbus.gov
Comments: Hello, my name is Tina Mohn and I'm the Property manager with Recreation and Parks I've received a few email and calls regarding your organization and the metal detecting, especially within Goodale, Schiller and adjacent Community Parks. We have some photographs of the hunts as well. I would just like to bring to your attention a few concerns that the City has. Any sort of ground disturbance is in direction violation of City Code 912 and 919. We request that you and any members of the orgainzation cease and disist in any disturbance of park property. Should this continue, the organization will be contacted by the City Attorney's Office and/or the Columbus Police Dept.
Please contact me with any questions.

Thank you

Some of you know the president of that club. He used to post here. His nickname is Nick A. Nick is one of the most responsible and well respected detectorists I've ever had the privilege to know and hunt with. I guarantee you the pics on the site were harmless and portrayed our hobby in the best light. I've hunted with the other members of that club for a few years. They prided themselves in taking special care to be neat and leave a park in the same condition as they found it. Actually they left it in better shape by removing all the garbage, broken glass and rusty nails they found. Better in a pouch than a kids foot. When I was a member of that club, we met at parks with trash bags and walked around picking up every piece of garbage in sight. There were pics from cleanups on the site too. You just couldn't find a more conscientious group. But a few people got upset and called Tina Mohn. She looked at the pics on the site and...well...you read her email. Nick promptly shut the website down and another club official posted the club is temporarily shut down too. Metal detecting is no longer permitted in Columbus parks. That's just sad.

What perplexes me is the fact that it wasn't clowns like the ones you mentioned who were targeted. They threatened a group of good, responsible detectorists.

Nice finds!
I wondered where you got to.
I hunt mainly for exercise and the vitamin D, but I do love finding things and discussing them here.
It's good clean fun!
It is a great hobby as long as you keep it a hobby!
