Banning of metal detecting

So apparently there are places that ban metal detecting maybe just me I can’t really think of good legitimate reasons why. I can understand some situations like a historical site that needs preservation or private property, a ball field that needs to be kept well groomed etc. But a general ban am I missing something? What possible good reasons am I missing? There are plenty of other things that are more harmful. If it’s leaving large holes everywhere then just fine an individual in specific cases when warranted
 
There's always one Dude that won't fill his holes... Some kid trips in it... And Karren Mommy Goes the township Committee and screams bloody murder... puts it on face book... starts a movement... then the State gets in on it... Blah Blah Blah..... insurance liability... protect the kids.... yadda yadda..... And when you chase it back to what started it all... The Dude digging zinc pennies didn't even live there... It's A Fallen World :heh:
 
Everything is about 🤑. The old way of splitting up half the property owner/finder would have left management out in the cold. Now, if they restrict it, they can earn management fees, royalties and much more. Wait for the excuse, only the archies can recover history the correct way, and make every find (history) available to the public. Welcome in our/my world. 🤢🤮
 
Mainly it is rooted 90% in ignorance and 10% in obstinance. When you get the opportunity to explain to people the benefits of aerating the soil and removing the trash the consistently stubborn types will still not relent and accept that their position against detecting is wrong. I used to think it was because they just don't want you to get something they can't get or that they feel it's not justified to take something you find in the first place but now I believe it's more just purely stupid jealous ego and the fact they can't admit their ideas are bogus.

My 3rd Ex-wife always said "People Are Stupid"... She also always said this while looking directly at me.... And of course... This did not include her... :laugh:
 
Never understood places like State parks that are adamant about Native American items (EX-arrow heads) lying on the surface are to be left undisturbed. "DO NOT TOUCH" and God forbid if you pick it up as if the original owner is coming back for it. Do understand "No Digging" on State property...but "surface finds"???? How does that policy benefit ANYONE?
 
Ok i can understand private property like a homesite alot more as people get funny about their personal, private stuff but im talking more like state or federal parks, beaches etc. even public areas, shopping mall property, fairgrounds etc where the rest of the public can access.
Ive seen people/kids picnicking, camping, shopping etc that trash the areas. Alot more of them then people metal detecting. Ive heard of it happening but can’t say that i always see tore up areas from someone metal detecting.
You think that if it was allowed all of a sudden hoards of new people are going to go out and buy metal detectors and tear everything up?
Or maybe just enforce a penalty for leaving big holes and that would keep most that are doing the hobby honest.
I think the banning of metal detecting has more to do with other things than leaving holes
 
Who in this generation (or the last few...) ever accused government of having common sense? I have been told that on federal land if you find a gold nugget you can keep it. But if you find a gold coin, it is an artifact (man made) and you have to leave it where or lays. Oddly, the officials have no problem, and actually encourage, picking up other man-made artifacts (i.e. anything which may be deemed trash, although perhaps not “old“ trash...). Unthinking adherence to rules imposed by a distant “authority” is not what our founding fathers envisioned for this country.

I see a lot of videos, people with shovels in parks, sports fields, an even tot lots. That could be one reason.

It’s becoming more common these bans. The onus is on the detectorists to know the laws & ordinances. Our state website makes clear what state controlled areas are a go or not. I’ve made it a point to check ordinances in 37+ years doing this. I loathe Shovels in parks, open holes, trash besides holes, iron trash left in plain sight in the wooded areas… one of my delicate permissions got banned due to others interloping and disrespecting the leasing farmer who I had an agreement with, know what new crops to watch for and aware when herbicide was laid down. Talking colonial stuff, reales, buttons, buckles and coppers. I saw others there and cautioned them about what would p’off the farmer. People trampling his winter rye thinking it wasn’t a crop probably had much to do with it. Since about 2002 I had a blast here. The farmer leases the land from the town. The town also stocks the area with foul for permit hunting. Just a beautiful place, peaceful, 1000+ acres of flat river farmland going back the 1600’s. Ethical detecting here is no more due to idiots with detectors. We even founds colonial coin spills on a couple hunts. Been waiting to let this out….

There are some that do not fill their holes. When you see an area that someone has done this, it is very unsightly. I think that the unfilled hole issue can many times be attributed to squirrels and other critters This is especially true of parks and any area that has a squirrel population.
