Are the beach cleaning machines getting all jewelry?

The dry sand on NJ beaches is cleaned every night and they do a real good job. The marks are the same as a comb would make. Do those machines pick up things as small as a ring or pull tabs. These beaches are really clean.

My theory is "yes". I have talked to several of the operators and they all said "no". I think it's because they are city workers and can't divulge the truth.

Necklaces, braclets and rings probably get picked up by the forks in the machines. They go back to the dumping ground and sift through the stuff and pick what they want!!

What a job!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[size=medium]I'm going to have to agree to a certain extent. I've found that in the morning when the beach looks new again you don't find as much.

However when they clean the beach (at least here in the northeast) the cleaner doesn't go that deep. I think they only skim the surface taking the top 2-3" getting what shows on the beach. I've detected below that and have found sparkler wires, coins and even soda cans which the machine should have picked up.

Even walking the beach after the cleaner has gone through I can kick the sand with my feet and find foil, paper and other junk. I don't rely on the cleaner to do that good of a job. I think the only thing that matters is that the beach look more pristine with comb and tire tracks rather that foot prints all over the place. It looks better for the tourists that way.

Happy Hunting!!! :usaf:

Surely some of you cleaning machine operators are detectorists too.

I have watched them use different machines which pick up varying degree of size material from the beach. Have seen times when the bottle caps and taps were cleaned from the beach. Check this out, maybe this will be proof enough. I would love the extra benefits from the job.

into the hands of the crew. A freind I hunt with said he has seen them go over certain areas three times, guess they want to make sure they didn't miss anything. He also told me he heard they fight over the goodies.

I talked to 1 of the operators and even looked in his basket.
He said they very seldom find anything other than wallets and sun glasses.
From what i'v seen that would be the truth

I watched a few of the videos and they said the screens were adjustable. This means to me that they could make the screens very small and pick up small objects if they wanted. I know if I was running a machine I would crank it down!
