Batteries And MXT:

Larry (IL)

Well-known member
First, I want to say I love my MXT. I've had it almost 3 yrs. Seems like it eats the batteries fast. Specially when I use the relic mode. Is this the "norm" for the MXT? It could be me, but when the battery power hits 10, seems like I get a lot of chatter, loose depth, etc. So, another set of fresh batteries go into the machine. It wouldn't pay to have the rechargables (Been there, done that)since after a few chargings, they don't hold a good charge. My husband (which I'm using his "log in" name here) has a DFX and he can drain the batteries way down and still have depth, etc. Any input would be helpful. Thanks.....Nancy

I'm using the energizer 2500ma NiMl rechargeables and I have no trouble with them. They start at 11v after a charge and last a long time. They recharge fine after 7 months. The Mxt regulates the voltage to 8v, the MXT is supposed to run at 8v. Rob

Thanks Rob. I've had the energizer bunny Nimi recharchables also. They lasted about a year with lots of use. But once they get so old, I found they didn't get as much voltage with charging. Mine would start off at 11 volts also. They seemed to do a lot better in playgrounds and not deep hunting. But with the MXT, I get chatter once the voltage is down to 10. ??????? Maybe I'm swinging it too fast. Oh well, thought maybe I wasn't the only one with this problem.

I too run the 2500 NiMh energiser batteries. No problems. Just keep them charged. If you let the sit drained they buils gas bubbels inside that ruin the bateries.

How do you know you are loosing depth? If you are hunting above 10v and then drop to 10v how can you tell you lost the depth? I seem to have chatter even at full voltage in coin and jewelry but pretty steady at 10v in relic. Rob

When I hear a coin and it sounds like it's deep, I can pick it out of the ground less than an inch. I know my battery power is nill. This happens all the time when the voltage is down to 10. I hunt in the relic mode also. But times I do use the coin/jewelry mode. And in both modes, it does lose depth with low voltage at 10. ???????

i would burry some coinsat measured depth and try it with full batteries and low batteries and see what you get. what coils are you using?

Nancy,

Does your charger have the ability to condition the batteries? I use the conditioner, and charge the batteries about 5 times before I ever take them in the field. About every six months, I will go through the same process. I don't have any problems with NiMH rechargeables using this method. I have also brought back batteries that wouldn't hold a good charge using this method as well. Also, I will charge my batteries on the first of the month too. They do loose their charge just sitting around.

I have a Accupower charged from Thomas Distributering. It charges the batteries with a + and - pulse as it charges which is supposed to condition as it charges. I just brought the 2500 everready Nimh's back to lift after they set for a few months. It took a few charges on the accupower to get them there but they are working. You should always charge NiMh's once a month regardless.

My wife uses our MXT the most and she has run it until it will shut down because of low batteries and never has a problem with it as far as depth or stability until about a minute before it shuts down. We use the individual Nickle hydride AA batteries I have in my extra Explorer pack when we need them and charge with a good charger.

Thank you everyone! I'll try all the tips. Maybe they weren't getting a "good" charge. I don't know much about electronics, but my husband does. Good tip on recharging etc. We stopped using the rechargables since they didn't hold a charge and didn't charge to full capacity. We would charge them a few times a month when hunting long hours in the summer. Thanks again, Nancy

Maha NiM rechargable batteries and charger are good I have had mine for a couple of years and they are stilkl going strong. You can get them at Thomas Distributing on the net> Gene says if you use them regularly 5 years service is not to much to expect.

I've been using the 2300 NiMH rechargeable batteries. They are 1.2 volts as apposed to 1.5 volts of your standard non-rechargeable alkaline batteries. Add up the 1.2's and you get 9.6 volts. The 1.5's add up to 12 volts. When I first put the recharged NiMH's in my MXT the battery check reads 10. A fresh set of alkalines will read 12. I was concerned about a lack of performance so I e-mailed Whites. I'm told by Todd Marshall that because of the MXT's voltage regulator the voltage used by the MXT is the same whether the battery check reads 11 or 9.
But it does seem to me that once my battery check hits 9, which takes a while, the remaining power drains pretty quickly. I have not noticed any lack of prformance using the rechargeable NiMH's. I never did keep track but I believe I've gone beyond the break even point for the cost of batteries and charger and am now saving money.

Which I am using--Was using 2200--I would get around 20 hrs. with those--So I expect better with these---Only did that once--I REcharge normally at the end of a hunt--that way they are always on top IF I go hunting often enough-DeathWind1

Hi Just wondering if anyone has experienced the same problem that I am having with the 14 inch excelerator coil.
I have had the coil for about 18 months and recently whenever i want to use it i get a lot of chatter more than ususal.
To the point that it is alsmost unuseable does anyone have any ideas

thanks in anticipation

Rick

Poss bad coil. Kellyco sells them. Jw? knows alot about them, you might call him @ kellyco. Maybe they can check it for you or the factory can. Also if you know someone with a MXT, M6, DFX check it on their machine. Good luck.

i just got my mxt yesterday. read an interesting line in the instructions, using headphones reduces battery drain. it's a long thread but i dont recall the question, are you using headphones?

Nancy,
I'm having a similar problem. I've been swinging an MXT for nearly 3 years as well. And I'm only getting 15-20 hours out of a set of batteries. However, my machine does something entirely different. Right at about the time my batts drop to 10, my machine gets considerably more quiet.(and I run my threshold high, and my sensitivity at max.....we have great soil around here) Like I've turned the Threshold down. I have no proof, but I get the feeling that I'm not getting the same depth as well. It's very similar to hunting dry ground vs. wet. The machine is simply quieter.
As is common to most machines, battery life is shortened when one doesn't use headphones, which leads me to a theory I'm toying with....... Maybe the particular brand of Phones, and/or volume controls has something to do with battery life??
Just a thought.
For now, I'm simply having to find more clad to pay the battery bill. :)
Regards,
Jules

The MXT should not know if the batteries are 12, 11, or 10v. The unit is running on 8v. Even with fresh batteries the voltage is regulated to 8v. Mine doesn't seem to be any quieter when it drops to 10v. Rob
