Balance

I used the D2 for the second time today. My forearm started getting very tired after 4 hours. The balance is just off for me. I'm planning on adding some lead inside tube right under the cuff.

I was wondering if others have done that?? How did it work??

What MD did you use before that had a better balance? Could be you need to build up to 4 hours.

Interesting thought. I haven’t been out much in the last few months but the last two times out my arm got tired. I might have chosen the wrong length for the shaft as I detected.

I usually use a Whites 3Vi. Much heavier but the balance point is also much closer to the hand grip. I have, and rarely use, a Whites MX Sport and the balance on it was also off.

When the balance is off, it causes extra effort to keep the nose up. The amount of time I spend detecting is usually 6-8 hrs. Not normally a problem.

I can only speak for the D1. I believe they are very close in size balance. I can swing the D1 all day without issue with the 9” hf coil. The 11” is definitely heavier and throws the balance a bit. I do have an offset mount for the 11” coil but I don’t feel it makes a great deal of difference.

I'm getting old and weak, I do feel it sometimes.
The main thing is to shorten the length of the shaft. The longer it is the worse it will be on you.
Just 4 years ago I was hunting with the CTX and 17 inch coil exclusively, (Which wasn't very smart) and I could hunt as long as I wanted.

I think part of my problem is the hand grip angle. It leans forward more than my other detector and it stretches the exact muscle which stated getting sore.

I have added about 10 oz inside of the cuff. I'll see how it works out.

I just bought the WS6 master version with 9 coil. I went out with it for the first time today and I came across another detectorists with the full D2 and 11 coil. I am 5 ft 9. This man was probably 6ft 3. He showed me that he was using one of the shoulder harnesses. It was the over the head and down one shoulder type. Anyhow, maybe try that. I think the length extended really does change things.

I used a Swingy Thing harness when I had CTX. It helped, but I disliked being attached to the detector. Even with it my previously injuried old shoulder was sore for days after a 3 hour hunt. It also made setting it down to retrieve targets more difficult. One more think to pack and unpack, put on and take off.

I sold the CTX and purchased a Deus 1 and now have Deus 2 also. I have no regrets. I am 6'2" and have my lower pulled out between the 2 1/2 and 3 mark on the lower shaft. It is not only the weight that puts stress on your arm and shoulder it is also reversing the inertia at the ends of each swing. The longer the shaft the more lever and inertia that has to overcome.

Excellent points, especially the one about the inertia reversing at the end of a PROPER AND LEVEL swing. Perhaps one of the reasons we’ve seen the big U-shaped swings where the coil comes way up at the end of the swing in the past is because of this. Anymore, swinging for long periods of time between targets, the INSIDE of my elbow tends to start to ache first, not the bony outside elbow. Even with the ultra lightweight XP’s it is possible to hurt yourself! And, I also went from the CTX to the D2…and…no regrets. The CTX is a fabulous machine, the D2 is just fabulous in its own way, performance and all.

I find the coil weight to be the biggest problem. Detector weight isn't a big deal as long as it's balanced. I've done the lead thing as you're going to try and it helps. (Different detectors) The only thing you can do about the inertia problem is to adjust your swing. Slowing the speed and not abruptly stop/starting at the end of your swing.

You can always take the control unit off the shaft. You can carry the the unit in the case around your neck or maybe they have and arm band case.
I think they also have an arm band for the puck.

When I relic in England, I only listen !!!! I never look at TID numbers. We swing from 6-8 hours a day !!!!

Once you remove the control unit, it will make a world of difference.

To be honest the design of the shaft on both deus machines is not very good, am working on a 2 piece, straight carbon shaft, this way the weight of the coil should pull the arm cup up into my arm without the need for an end weight in the shaft.

FWIW. I bought the new shaft from Steve's Shafts that he recently released. All I can say is that it is night and day superior to the stock shaft. It is stiffer and the ergonomics are superior with his arm cuff design. Zero wrist issues.

What wrist issues were you having? I haven't yet encountered any.
