What a day! It's Saturday so, as usual, up early, out early. Back to the spot that has given up gold two of the last three times I've been there. It was 78 degrees at 6 am (hot for this time of year) and when I got there and my back wasn't feeling too spiffy after my 45 minute drive. Here's everything:

The twisty mess of silver in the photo is an earring that is interesting because I found it's mate about a month ago at that site. How'd I miss this one , I wonder?
Onto the good stuff. About 45 minutes in I got a nickel signal, but size C. I know this is a pop top 99.98% of the time. Here's what it was:

14K yellow gold. 12 grams. A super nice find and my first ever gold religious item. I was super psyched!!!!
Three or four steps from that find I got nickel signal but size C. Now if you remember from about two sentences ago, this is a pop top much of the time. Let's call it 99.93% now, OK? Anyway this time it was:

18K yellow gold this time. 6 grams. A second super nice find in about two minutes. I was super-duper psyched!!!
Now I really wanted to look at my necklaces so I decided to go back to my truck for a rest, detecting along the way, of course. Last find before I shut off the old GTI 2500 was:
The ring. 10K yellow gold. 2.5 grams. I pinched myself. Must be dreaming. So I had a little break, counted up what I had found, and wondered if I should keep at it. 58 coins and three gold items in about 90 minutes. I was surely pressing my luck, and figured I was due to be struck by lightning after finding three gold items in no more than 15 minutes. I decided to risk it. The anchor crucifix came shortly after my break and is 925 silver. Then the earring up in photo 1. Maybe about 40 more coins. I was about to wrap it up when I saw the police car driving across the grass.
I'm going to make this as brief as possible. When I saw that the cop wanted my attention, I walked over and said hello. He asked if I had permission to be there, I did, and told him so. He asked my name. I gave it. He asked what I had found. I responded mostly lunch money. He asked if I was a local. I said no. He asked where I lived. I told him. He said something like why would you drive 40 miles to find lunch money? I answered that there is always the possibility that I might find something better. He asked my name again. I told him, and this time he wrote it down. I was getting a very bad vibe, and asked if there was a problem. He asked me for my ID. I obliged and he checked me out on his computer as I looked on. Came up clean as expected. He then asked me what I was really doing there. I responded I'm metal detecting. He said there was a piece of the story missing and that he thought I was being evasive. I replied that I had told him nothing but the truth and that if he was through with me I was going to move along. He was still in his vehicle and never did get out. He then asked if would object to being searched. I thought about how to respond for a very long time and he told me not to think too hard and to answer the question. My answer was something like, I have been very cooperative with you, answered your questions fully and honestly, I have not violated any laws, I am getting very uncomfortable with this line of questioning, and that, NO I will not submit to a search. I then asked him if he minded if I asked him a question and he said go ahead. I asked if he had ever read the US Constitution and if he was familiar with the fourth amendment. He didn't respond. It ended for the first time at this point. He told me to have a nice day. I asked if I could stay, and he said do whatever you like. I told him I was just going to leave. I walked back to my truck and emptied my pockets of change on the tailgate. He pulled up beside me. Got out this time. Came over. Looked at the pile I was picking through. The gold was not on display. He remarked that that was a lot of change. We chatted for a bit and I eventually showed him the silver items because he actually did seem interested. He said well at least you paid for your gas. (And then some, I thought.) He asked me again what I was really doing there. I looked at him and said something like, I understand that as a police officer you deal with a lot of bad people who tell you nothing but lies. I then told him that I am not one of those people. He then asked me why I was leaving. I did my very best to be polite. I told him that our little encounter was as good a reason as any to leave. I said I will be stopping in (name of town) to detect some more and that I would appreciate it if he would call ahead and tell the police there to look out for me. I laughed and he actually cracked a smile. He finally let me off the hook just a little. He said if you knew the kind of crime that goes on here you'd understand why I was so thorough. I told him I appreciated his service. I then asked him what was I doing here today. He said you were looking for lunch money. I actually touched his shoulder as I laughed and replied good answer. We shook hands. I thought he was going to follow me out of town but he went directly back to the station.
Stopped and found 30-40 coins at the next site. Back gave out. Drove home.
Nobody is still reading, I'm sure. I felt bad about that encounter. That kind of nonsense should NOT happen in America. The actual encounter was probably 10-15 minutes. There were more questions all answered honestly. Cop was polite but condescending 90% of the time. Most of the time I was trying to think about all the great loot I was going to leave with.
Anybody know what this thing is? I find them all over the place. The quarter is for size comparison.
