Backup detector - do you have one? Whats your combo?

Who has a dedicated backup or secondary detector? What combo do you have?

I have a DFX and am thinking I would like to have a "beater" to always have in the trunk or to loan out to a friend. Or, to just have as a backup in the event my DFX goes on the blink.

I mainly go relic hunting in Georgia, coin hunting on the beach in Florida, and coin shooting in the local parks.

I am thinking about a Tesoro Vaquero but I heard it dosnt do as good on the beach.

I guess in "back up" machine..and you mentioned the Vaquero so your not wanting to spend more than 400.00 and not interested necessarily in an ID machine. Most machines have a hard time around wet sand...that includes the 250. The used Fisher CZ series detector just might be what your after.
I haven't used the Vaquero but I have owned 4 Tesoros(Compadre, Conquistador, Tejon & Stingray II)...still have the last three. They all react the same way in wet salt sand...they WILL chatter a bit, BUT not constantly. Once you learn that a good signal and a chatter signal sound TOTALLY different and IF a signal does fool ya...it will not be repeatable.

the beach may not be the best place. I'd recommend the T2 but it would be overwhelming to a casual user but would be a great backup for you.

Maybe a used Sovereign of some kind of an X-Terra...???

- - is a Tesoro Silver Sabre uMax or Golden uMax. Any of the related models would work, as well, and can be had on ebay or the classifieds for easy money. A Vaquero would work, but they are different instruments, not the least of which is the manual GB. Also, they cost an awful lot to call a "beater."

I also keep an ACE 250 handy, most of the time, so that would do.
Some of the Garrett Freedom series would serve, too.

Whites Classics always fill in well, in a pinch, too.

If you like Fishers, get your hands on a 1236X or 1266X

What's in my truck right now? A Vaquero, just because I was using it today. Im still looking for a 1236X for easy money, so if any one has one for sale, Id like to hear about it.

I am hunting for a back up unit. I am thinking that an M6 or ID Excel may be the ticket. I use a Vaquero, great machine.

My MXT, no wait it's my X-Terra 70, hold on, it's my CZ-3D, no....

I guess it depends on what, and where I'm hunting that determines which is the backup for that session. :D

They're all great!

Good hunting,
OldeTymer

I usually hunt with my newest detector for a several years. Since 1973 I've only owned seven detectors. Currently, I'm swinging a cz3d and my backup is my newest (old one) which is a Tesoro Golden Sabre(2).

I have a Compadre as my primary land machine and a Tiger Shark as a backup land and primary water machine. That's my arsenal and I hope to expand it soon.

..."Nuff said!" Everytime I hear it, I cringe! It's downright pretentious, bordering on boorish. There is always another opinion or idea and coming from someone as agreeable and well-versed as you JPS, Im surprised!
I take solace in the fact that I know you meant no harm in it, and were only expressing admiration for your chosen equipment.

My primary detector is an Explorer SE.
Secondary is a Fisher CZ5.
I also have a Sidewinder and a White's Eagle.

I got the SE a couple months back and love it. No problems with the weight and the learning curve wasn't nearly what it's purported to be. Don't dig much iron anymore. I primarily coinshoot so this is a plus. The Sidewinder is a great beach hunter and also nice to just keep in the car at all times. Always liked my CZ5 as well. Nice deep hunting machine.

being too early in the AM and not having enough caffeine in my system yet.

Heck A lot of guys have gone to it for their primary detector. It was almost totally ignored in the US until a couple yars ago when some experienced users started finding out just how good it really is. People mention "bang for the Buck" detetors all the time so maybe I shoulda used that one instead.

Well lets see here there are way to many choices. but here is what I use today.

Water
Surf, Salt Water / Garrett Infinium
Back-up Tesoro Tiger Shark
Back-up if I am not in the water Minelab Quattro
Fresh water / If trash is light / Garrett Infinium
Back-up or primary Tesoro Tiger Shark
I use to have a DetectorPro HH Diver and it is a great unit but it was not sensative enough for gold / chains and small studs.

Land
Minelab Quatro
Back-up Garrett GTAx550

I am always open to changinging up and buying a new machine if I can try it and I feel it works better. I do not have any brand loyalty.

90% of my hunting is in old lumbermill ghost towns and logging camps and the Advantage is my no.1 machine for this type hunting. The depth is excellent and it goes right thru these iron infested sites with ease. I have a CZ-70 Pro for the other 10%.

It's cool, Tom, that phrase just strikes me rough. Ditto for, "It's a no brainer..." That one rattle me, too, as I find it insulting.

Im glad you have a thick skin and didnt take my comments badly.

Bear in mind, bro, I have no quarrel with the Minelabs. Or any gear you choose to spend your $$$ on. The results speak for themselves. Some of it is taking them to the right places, of course, but good equipment will never steer you wrong. Ill probably never have one though, as Im too casual to worry if Ive missed something...Im certain, I have in fact. So - - -

I'll get it later
Or, maybe not
You'll get it
Or, maybe not.
Either way we die and leave it behind.
Act accordingly.

Tesoro Tejon with a 2nd. Tejon as backup. One has the standard coil the other has the 575 coil:tesoro:

it is that you never find it all and any of the better detectors regardless of make/model will find stuff that other detectors miss.
