Beep & Dig... Or. " Utilize The new technology"

If you get a pulltab reading on your targer ID detector, do you pass, or do you dig? You just might be surprised by digging a pulltab or zinc penny signal indication I've found some relly neat things in that target zone. Location is the Key. I use both kinds of detectors, Target ID for nice victorian yards and non metered for relic hunting with a sharpshooter as a digger, just the right tools for the right job at hand. JMTZ's

My TID detectors don't have all the bells and whistles of the newest, top end detectors so I can't comment on those. However, I enjoy both the TID machines and my beep and dig machines and have made many good finds with either. I tend to rely on the tone first with either type, but like the extra information from the TID s, especially when debating whether to dig or not in the more pristine, grassy areas. Fortunately it's not a right or wrong decision as one can enjoy detecting with either type of detector.

I liked the part about the pristine lawns. I never really thought about that. I would guess a tab, ring ,nickel would be really tough with either kind? Beep and dig or ID. I started with ID only and could not understand why anyone would not want to know what it might be or how deep it is. But with a beep and dig you still can find out the same type of information, depending what beep and dig machine you run. Most all of this information is on the beep and digs,ok it won't tell you how ferrous the object is.. But it will tell you depth, aprox size, and aprox conductive it is, and you don't get a sore neck from staring at a screen all day.

So really they are really almost the same barring the really high end machines(e-trac) which I would love to have. iMHO

I am a weekender type hunter, the 10 rings I have found just this summer is why I just keep digging, digging

Their is such a huge range of quality in dig and beep detectors, from radio shack to the Tesoro compadre, to the Golden umax with tone ID's. The ultimate machine for me would be a golden umax with ground balance, but that's another topic.lol

The reason I like the new technology is I have 3-4 detectors in one. I still use my Ace as a beep-dig machine-BUT if I come across trashy sites I can (1) use tone id OR (2) go to notch, AND (3) ADD foil if I feel I still want to have a chance at rings. I can also use a/m mode and ignore the iron tones BUT if they sound different I can still inspect them or in a tot lot find tiny earrings and other small gold by inspecting the iron tones always. And. in rare cases, I can set it to only find ONE certain target area. THEN, if I find a good area-I always go to my ever-faithful, analog Compadre.:drinking:

The tab/nickel/ small gold is difficult on either type of machine in my experience. However, I've gotten to the point with my beep and dig machines that I can ID coins by thumbing the disc and listening closely, with nearly as much accuracy as the tid displays do. It just takes a touch longer. It did take me a good number of user hours to get to this point. As often posted - "knowing your machine well " improves your success considerably although we all know that sometimes luck plays a major part in passing the coil over that sweet target.

Used single tone machines for 25+ years. But nowadays, there is so much garbage in the ground that multi-tone is almost mandatory. Low disc and single tone these days is an excercise in frustration. Unless one wishes to detect at a snails pace with eyes glued to ID numbers on the display.

Barber,

You are dead on right! I kinda gave up thumbing and decided to just dig more.. So far it's paying off.

I've been lucky enough to own many detectors including both beep and dig and also the latest technology machines.I've had good success with both types of machine but the majority of my best finds have come using the good old beep and dig machines.I put this down to the fact that i enjoy using this type of machine more than any other and not because they are better than anything else.I think if you find a machine that you really enjoy using, you tend to put more effort into your searching and this leads to a greater finds rate.My current machines are basic and certainly not the fastest or deepest machines you can buy but i enjoy them....they give me great pleasure when i use them,i get some nice finds with them and i'm happy.

If you don't want to miss something that might be good, you almost have to dig anything above iron no matter what detector you use. Even iron signals could be keepers. I personally, at least at the beginning of a hunt...lol, dig everything above iron using my Etrac like a beep and dig machine, but use the modern technology, ie ID numbers, iron mask, smartscreen, etc, to help try to decide what the target will be. Dug plenty of keepers that I thought would be trash but were coins even though my numbers were off the expected range. JMHO.

My opion is this, if your strickly a coin hunter then the new machines are great. Will they find more then a beep and dig machine? Doubt it. But having a machine that can vid a coin helps.
But if you like hunting for more than coins I don't see how new detectors hold any advantage over a beep and dig machine. Also many times I have been givin permission to hunt an old house with the stipulation that I don't hunt it again. Another words a one time deal. So I hunt for everything above iron. Good thing too beacause I have found CW buttons and bullets in the yard.Hard to do if you only hunt coins or go by a vid.

Beep and Dig all the way.Have used bout everything after almost 20 years.Have used some very good ID units over the years, but keep going back to beep and dig..
My latest beep and dig is a BLISSTOOL made in bulgaria. My deepest one to date.
The areas I hunt, date as from the 1930's to the 1830's

I'm with you BR549 i'm running deep tech vista's and from Bulgaria as well and just like you said deep, very easy to tell junk from good, would not dream of ever parting with them!

The only reason I didn't buy the vista is after injuring my wrist earlier this year. I just can't use anything with a box mounted on the top of the rod.I had to switch all my tesoro's and put them on custom straight shafts.Made all the difference in the world. With the blisstool having the box under my fore arm allows me to hunt with it.
