Babbs Scoop?

SurfPro

New member
Greetings, I have the the following scoop: Heavy Duty "T" Beach Scoop with Stainless Steel Lip #6HDTBSS $159.95
It's a 2 piece shaft with 4 screws holding the pieces together. The problem that I'm having is that the screws ALWAYS come loose, and one of them is now stripped due to the constant tightening. I'm now using duct tape around the screws to keep them in place. If anyone has a fix for this outside of lock tight, I'd like to hear it.

Best,
SP

I have the same one and it happened to me on a regular basis so I bought 2 stainless steel screws with lock nuts, drilled though the other side, problem solved. The plate that is inside the shaft and is made of aluminum and is too soft to take the abuse. I bought mine in case I went to visit my brother in Florida, just remove one bolt and your on your way. Gulf hunter told me I would have a problem with the 2 peacer but By then the order was already placed but all worked out just great with the through bolts, I hope this helps you

Did you have to cut the bolts to not stick out past the nuts? If you could tell me the size, that'd be great.

I took the old bolt with me to the hardware store and matched it up along with the thread size . The nut will stick out the other side but as long as you get the kind of nuts that are rounded and are locking type you will be good to go. Measure the thickness of the pipe and the thickness of the nut and you will get the perfect size bolt.

I taped mine out to the next larger size, will hold for a while. However!!!:ranting: It broke my scoop in half yesterday. It is at a Mexican fab shop right now. I have no idea wat I am going to get back. It will need some work when I get home.

I'll hit the hardware store tomorrow, thanks.

Bummer, my Babbs scoop broke right at the weld where the crossbar comes into the shaft just above the bucket. I sent it back to Bill @ Proscoops and he welded a piece on there that should forever. He said that it was the first time that he's ever had one break at that particular spot. I had to do a little contouring on it when it came back, but he did a great job.

Babbs travel. SS tip........Got one of those, striped on my vacation...used duck tape to hold her together..got home put a helicoil in her..so far all is good. They should have put a SS insert instead of the one of soft aluminum. I was afraid to drill thur figured it may cause a weak spot since you put stress on the handle everytime you pull back.

Nice work Beechnut, I've never heard of a helicoil, would you please elaborate? I picked up the bolts recommended by Ratpack, haven't installed them yet.

Got mine back from the shop, he put a new insert in and put a bolt all the way through. One day out o far and it looks good. Only have about two days left here to detect, then it is home for me. I think I am going to look into putting an over collar on as well when I get a chance back at home. This might help with the stress point where it connects at.

Comes as a complete kit, Drill. Tap and the insert. You drill out the old threads, Twist the tap into the hole like a screw cutting new threads, and then twist in the new stainless steel insert. Install the new plug, put your bolts in, then I wrap it with duck tape so they won't come lose, and it gives me a place to grip..my scoop needs a handle to make the pickup easier.....Joe

Thanks Beechnut, I'll start looking for it.
