Best hunt in 2010! Triple Gold!!! Silver!! (Plus, sadly, yet another cop encounter.) (LONG)

What a day! It's Saturday so, as usual, up early, out early. Back to the spot that has given up gold two of the last three times I've been there. It was 78 degrees at 6 am (hot for this time of year) and when I got there and my back wasn't feeling too spiffy after my 45 minute drive. Here's everything:

The twisty mess of silver in the photo is an earring that is interesting because I found it's mate about a month ago at that site. How'd I miss this one , I wonder?

Onto the good stuff. About 45 minutes in I got a nickel signal, but size C. I know this is a pop top 99.98% of the time. Here's what it was:

14K yellow gold. 12 grams. A super nice find and my first ever gold religious item. I was super psyched!!!!

Three or four steps from that find I got nickel signal but size C. Now if you remember from about two sentences ago, this is a pop top much of the time. Let's call it 99.93% now, OK? Anyway this time it was:

18K yellow gold this time. 6 grams. A second super nice find in about two minutes. I was super-duper psyched!!!

Now I really wanted to look at my necklaces so I decided to go back to my truck for a rest, detecting along the way, of course. Last find before I shut off the old GTI 2500 was:

The ring. 10K yellow gold. 2.5 grams. I pinched myself. Must be dreaming. So I had a little break, counted up what I had found, and wondered if I should keep at it. 58 coins and three gold items in about 90 minutes. I was surely pressing my luck, and figured I was due to be struck by lightning after finding three gold items in no more than 15 minutes. I decided to risk it. The anchor crucifix came shortly after my break and is 925 silver. Then the earring up in photo 1. Maybe about 40 more coins. I was about to wrap it up when I saw the police car driving across the grass.

I'm going to make this as brief as possible. When I saw that the cop wanted my attention, I walked over and said hello. He asked if I had permission to be there, I did, and told him so. He asked my name. I gave it. He asked what I had found. I responded mostly lunch money. He asked if I was a local. I said no. He asked where I lived. I told him. He said something like why would you drive 40 miles to find lunch money? I answered that there is always the possibility that I might find something better. He asked my name again. I told him, and this time he wrote it down. I was getting a very bad vibe, and asked if there was a problem. He asked me for my ID. I obliged and he checked me out on his computer as I looked on. Came up clean as expected. He then asked me what I was really doing there. I responded I'm metal detecting. He said there was a piece of the story missing and that he thought I was being evasive. I replied that I had told him nothing but the truth and that if he was through with me I was going to move along. He was still in his vehicle and never did get out. He then asked if would object to being searched. I thought about how to respond for a very long time and he told me not to think too hard and to answer the question. My answer was something like, I have been very cooperative with you, answered your questions fully and honestly, I have not violated any laws, I am getting very uncomfortable with this line of questioning, and that, NO I will not submit to a search. I then asked him if he minded if I asked him a question and he said go ahead. I asked if he had ever read the US Constitution and if he was familiar with the fourth amendment. He didn't respond. It ended for the first time at this point. He told me to have a nice day. I asked if I could stay, and he said do whatever you like. I told him I was just going to leave. I walked back to my truck and emptied my pockets of change on the tailgate. He pulled up beside me. Got out this time. Came over. Looked at the pile I was picking through. The gold was not on display. He remarked that that was a lot of change. We chatted for a bit and I eventually showed him the silver items because he actually did seem interested. He said well at least you paid for your gas. (And then some, I thought.) He asked me again what I was really doing there. I looked at him and said something like, I understand that as a police officer you deal with a lot of bad people who tell you nothing but lies. I then told him that I am not one of those people. He then asked me why I was leaving. I did my very best to be polite. I told him that our little encounter was as good a reason as any to leave. I said I will be stopping in (name of town) to detect some more and that I would appreciate it if he would call ahead and tell the police there to look out for me. I laughed and he actually cracked a smile. He finally let me off the hook just a little. He said if you knew the kind of crime that goes on here you'd understand why I was so thorough. I told him I appreciated his service. I then asked him what was I doing here today. He said you were looking for lunch money. I actually touched his shoulder as I laughed and replied good answer. We shook hands. I thought he was going to follow me out of town but he went directly back to the station.

Stopped and found 30-40 coins at the next site. Back gave out. Drove home.

Nobody is still reading, I'm sure. I felt bad about that encounter. That kind of nonsense should NOT happen in America. The actual encounter was probably 10-15 minutes. There were more questions all answered honestly. Cop was polite but condescending 90% of the time. Most of the time I was trying to think about all the great loot I was going to leave with.

Anybody know what this thing is? I find them all over the place. The quarter is for size comparison.

Back feels like crap. $500 (around .4 ounces) in gold is helping a whole lot!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll have you know that I did read the whole thing. Good job with the finds and also with the LEO. I think that they are trained to intimidate anyone they talk to from the get go. I've only found three pieces of gold all summer, so I'm impressed with your day. Havent found a decent piece of jewelry in weeks. Where did all the clumsy people go?

MrGee

Was this public, or private property?
If detecting was prohibited, and this was public property, it should have been posted.
If it was private property, WTH was the cop doing there in the first place?

Great finds Chris and I did read the whole story
You are a cop magnet
For this incident to happen rite after you found the gold is strange
This should not happen
If he asks what you're doing-you answer-it should be done
But we don't know his mindset
Hope your back feels better real soon
Good Luck

You know, he told me nobody called it in that he just stoppped to see what I was up to. It was public property and I did have permission to be there. From the groundskeepers. Wether or not they were the guys to ask is a bit of a question.

Chris

I keep a detailed detecting log. Never totaled up the number of times I've been stoppped. Only been asked to leave three times and two of those sites invited me back. I have been on exactly 499 hunts (one from a milestone!) and I figure I've been approached by the fuzz about 10-12 times. Sometimes it's just to see what I've found. I guess I should plan on being harrassed (how it feels to me) about once in every 50 hunts. Way ahead of the norm this year, though. At least my gold totals are way up all of a sudden!!!

Chris

I hang out with many cops. Even a couple guys I would call close friends have the attitude that anybody who is not in law enforcement is the enemy.

The best cop I know is a real boyscout. Doesn't speed, or drink and drive, doesn't talk on his cell while driving, like too many cops do. He obeys the law. Always. How novel! I really admire him and make it a point to let him know that.

Chris

Chris,
Congratulations on the gold and silver finds...great finds all!
Re the cop....sounds as if you handled the situation very well....it's diffucult to say why he was the way he was. Knowing the area where you were detecting could have something to do with it. I dont know who frequents the park at different times (particularly at night), but if it is in an area where lots of break and enters take place, it's possible that part of that park is used as a divvy up (divide the loot) place. If so, then it could be claimed by perpetrators of crime that the proceeds of the crime was lost in that park (or some other similar claim)...seeing someone with a detector would make any good cop suspicious of the above was the case, ie. he had been told by a perp. that the was a connection between the park and stolen property. (In the cops eyes) the guy with the detector might be in on the deal and looking for the stolen loot (particularly if the criminal guy told the cop he had buried the stuff in the park (whether he had or not). So, it is possible the cop had good reason to ask you all the questions he did, and when he saw the clad that you had found, he was satisfied that you were indeed there for the purpose that you said you were..i.e. to find "lunch money". All this is supposition of course, but I thought I would add these thoughts to the mix (if you've got this far):)

Hope the back is feeling better soon, the gold and silver always help and make it possible to justify why we do this to ourselves.

All the best, and good hunting,

there seems to be a LOT of activity at that site. Drug activity??? Was it in a bad area?? Since you didn't tell him of your gold finds you might have been acting a little evasive in your body language. Hell who knows. He had your personal info and vehicle info and should have left it at that. Either he was very thorough or bored. If you can, cultivate some relationships with cops from your home town and refer all future encounters to talk to them.
Nice finds by the way. HH. Bob.

Chris

Wow what an experience. I got some of that crap while dredging this year and pulled out the ole 1872 mining law and they promptly shut up. Sorry it had to happen to you but on the other hand if crime is that bad, then the cops are a bit jaded I'm sure, and the good folks get a little pissed about being questioned but in the long run they probally catch some real bad slime balls while doing what they do.

For the goods guys like you its just a pain in the arse, and we have to deal with it unfortunatly because of some bad apples ruin it for the normal folks.

NICE GOLD BY THE WAY!!!!!!!! :garrett: Good pay day!!

Alan

Almost a half ounce of gold in one day makes that encounter a tiny bump in the road.

Chris

Thanks for the nice compliment, Ron.

I had my "get out of jail free" card in my wallet and never came close to pulling it out. As for me being evasive? Perhaps. I never tell anybody when I have something good in my pocket. "What have you found?" "Mostly lunch money." 90 coins, three pieces of jewelry. Mostly lunch money. My body language? When he asked about searching me, what I would have considered an illegal search, I was more than a little annoyed. I'm sure my body language showed this.

There was much more to our chat. He told me nobody called me in. That he spotted me and had never seen anybody detecting there so he invetigated. (PS That's why I love the place.) The groundskeeper and I had waved to each other earlier. There was a sports team practicing a ways off many of whom came over to say hello. The place is loaded with cameras because it is remote and a lot of kids to hang out there and cause mischief. It is not a crime hotbed. I did thank him for his service as a cop. I understood he was doing his job.

Final thought. Dirty clothes, digging tool, knee pads, metal detector, walking a grid, occasionally retrieving an item. PROBABLY NOT A DRUG DEALER.

Chris

Made it all the way!

I had the real mother of all bad cop encounters two years ago. It's back in the archives some place. Sept 2008. This one wasn't all that bad. Lasted a bit too long from my point of view. That said, nobody feels good having their record checked and being asked to explain their very legal actions. I have to guess he was watching me for awhile too. Wouldn't have taken Colombo to figure out what I was doing there. I was happy to answer all of his questions, BTW. Once.

Chris

That was my only three gold day ever! If I had wated to post I might have written than and said this about that other stuff:

Had one of my patented uncomfortable police encounters. (Much better.)

Chris

Shux and Golly Chris. Sounds like a real horror story ! But congrats on your great finds. That helps to make up for it. I've never been approached by anyone at all other than curiosity seekers, much less a cop but then again I've only been at it for about 6 weeks. Guess I know what to expect down the road at some point in time.

I don't know why it happens to me so much. There have been some great cop encounters too. Looking for murder weapon. Showing deputy how to work his Garrett CSI. Cops just stopping by to see my loot or if I'm safe when in a dangerous area.

It will probably happen to you someday. Hope you have some gold in your pocket when it does.

The gold finds are the story. 5.25 hours away from home and over $525 in loot. 100 bucks an hour! Not too shabby.
