At Pro question.. Why ??

Does the At pro love Screwcaps so much. (#75-79) , and old pultabs (#80- 81) that read and sound off with high tones??

I was wondering the same thing. Sometimes I am positive that I am detecting a bottlecap and I am able to not dig it. Sometimes though, the sound is beautiful...I could swear it's a coin of some sort...then I pop out a bottlecap. I'm hoping more practice will help.

I found out that depending on what the cap is made of and how rusted it is, will change the sound. I can tell if it's old and rusty, but the fresh dropped ones do sound like a coin, depending on what it is made of. Gene

[size=large]my money is on the frequency. the mxt has the same problems as the at pro. they both run at or near 15 Khz. it may be the field that freq. sets up around caps. the lower freq. don't seem to love caps as much. they may set up differant fields. just my thoughts.

Might well be the frequency, as my F75 LTD also LOVES them.....DD coil also.

BUT the AT Pro also LOVES SILVER & GOLD :detecting:

I think it is more of an issue with the DD coil. I bought the 10X14 inch DD coil for my Grand Master Hunter a few years ago and it just loved bottle caps. Had no problem going over the same coil with the 7X10 concentric coil. The GMH detector runs at 6.5 Khz which is less than half of the At Pro or Mxt but the results with DD coils are similar.

Most all detectors will give you a nice coin sound or VDI on a screwcap, not specific to the ATP. I find that a deep ringtab(over 2") will sound like a coin sometimes, especially if it's tail has been bent around to cover the ring hole. And again not specific to the ATP.

Why do beverage companies have temporary metal seals (screw caps) on their products which share the same conductivity as coins? I think engineers have a real challenge with this. The simple answer is to use the right coil, either DD or concentric, which will give you the best results for the types of hunts you do. Every DD coil which I have ever used has a stronger attraction to bottle caps then concentric coils.

Old beaver tail pull tabs give the same nice strong sound as a nice 10-14K medium sized ring. The Scorpion has the same scenario. To me....that's a tweak in the right direction. If you were to hunt gold rings, you would find that a real asset. However, you can still notch out those numbers if you have different hunting expectations, and give up hundreds of pull tabs and a possible gold ring for the comfort of hunting old relics, coins both copper/silver and other items not sharing the same conductivity as pull tabs......

since I got the head phone adapter(thanks Chuck) and use my own head phones, I know when they are under the coil, they make a distinct sound, it is different than with the Garretts head phone, I like their head phones but the cord was to short

Screwcaps, being so large and of recent vintage, tend to give themselves away. They hit reliably in the same range and are almost always shallow, both good tip offs. The rings that fall into the same range, on the other hand, tend to fade sooner than the screwcap as you raise the coil.
AS for pulltabs, it strikes me as odd that any of them would hit in the coin range - I've yet to see one that does. Invariably, they land somewhere between nickle and screwcap. I'd like to see pics of one.

I have found that multiple passes and a pinpoint action then more passes at varying speeds will give them away.
I know you can usually dig em up faster but it saves getting down.

I have that problem with every machine that I have a DD coil on. The Ace 350 is a cap magnet, as well as the 250 with the 10x14 excelerator coil. The AT does the same thing... I can tell the steel caps most of the time, using iron audio. The aluminum screw caps trick me EVERY time though. In my soil, they ring up exactly the same as a quarter. I'd sure love to figure out a way to differentiate between quarters and caps.

Here is my problem: I get a signal that sounds pretty good, but grunts slightly and makes me believe it MIGHT be a bottlecap. Then I think maybe it's a silver quarter with a small nail on top of it...after all, the signal sounds pretty good. To dig or not to dig!! It's melting my brain trying to figure it out....in any case I choose to dig!

Go to a concentric coil instead of a DD configuration.

One of the draw backs of using a DD type coil for everything, is it's problems in discrimination, especially with rusty caps, pull tabs. It won't make it all go away, but it sure will make easier to live with.

After I read your post and all the comments, I couldn't figure out why everyone was responding about bottlecaps, you plainly said "screwcaps".
