ATX Deep Seeker Package plus coil cover

Good report Joe...

BK

Hi Joe,

I haven't heard anything new about the deep seeker.....maybe BK has heard something new??

I'm glad you had some fun with it so far. Not sure I'd use a strap myself. I currently swing a 5 pound detector and
It feels pretty light so the extra pound and a half will probably be ok for me also.

Have you heard about the ground balance related trick that can gain you extra sensitivity?
If not let me no ... And I'll tell you about it.....

Glad to have you back online Joe!

Cheers,

Tye

Hi Tye I forgot to say the strap takes a bit of fiddling around to fit it to the shaft. I ended up getting some velcro strapping to put around the shaft, The instructions for the strap were next to useless. Once I figured it out it was pretty good but got annoyed with it when digging. I ended up on the 3rd day not using it but found my arm got tired after an hour or so. I ended up using it again. I think with the pro swing it would be much better. Looking forward to getting out again in a few days. Just waiting for it to cool down. It is 37 degrees here at the moment and 41 degrees tomorrow.
I haven't heard of the GB trick. Please let me know.
Many thanks
Joe

Hi Joe...

Yea...100+ degree weather would be a little too hot for me too...I'll do my reading when it's that hot!
Let me know how the Minelab harness works out....might want to use mine if it's good...

Ground Balancing :

The main idea: Ground balancing allows you null out the noise from ground responses but robs some of your sensitivity in doing so.
Use as little as you can with acceptable noise levels for greater sensitivity.

When you turn the ATX on it loads factory default ground balance settings into the detector.
When you first ground balance after turning on, it starts the balancing process from the factory defaults.
If your ground is fairly quiet...try running with factory setting and don't ground balance the detector.
If it's too noisy...try doing a partial ground balance and check to see if it's quiet enough. If not, do a little more balancing and recheck...etc.

I have seen this work amazingly well on a saltwater beach.
In mild to lighter mineralized ground how well it can work depends on the degree of mineralization.
If the ground is really hot .. You just have to do a full ground balance.

Hope this was clear enough to understand:wiggle:

Cheers Joe,

Tye

You guys have to just change your detecting / digging style a bit with the Garrett sling to get the best out of it. I am the main distributor of the Detecting Buddy Harness in Europe for my sins, they have become very popular over here to carry all weights of Detectors. Garrett took the original Buddy and slightly altered it and added their own name basically. No great design changes just some changes in the end elastic. They made a very wise move. Before the Buddy came out I always used a Docs swingy thingy on my Heavier minelab detectors. The bit I hated about Docs harness was the fact that you had to connect it someway to your belt or braces at the back, I love the way you can wear the new harness under a coat in bad weather for instance and the end strap just lays out the front over your coat zipper, so simple and effective.
I developed a style of digging for myself where I put a toe on the back of the coil so that the detector stays upright and by my side while I spread my legs and stoop rather than trying to kneel or unhook the detector whilst digging. The only time I would unhook and kneel maybe is If I was dealing with a particularly deep target. I find digging like this is a lot quicker and enables me to uncover the find and get onto the next target so much quicker. Digging in this way with your toe on the coil stops the problem that some people are finding of the detector flying away from you on the end of the bungee out of control. Its just all about getting used to a new toy.
I don't get many people asking about how it fits, its all self explanatory really. It fits over either arm depending on wether you are right or left handed. Left shoulder and around the back of the neck If your right handed and so on. This sling / harness is so simple and does the same job as the new Minelab offering at a fifth of the price. I have the older GPX body harness which I never use because I find it too uncomfortable to wear, especially when weather dictates that you have to wear a coat under it. For all detectors even the GPX 5000 I use the simple Detecting buddy its a no brainer. I took up selling them in Europe because they were the answer to my prayers, because Im getting older and the shape of my body goes with being over the hill this was gods answer, lol. For using on heavier detectors I make and sell an accessory pack that gives two extra end pieces made with a slightly stronger elastic and a metal dog clip instead of the standard plastic one. This Isn't really really necessary but i find people like to have spares because they can leave thds attached to their spare detectors ready to use.
Sorry for the long essay guys but i would just like to add the best way I have found to attach the bungee to your detector. Obviously it needs to be central for sideways balance, On my Minelabs or any detector I use I always attach just below the control box on the handle stem above where my hand would grip the handle. I do this by simply threading a strongish plastic cable tie/ zipper through something like a plastic or even metal curtain ring or something similar and pulling it tight. Have the dog clip part of the bungee that way round and simply clip it on.
Hope this all helps, You guys will have to decipher my English language into Americanised words If I have given things a different name, Happy Hunting to you all.

Have to agree with Detectorbits above. I made my own bungee harness and I'll admit, it sucked but it worked. Got one of these Detecting Buddy Harness and it was simply a breeze to put on, clip to the detector, I use a 3030, and hunt for hours without any fatigue that I used to have. Not sure who sells them in the states, but I got mine from the UK and it was shipped for about the same price as local delivery. It's a great accessory for any detector.

Hey Jim, glad you're liking the bungee I sent you matey. I just like to point out Jim I only supply the Buddy in Europe,I sent yours as a favour to a mate. Thats my deal with Extreme detecting the manufacturers who supply everybody in the states who want them. Just needed to point that out. Anybody our side of the pond want one then just contact me. I must say also that its probably been our best seller over here out of all the products we handle.

Thanks Tye and Detectorbits for the info.
I will give the GB a try out this weekend.
The Garrett bungee strap I will also try out again this weekend. I found that if I put the attachment around the handle, where it meets the shaft that the strap was too long. Even with the adjustments as short as they would go. I ended up using velcro around the bottom of the the top most stem lock. Granted I am not the biggest guy in the world but couldn't get it to work any other way. I think I will also need to build up the muscles in my left arm or swing with the left and use the right for digging. It is certainly a learning curve. Maybe I just need to practice more :detecting:

Joemac you should be able to shorten the strap for a little guy. On the minelab machines I usually fix a loop as centrally as I can. On the CTX Minelab left a connection point for a Bungee on either side of the control box stem, to my mind thats the wrong place because when you attach a bungee it tends to pull the machine over to that side your attached to. You have obviously tried to adjust the main strap at the buckle. I havent seen one of the Garrett versions yet but I imagine that they have the same adjusting buckle as the original Detecting Buddy. Other options I have used on bungees is obviously to shorten your detector stem to suit you and the bungee length and I have even put some simple knots in the elastic that will shorten things also. If your right handed and normally swing with that arm then stay with that one because you will find it very awkward suddenly trying to swing with the other arm, lol.
I just had a silly thought Joe. You are attaching your bungee over your left arm and up to your shoulder aren't you then laying the main strap around your neck so that the end piece hangs down your right chest ready to attach to your detector. I have had a few people ask me the correct way to wear the bungee's so I'm just checking that you have sussed it out correctly. That thing worn correctly should fit anybody. Happy Hunting

Hi Detectorbits.
Thanks for the info. I will be using the ATX this weekend and will try out some of your advice. Yes I am using the the sling right. Even watched the video I think I am happy the way I have it now. Using the velcro seems to work well with no metal fixings. I think I just need to practice more :detecting:

Thanks for you advice
Joe

Just a little note on the bungee strap supplied by Garrett. I like it and it worked fairly well. I adjusted it so that most of the weight was on the bungee. After hours of swinging though it becomes a bit of a pain in the neck where the strap goes behind the back of the neck. Not too bad, just saying...The main problem I had was when digging deeper targets I needed to disconnect the strap from the ATX and set it down so I could dig. While digging the strap kept falling off my arm/shoulder so I needed to pick it back up each time to put it back on. Not a big deal, but I also wear a backpack to bring along my extras and the steps from the back pack get tangled with the sling. My backpack fittings turned out to be the same as the sling, so I removed one of the extra straps from the backpack and attached it to the backpack chest strap and adjusted it to fit the lower sling loop that attaches to the ATX pole. It worked! And the weight is now transferred to the backpack shoulder straps instead of my neck! I just leave the pack back on and disconnect the loop attachment to dig targets now. For others wearing backpacks you might want to try it.....jim

Hi Jim
Glad to hear someone else was having the same problem with the strap falling off. I thought it was just me. Good idea with the backpack, Cheers Joe

Garrett told me yesterday they still have not started shipping the Deep Seeker Pack yet and did to give me specifics when it will start. All I know it is supposed to be in late Jan sometime, but that could change of course.

It'll come with practice Joe. If I don't wear my Bungee harness these days I feel naked. Its the best detecting invention ever as far as I'm concerned. Can't understand how some say they are still having problems with it falling off their shoulder. First time I wore one that happened then I developed a style of detecting by putting a toe on the back of my coil while I dig and the whole thing just stands there. Unless the hole you are digging is exceptionally deep theres no need to kneel or detach the detector from the sling just stoop and bend at the waist.

I love the cover that came with the Deepseeker package.
I was out again this weekend, no gold unfortunately but great to be out in the bush. I find the solid coil cover great for bush and sand. I just glides over the top and makes it easy to use. Also takes some of the weight. OK every now and again you have to tip some leaves and grit out of the cover but I would prefer to be doing this rather than getting snagged or caught up in the scrub. I'm sure everyone will have their own preferences. I agree it would be useless in the water and I do hope Garrett make another one with the cut outs.
I also gave the 20" coil a go. I didn't want to do too much work with this as I still don't have a cover. First thought was "It's bloody heavy". After 15 minutes of swinging I changed back to the 12". Changing from one coil to another is a bit fiddly but once I got the hang of it, it's easy and vey quick. I do have skinny fingers and I could see some not so skinny fingered people having problems.
I did persevere with the bungee strap and I am starting to like it a bit more, as with everything practice and practice some more makes life easier.
I did find a lot of lead shot and really hair fine wire out in the bush some were 6 inches or more deep. I also took the AT Gold with me and the ground reading was 81 fairly hot. The ATX was whisper quiet and had to test it a few times to make sure it was still working. It also started to rain whilst detecting, just as I hit a target. No need to worry thought the ATX is water proof and so is my skin
I'm really, really happy with the ATX. The turn on and almost go is just fantastic.

Thanks for the nice update Joe. I'm glad you are so happy with it. I'm sure I will be too. Once I get it!

Cheers

Jerry

Hi Jerry
Just getting used to the layout and weight. Feeling muscles that I forgot I had but that's a good thing.
I changed the non rechargable batteries after 12 hours. The low battery alarm certainly works. I am just looking on ebay now to get another set of 8 rechargeable batteries.
Any idea when yours will arrive?
Cheers
Joe

Hi Joe,

Thanks for sharing more details. The battery life is not bad, but of course I'm gonna use NiMh rechargeables, same as you. Plenty of them on ebay. Quite good quality, high capacity 3000 mAh and dirt cheap, that is compared to our local shops.
You can buy them in bigger packs so you might go for 16 to always have a spare set. Always make sure you have them FULLY charged before you depart hunting. Although they are very strong, they don't hold full charge for too long when not used.
It is very important to always remember that!

My DS pack will be hopefully send out to me at the end of Jan. Still a long wait.

Cheers

Jerry

I sympathise with your wait Jerry. I couldn't get enough info whilst I was waiting for mine to arrive. I kept pestering the supplier. You probably have the Christmas holiday's and rush to contend with too. Start building up those muscles too
