AT PRO / OR / AT GOLD

Bart...

Just wanted to say a very big thank you for taking the time to help me this morning on the phone with regards to my upcoming AT Gold or Infinium LS purchase... Also I just got off the phone with my brother Pat who just talked to you also with regards to purchasing a Minelab GPX5000 and he was really impressed with all you had to share...

Thanks again... You will positively have my purchase as it's a no-brainer... Now it's just between the Infinium LS and the AT Gold... Also considering all the guys I've read here, some of which have stated they have owned up to 50 detectors, I did conclude I could do the AT Gold now, and do an Infinium LS down the road as I really do want that beach\ocean salt option... I must research more on the Infinium LS and dang this is not as easy as I thought it would be... Both the Infinium and AT Gold have lots going for them... Kind of comes down to strong points and weak points... Everyone wants the best their dollar can buy...

I think that the Pro will serve you well. It runs on the same frequency as the Garrett Scorpion using the ground hog circuitry. Also, it can be programmed to your own liking. Both machines are very hot using the 5 x 8 coil. The AT Gold gets more depth in the true all metal mode which the AT pro does not have.. It is extremely sensitive to tiny targets, especially when using the 5 x 8 coil. If depth and sensitivity are a priority to you, and you don't mind digging most whispers in the audio as if you were searching for tiny flakes of gold, the AT Gold might be the better option.

Disc 1 on the AT Gold is very similar to zero discrimination (in pro mode) on the AT pro

My ATP must be a hot one? I get more than 13 inches on various gold rings and flat pieces of lead with the 11 DD coil.

Haha someone beat me to my first post which was to ask which one to go with as my first machine next year. I don't plan to do any prospecting, but if it's better at finding gold than the AT Pro I might consider it. I plan on using it mostly at old house sites, parks, playground, and when I can find the time around swimming spots around the lakes here in Canada. I asked a dealer on the performance on the Gold on Canadian Clad and he told me that it should do better than the AT Pro because of the higher freq. I asked around on another forum which doesn't seem to have any Gold users and one mentioned that he heard the AT Gold doesn't have as good as depth as the Pro does. What are your opinions?

Something to consider...My ATP is clearly hotter on gold range targets than on silver-coins/jewelry. The ATG might be even less so because of the higher frequency? For an all-rounder I think the ATP is the way to go. Especially if one might ever use it on salt beaches. For gold prospecting or micro gold jewelry hunting, I would think the ATG is better. I'm waiting for Garrett to come out with the ATB (AT Beach) version- one that works great in salt water and with optional blunt-nose 14 inch DD coil! If Garrett did that, I do not think they could produce them quick enough! The ATG is great for prospecting, but I would think there are far more beach hunters worldwide than prospectors?

Yeah I'm pretty set on getting an AT Pro Int, seems like the best bang for the buck and you guys have great luck with it. Glad I found these forums :) Can't wait to buy one next year and break her in!

Hi bnick,

Both detectors are great but can not really be compared as one is PI and the other a VLF. The AT Gold however is way more sensitive to small gold than the Infinium, yet the Infinium is very quiet in hot ground like that is found in Oregon. I could not prospect without either as I use them for the environment they are good at...like bedrock and exposed hardpack sniping is perfect for the AT Gold as it will pick up tiny flecks of gold trapped in that bedrock, etc..

The Infinium will punch down deeper into gravel bars without being bothered by all the hot rocks and find those deep lunkers that could be present.

If you want an "Oregon deal" on an AT Gold I can send you to a Oregon Dealer that will most likely get you the best deal ever, PM me if you want the name. Or stick with Big Boys as they are great also, just thought local might be good idea.

I sure am impressed with my AT Gold so far!

I've used the Garrett Infinium, it's a great PI machine for the beach....BUT, it's a PI machine. You will end up digging ALLOT of targets. I found a 18k gold ring and a chunky .925 silver ring with it, but I dug probably 200 pulltabs, etc before I found the gold. If you don't dig, you might miss the goodies with a PI machine. I own the AT-Pro and I've found 4 silver rings, a silver relic, 5 silver coins and tons of clad so far in one park. No gold rings yet, but they are out there. I love my AT-Pro, wouldn't trade it for anything.

There's a bit of info out there on the Infinium, here's a few links that helped me a ton.

Hope this helps and if you do get the Infinium, get a straight shaft kit, It'll save your shoulder.

Bearkat4160...

Hey really good advice and after an incredible amount of reading this week in a fit of brilliance I realized I need both the AT Gold as well as the Infinium... Problem is I can either purchase one or the other right now but not both, ha... can easily see myself ordering the other by summer... I do want to work the ocean and beaches but even today while doing our morning walk my wife asked me how often we drive down to the beach from Portland rather than up to work the areas around our placer claims... I'm really thinking I'm going to order the AT Gold as it's the latest technology, but the Infinium has the meat to get the job done deep and we have all seen great videos showing the Infinium working fresh water too... I can see a person having to use discipline around school yards with the Infinium so as to not find themselves digging 3' holes under the swings, ha...

I can't seem to find where or how to PM on this Forum as I'm new to it and it doesn't have PM prompts like my other forums have... I do appreciate all your input as you hit it all on the head... Years ago I dug everything with my Compass X80 so I know well about digging 100 pull tabs and then get excited as I uncover a deep roofing nail, ha... We sure have some super hot ground and rocks here and I used to have to GB every 3 steps down on the mouth of Canyon Creek and the John Day River, so yes the AT Gold sure sounds tempting yet I'm also aware of the digging necessary with the Infinium... You have done it the way I want to do it but it may take a few months to buy both machines...

I can call you if you find a free minute or so but I have to figure the PM usage first...
Happy Weekend
bob

If your ground is super hot, I'd get the infinium first and work your claims. It'll punch through the mineralization easy.

Interesting discussions.

but I guess you have to have a certain number of posts to be recognized. That is certainly some nice looking placer gold you pictured. Hmmmm, me and my ATP aren't that far from the John Day.

Forrest MC...

Hi, and yes that John Day\Canyon Creek area, as well as Susanville always got me so excited to hunt there with my Compass... There is so much incredible history in and around all these areas throughout the entire West Coast, Canada, and Alaska... Seems I read long ago "There's a ghost under every rock" for all those who worked these area's before us... It was the John Day area that was the hottest ground I ever detected on and since everyone seemed to shoot their guns where I wanted to work I was forever digging and GB'ing years ago with little gold taken truthfully... Our claims are off the Santiam and it was never a big producer but we've taken several ounces of beautiful smaller 1/8" to 3/8" nuggets... We've used some of them for jewelry and the fine gold we'd melt into small 1/2oz buttons to sell for gas money... I've wanted to get back into detecting for decades now since I sold my Compass X80 and with all of today's new technology either the AT Pro or the AT Gold have really looked good... Mary and I talked today and she told me come on lets order the AT Gold Monday which I agreed to with a big smile... The Fisher Gold Bug Pro as well as Minelabs X-Terra 705 were tempters too as is the Infinium... I do think I'll do the Infinium before summer though as I can very much see it's importance and we all want as much depth as possible without having to write a $10k check for a new Minlab GPX10000 which surely will be released soon as I place my order for my AT Gold, ha...

It's all good whether dredging, highbanking, detecting, or just sitting in the garage doing a clean up on your Camel while sipping cool ones with your friends...

Peace to all...

My brother Pat and me with our 6" and my Dad working the 3" Highbanker... This is the area I want to work the AT-Gold...

Hey Bob,

Yeh I tried to PM you and you do not those privileges yet as I think you need to have a few more post under your belt first. O well, we'll get in contact somehow. I took the AT Gold out fo rits maiden gold hunting voyage yesterday...intersting machine. No gold but I got a bit more familiar with it. It is still a VLF detector and was noisier than my buddies Infinium he was using...but he got no either. Hard to beat pulse induction in hot Oregon dirt.

Heres my Youtube channel you can follow links under videos to where you will see how to contact me: http://www.youtube.com/user/bearkat4160

Let me tell ya outdoors guy...the AT Gold is a deep searching detector...unbelievable that little 5x8" coil gets better depth that my GTI 2500 with it's stock coil both in all metal air test....I can't believe it! I am so impressed with the AT Gold, I've been waiting for a Garrett gold machine like this forever! I like the tones of the machine, I was never a big fan of the 2500 tones, not much variations of the signal in that one.

I have had mine for about a week now and I can't stop playing with it. It has power in reserve...between 7 and 8 power setting there is definatly a difference. My AT Pro is nice but I like the all metal mode and use that mode mostly out in the woods looking for gold and relics. I can't imagine what the AT Gold will do with the big DD coil. John's graph shows what it will do with the big concentric coil.

SO far the AT Gold will pick up my small gold nuggets that my Scorpion will not. I'm talking like .05 minus gram nuggets.

MY 2 CENTS....Alan
Hey..I enjoyed your other vid on youtube where you compared the at pro and the gti in air test. Will you do this for the at gold also in comparison to at pro??
