bigger coil for Garrett AT Gold, nel coil?

Hi everyone,
I have ordered an AT Gold. But was thinking of also getting a larger coil. I can't find much information on the 8.5" x 11" coil being used on the AT Gold. If anyone has this set up i'd like to hear about it. While searching for the reviews on the bigger DD coil I came across NEL and SEF coils. seemed very interesting to me. Did a lot more digging(just like i hope to do this spring and summer and fall) and came across this NEL coil for the AT GOLD. Does anyone have any experience with NEL coils or exclusively this coil I think the measurements are 12" x 13" looks awesome in the video, but i don't know russian so i can't be sure. but 45cm comes to about 17" on air test depth. That's pretty impressive. Since most of the time the older something is the deeper it will be in the ground. it would be a nice 1-2-punch with the smaller 5" x 8" coil that comes stock with the AT GOLD.

Below is also a link to an explanation on coils for further reading.

I just bought one. The 12x13 two days ago. I will be posting all my air test and nail test I can do. I had a tornado nel 12x13 for my xterra 705 and it rocked. very deep and impressive target seperation. I have the 8x11 and 5x8 dd coils currently. Im going to compare how they all stack up and give everyone the results. I also saw where it hit a quarter at 14,15 inches. Thats impressive . Its expensive for a coil... but if it gains four or five inches... then for my hunting it would be worth the long term investment

yeah that is good info for the at pro. but my question is for the at gold. I know there's also a graph that shows the at gold is deeper than the at pro when at gold is in all metal mode. sometimes by a couple inches, which is why i purchased the at gold over the at pro. i was just wondering if anyone used the stock coil for the at pro on the at gold? very interested since i think with more power on the at gold would probably handle the larger coil better. which is why i think a lot of the at pro detectorists are going to the 5"x8" coil that is stock on the at gold. i also realize they switch for better target seperation. but i'm just curious, and probably have too much time on my hand since my detector is supposedly close to being in transit. that huge nel coil has to get a few more of these people a little excited. No?
thanks for the insight,
Les

awesome, swkimball85!
i have a few questions. will you be putting it on an at gold or an at pro? also if it is the at gold. what kind of better depth do you get with just the 8.5x11 coil over the 5x8 coil. thursday is payday so i'm thinking of pulling the trigger on it. i'm a little leary of dealing out of the u.s. but i have read other reports where the guy that runs the company is an outstanding bussiness man. the coil is a lot cheaper if you buy from the website i posted instead of ebay.
thanks for all responding,
Les

The at gold is deeper in all metal and was the machine i wanted. But i got a new sports pack on the at pro at a really good deal and couldnt pass it up. The coil should work with both I assume. Kinda like all the pro amd gold coils are interchangable. If anyone from mid mo wants tomeet up with thier at gold and test depth comparisons against all the different coils and machines lets do it! I just want to try and inform anyone aneveryone to the best of my knowledge. Since I have always been so into that extra inch out of my detectors... but also with the pros and golds you get such a fast "reset" recovery speed , it would be the best of both worlds. I bought mine from the auction house for 195 but its the 12x13.. not the 13x14..

i agree it should work on both. i wasn't able to find the 13x14 coil. where did you see it. If i'm going to get a bigger coil, i'm going to go with the biggest one i can find. weight doesn't bother me. i think the biggest Nel will go on other detectors is 15x17 which is massive. but i can't find it for the at gold or pro. what website did you buy yours from?
thanks again,
Les

i had one made about a year ago for my pro international by the company been sent back got new one. but still no good still cant use it .so iam hopping garrett will bring out bigger coil

what size was it? and it was made by nel?

its was NEL 12x13 it was erratic could not ground balance .i have at pro international usa model is at pro iam not sure it there is difference in coil types i presume there just same but any way keep meaning to send back i know when making it there was delay as could not get it right .may be you will have beter luck than me

that was a year ago??? maybe they finally perfected it because the tornado is 12x13 and in the video it shows tremendous depth(albeit air test). did you try manual ground balance? i would try to send it in says 3 year warranty.

I bought mine off ebay . but now i see they have the 13x14.... i bought the 12x13..... BUT... just to let you all know.. last year I bought three nel coils from a seller on the bay.. and I got a way better deal on each by emailing him and working out a deal... granted it was through western union and I had to send money to the dealer direct... kinda risky but it did pay off.. recieved all three nel tornado coils within two weeks. One for a fisher F4 and the other two for the xterra 705.. a 12x13 and a 15x17 coil. tobe totally honest the 12 x 13 gotabout the same depth as the 15x17. maybe like half inch less.... The 12x13 .. for the xterra anyway ,, seperated way better and weighed almost half! That was for the xterra so they might have changed the coils around since then. I noticed the design is different now. They used to offer just a tornado coil. Now they have a newer storm coil. lol they must love weather over there....
The one I bought was labled tornado coil but had the picture of the newer storm looking coil. not sure what the difference is. And really not sure what Im going to get. I hope its stable like my last ones. They wereimpressive. If not then.. well thats my gambling money for the yearlol...

alright just checked on the weights and the difference on the tornado and storm coils...
the nel storm coil is the 13x14 weighs about 680-700 grams.... not bad
the nel tornado coil is the 12x13 and weighs about 580-600 grams.. ( grams depending on which seller your reading)

Also as a side note it looks like that they changed the old nel tornado coil design. The newer nel coils and storm coils look very similar. Maybe they found a new coil design that gets better depth , seperation and or less erratic than the older version.

nice info, swkimball85!
i just found the 13x14 STORM and told him i was bragging him up on the forums. also requesting info on the "Big" 15x17 coil. Wondering if there is any substantial data or depth he could provide me with and a price if it is available. i know on the website he has converted to paypal so western union shouldn't need to be used anymore. i did find the "big" coil on youtube and the difference depth shown was impressive. I will let you guys know what he comes back at me with. I hope your "tornado" coil is awesome, it does seem it will be providing everything is true in the video they released in my first post. $230 + $30 shipping for the storm. OUCH! But if it is worth it I can justify pulling the trigger.

One other question, what's the frequency on the xterra? 18khz? if so that's what the AT GOLD runs at too. so that's interesting to compare.

Thanks,
Les

both xterra nel tornado i got was the mid freq. not the higher one. At the time they didnt even offer the lower freq. They have the lower freq for a pretty penny.
The older style tornado on the xterra would easily hit a quarter at 14 .with sound only at 15 air test. Ill be 100% honest with you though. I once had on that 15x17 nel on my xterra. I was hunting with my friend. he had an at gold with the 5x8 coil, I was hitting a dime penny signal with the depth meter pegged. He checked it and didnt get anything.. which i didnt expect him to once i found out just how deep it was.... an early girl scout belt buckle at about 22 inches. not joke. I dont know how it hit it.. but the nel pulled it through. it wasnt really that big of a buckle either Im excited about the coil. Maybe they make one just for the at pro ajd one just for the gold? slightly different freq maybe??Nel is a rock solid coil too Built very well. .

i noticed that the storm was for the at pro. and the tornado for the at gold. not sure if it matters or not since they do have different frequencies. but then again how is the at pro and the at gold coils interchangeable??? I emailed him asking for information. i hope he gets back to me.

I also found this NEW coil for NEL it is called the ATTACK. 15" no videos or anything. it took forever to find info on it, including translating some pages to english using google. I think this may be the one for me.

I have had after market coils on both my Minelab and Garrett. The large coil on my Minelab did not give very much more depth then the stock coil. It was useless in light to moderate trashy areas, as it picked up everything, and isolating individual targets was an issue as was masking from other targets. The larger coils are not sensitive to tiny targets, and usually can not be operated with as a high sensitivity as a smaller coil. One of the after market coils for the Garrett GTI series quit working all together, unless I taped a penny to it. So....I sent it back to the manufacturer with a letter, only to get it back several weeks later with a "no such address" sticker on it. And that was in the USA. Sending it overseas would have cost a fortune, a much greater loss. A bigger coil will get only more depth to a point, then rendered useless. Bigger is not always better.

The largest and best coil for any metal detector is one designed by the engineer who designed the electronics for the detector in the first place. At least if the coil has issues, the manufacturer can repair the coil/detector combination to work at it's maximum potential. If you purchase an after market coil, and it does not perform very well, you will never know if it's the coil or the metal detector, and the builder of the after market coil will not have the technical knowledge base to make a decent diagnosis of the problem. You will not be able to send both machine and coil for an assessment. Even if you did, the cost to ship and insure a detector/coil over seas would not even be worth the cost of the after market coil in the first place. Garrett or any other home manufacturer will also not repair, assess or honor the warranty on a detector with the after market coil. You will be stuck in limbo should problems arise.

What to do.....Email, phone or write Garrett metal detectors and put in a suggestion to manufacture a larger coil. If one can be built, they would surely build the BEST and you would have a warranty for both the coil and detector, and they could be sent in at a reasonable rate for repair should there be a failure. http://www.garrett.com/contact.htm

Dear John,
As i put in my posts. I'm looking for a great "1-2 punch" i will not give up on garrets. I am simply looking for something that will go deep for maybe cache or awesome relic hunting, or a very deep coin in the middle of nowhere. i think your post is a little biased. I have done a lot of research and found this dealer and brand of very high standards. Including a 3 year warranty when garretts only has a 2 year warranty. It just isn't well known by the Americans too well. I find it hard to believe that a company knows everything about their detectors. and if they do, they may not produce the best detector because guess what? they are making the same detector for the next 20 years till something better comes. resulting in lower sales in the future. I am willing to give it a shot. there are many american companies products that have been highly enhanced due to foreign attributes. Actually i think the DD coil in general was developed overseas. I may be wrong about that, but it would be interesting to find out. Thanks again for your insight, John,
Les
